My Little Pony:The Beatles or Queen?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 8:01 am

Never listed to the Kinks, so I couldn't say.

And this is apparently an "[Insert Band Here] Compared to The Beatles" thread now. I blame myself.

How about a slightly different question: If you could choose to be in a room with any Member of either Queen or The Beatles at the height of their fame, who would it be?

Hey, threads evolve, especially with a not-really-debatable question.

Most definitely Paul McCartney at the height of his fame. Favourite Beatle.

One thing I must belter, never seek shelter from the Helter Skelter because it causes your heart to melter!

That song is totally NOT the Beatles, but a decent one nontheless.

I couldn't listen to either repeatedly, but each has their own merits. I'd say that the Beatles were more prolific and influential throughout musical history. But that Queen were more musically talented, especially Freddy Murcury who is without doubt one of the best vocalists of all time.

Both were great, but unfortunately not to my tastes.

Also, Helter Skelter is about a slide.

New question: The Beatles compared to The Beach boys?

Probably The Beatles, but really only for the reason that I never knew anyone who was really into the Beach Boys: I liked the stuff I heard, but can only recall two or three songs offhand.

How about a slightly different question: If you could choose to be in a room with any Member of either Queen or The Beatles at the height of their fame, who would it be?

Roger Taylor (no, not Rohugh) seems like quite a good laugh, so him, I guess.

What do you mean, "also,"?

"Also" as in "And something else" or "As well".

I don't know, what should it mean?

Well I felt that when you were saying Helter Skelter was about a slide, you were originally meaning to put another point in there as well, e.g. "I like bananas. Also, Helter Skelter is about a slide."

I tend to think of every post that I make in a thread as an ongoing stream of thought contained to the specific thread. So every post that I make adds on to a statement I made before, even if they have nothing to do with each other.

Seems like it, unless there's some deeper meaning to the lyrics I can't fathom.

I seem to recall that Have A Cigar alluded to that particular misconception! Well, for "alluded" of course I mean "spelt out directly".

Queen. Not a difficult choice for me. The Beatles had some great music ("While my Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Live and Let Die" are great songs) and were great pop stars, but Freddie Mercury was a legendary artist and performer and along with Brian May and the rest of the band, Queen really knew how to rock a stadium in a live show. Plus, they did the Highlander soundtrack! I unfortunately never got to see them live, but there are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDckgX3oU_w&feature=related.

Argh. "Live & Let Die" is not a Beatle's song. It's a Paul McCartney & Wings song. :D

I knew that. "Paul McCartney and Wings" Close enough. Never was a big John Lennon fan, anyway.

The Lennon-McCartney divide often seems to polarise people; I tend to be of the opinion that they worked much better together than on their respective solo endeavours, though; I feel much the same about Floyd's Waters and Gilmour, too, both of whom seemed comparatively weak as solo songwriters (yeah, waters could do "intense", but without Gilmour's melodies to tame his writing it was a bit too much...)

Don't get me started on Pink Floyd! Another great band. Yes I think Pink Floyd did better stuff when they were together as a band than when they split. It's too bad that Gilmour and Waters can't reconcile because they are both great musicians.

I will stay away from the Lennon-McCartney divide then. I thought some of their fighting seemed petty and a bit childish (writing songs dissing each other), but great artists often are difficult to get along with (especially with another artist).

Freddie Mercury said in an interview that they stayed together for so long (13 years then) because even though they were all strong-minded musicians and were always fighting in a sense, they were basically doing 'solo projects' the whole time they were together as a band and that is what made them more diverse.

Don't forget that the Beatles were first and pioneered a lot of things that modern music takes for granted. So most things about them that you may find "meh" were quite awesome at the time.

I don't think they did really, music had been heading that way for a while and there were quite a few bands with the same style as the Beatles.
