My problem with what I've played so far (the demo only) is that it's so patronising and cheap. A kid dies, who has no backstory and is obviously a rather transparent (tautology be damned) writer's ploy to ellicit grief or anger from the player dies. Boo-effing-hoo.
From a game series that dealt with racism, class, mortality and population control, that dived fearlessly into the ethics surround each, I find it profoundly disheartening to see the demo is nothing more than a gears of war clone with horribly cheesy dialogue. It seems the new Vegas guy looks like he's been ripped off that "Jersey Shore" some Americans watch and stuck rather ham-handedly into this game. He seems to have the depth of a puddle of gnat's piss, although I can't really judge having not played the full game.
Are my worries justified? Is the game like the demo? A 2.8 average rating on the metacritic of the PC version seem to say "yes".
There I highlighted everything you said that matters.

No, you don't have to worry, the demo is not what the majority of the game is like. Sure the first two hours or so are combat heavy and lack any real RPG elements but it picks up after that. I don't know if the series can get back on par with the first ME but from what I've played the game is very good.Don't take the Metacritic reviews seriously, that site has some real issues.
