Languages you knowWant to learn

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:30 pm

I know, in order of proficiency, high to low:
Dutch (Flemish)
English
French
German

Want to learn:
Norwegian
The first part is the same for me - not Flemish though, just regular Dutch. I'd like to improve my French some more (but I'm leaving for Paris tomorrow, so it should be fine) and would like to learn something completely different like Japanese. Took a Chinese class, but forgot most of it already.

Part of me thinks you shouldnt need to learn Swedish either, its Finland after all. But iirc Finlnd used to be part of Sweden (no offense if I have this wrong) which explains the amount of people who know Swedish. Infact I swear I heared more people spoke Swedish than Finnish. Not sure. S

That is correct, Finland was originally part of Sweden, then imperial Russia after which we gained independence at beginning of the last century. However, swedish is the second official language of Finland, which is why it is taught at schools all across the country.

I want to learn:

Italian , because I am partly Italian of origin.
Finnish, because it's a related language, so I can learn their grammar easily.

Also suprised at so many people saying Japanese, unless you intend to (or already have) visit(ed) Japan I dont see a need. Anime has subs, I assume most manga is translated. So why is it so popular ? Or are lots of people planning on visiting Japan ?

I intend on visiting Japan at some point in my life, and some friends and I have already thought up a rough outline of the trip. Besides that, the culture is a pretty interesting one in general. As for anime and video games, reading subs just isn't the same. Or so I've heard.

こんにちは!

Step 1: Get the http://www.google.com/intl/ja/ime/ so you can write japanese on your non-japanese keyboard like I just did ^
Step 2: Sign up for http://www.textfugu.com/ (check out their http://www.textfugu.com/free-lessons/)
Step 3: Follow their lessons to the letter

do those three steps and in a few months you'll be able to read and write hiragana and katakana and you'll have a pretty good vocabulary to continue learning japanese

ありがとう

I am quite comfortable with English as my only language, considering how many people around the world speak it. I also know a little bit of French, German and Spanish that I picked up through school. However I would in future like to learn some eastern language.

Russian, Arabic or some form of Chinese would be great to learn, considering the job prospects they unlock.

Of all the languages I've learned, I'm fluent in none of them. I'm capable in Spanish and Arabic, both of which I've actually used quite a bit in my life, but under very different circumstances.

Know:

Italian (though I've forgotten most of it since I never use it)

Would like to learn:
Japanese

I'm not someone who desires language knowledge unless I have a use for it.

I know English.
I took three years of Spanish, but would not consider that as knowing the language.

I want to learn either Mandarin or Japanese, but I know I never will take the time to learn them.

Languages:
- Norwegian (which automatically gives us a understanding of swedish and danish aswell).
- English
- I had Spanish for 6 years in school, but I would still consider myself an absolute beginner at it as I never was enthusiastic towards learning it.

Want to learn:
- German
- Turkish
- Arabian
Yes, an understanding of Swedish and Danish to a certain extent. I find the Danish oral language almost equally difficult to understand as the Swedish written language (oral Danish being a tad more difficult). The remaining forms of these two languages are quite easy to understand.

My languages:

Know:
Norwegian
English
(some) German

Want to know:
I really just want to improve my English. I do so by reading English every day and taking notes of unfamiliar words as often as possible. And by posting in these forums.
That being said, I'm actually quite fascinated by the Finnish language, probably because it is so distinct compared to the other Scandinavian languages. It would be cool to learn it sometime, but I really don't have any practical reason to.

I'm quite fond of words like "futtock" and "masticate" because they sound really rather rude, but aren't. At all.

I know English, and a few words of German and Spanish. I'll probably learn French in school next year (Spanish, Latin, and French are the choices), though i'd also like to fully learn German.
