I don't think they did really, music had been heading that way for a while and there were quite a few bands with the same style as the Beatles.
Depends on when you're talking. Early in their career in later.

Neither, can't stand either of them. Beatles where innovative for their time but outside of that time period they are nothing special. Queen is the most over rated band ever, well besides Jimmy Hendrix but he's not a band.

Queen were light years ahead of the Beatles who imo were hugely over rated

Argh. "Live & Let Die" is not a Beatle's song. It's a Paul McCartney & Wings song.
It's also one that was a pretty poor song until Guns N Roses made it good

Queen is my favorite out of those two, but I do like what Paul did after The Beatles, Wings and such.

I seem to recall that Have A Cigar alluded to that particular misconception! Well, for "alluded" of course I mean "spelt out directly".

the name pink floyd was a combination of two blues artists that the band members admired and were influenced by.

however the misconception was some what fueled by the combination of the "wish you were here" album being mostly a dedication to the former lead singer Syd Barett (who had mental disorders) and "The Wall" having a story about a protagonist who had mental disorders (which alot of people assume was modeled after syd barett which is not really the case, besides the head and eyebrow shaving part) whose name was pink would confuse people into thinking that some one in the band went by the name pink floyd.

Wait, so who the hell else was doing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6dy_XZrx-4&hd=1 in 1967?

I'm a little surprised by how little love the Beatles are getting. Yes, Brian May was a better guitarist, and Freddie Mercury was a better vocalist, but there's no question in my mind that the Beatles were much more innovative. They were the zeitgeist in a way that no other band has been. They redefined what pop music could do. No, they didn't do it in a vacuum, but give them some credit.

Not a huge fan of either, but Queen. They have a handful of songs I enjoy, whereas the Beatles have none.

Bands other than the Beatles had unique music too, for example The Velvet Underground started in 1967, and although they weren't popular, their music is incredible and unique. They are also cited by many musical experts to be heavily influential. However, I think influence is a redundant point - lets remember the Beatles as a fantastic band. Not as a fountain of raw influence.

I love them both, but it's Queen for me. Their songs are more upbeat(?) and catchy. Or, at least, it is that way for me.

"Don't stop me now
I'm having such a good time"

Gotta love that.

Both are just awful. I'll go for Queen though. Gotta give props to Freddie's badass mustache.

Not a huge fan of either but I prefer the Beatles I guess if only because I don't think I ever listened to Queen song other than Bohemian Rhapsody

Depends. Which Beatles? Early bluesy Beatles, Beatles Beatles, or Yellow Submarine Beatles?

Either way its still Queen for me. I wasn't really ever a Beatles guy, always preferred the Rolling Stones myself. I'll take nihilism, honky tonk, and loads of energy over whimsical lyrics and boring shows any day. Not to say I don't like the Beatles, they just weren't great performers.

I love old Merseybeat bands. George Martin (Beatles producer) produced http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juzm3BRksf0 for Gerry and the Pacemakers. What's amazing is back then the strings and horns were in the studio with the band - they didn't have the separate tracks to mix like now. Must have been hard to get everyone coordinated.

Overall I'd have to say Queen as well. I will admit that Journey has gotten me thrown into some pretty passionate ballads, though.:P

Yeah, not saying that I don't like them or their music, I just don't think they are even close to comparable.

Queen
Don't Stop me Now and Princes of the Universe are two of my favorite songs

Don't listen to the Beatles much, and what I have listened does not interest me too much.

Well they're both very innovative bands. My point is that Queen doesn't even compare in that department.

And no, I don't think influence makes a good band. But innovation does.
