Okay you are making progress now, great! Now you need to take a look through the options in the GUI and set it up to your liking. Most of it should be fine at the default settings, but you will probably want to at least change the screen resolution to you liking. The next big thing is setting up the distant land. Click on the distant land button and it will take you through the generation of distant land and statics. The documentation at the official website is pretty good at explaining what the different settings are so take a look over there and post back with any questions here or at the official MGE thread on the forums.

Could you send me a link to the actual official website? I found a few claiming that they are. These guys: http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/support claim that they can't help, however it's probably just me being stupid. I found another site that claims that the gui cannot be opened while Morrowind is running.

Long time lurker, first time poster, registered just for this.

I saw talk of MGE and Morrowind under WINE, and I can happily report that the rating on the AppDB for MGE is a tad off. It is not 'garbage', if I were rating it myself, it'd be 'Bronze' or so. To get it to run properly, you'll need to do a couple of things -- You'll need to install .net 2.0, directx9 and d3d9 using winetricks. After this you'll need to set dinput8.dll and d3d8.dll to 'native,builtin' in the library overrides, and ensure that d3d9.dll and dinput.dll are only set to 'builtin' (the winetricks process may tweak that, and since the native windows libraries will be installed, doing so will ensure that you will use WINE's versions of those libraries even if the windows versions are present.

A couple of things: I run 3.8.0, because I wanted distant land. 3.8.2's GUI for distant land won't display path selections under WINE, making it unusable for this purpose. The 3.8.0 distant land generation has a very high tendancy to crash during world texture generation. If that happens, after it crashes, copy the half-generated world.dds file out of the distantland directory. When you restart the generation wizard, let it delete the half-finished directory, and with the next window open, copy world.dds back into the right place. Then continue the process. It should complete, and you should get your distant land as normal.

To those saying that MGE under WINE will be slow, as on ANY system the more bells and whistles you use, the slower it will get, but I've never had any playability problems with it.

Have you tried downloading the complete DirectX redistributable from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=194352&clcid=0x409 and running that? Also, have you downloaded and installed the latest drivers for your video card? What type of video card are you using, by the way?

Do I have to do this every time it crashes when generating the world texture or is this a one time issue? I think it would be quite bothersome to fix it if this is a prolonging issue.

That's interesting. I'm half-tempted to reinstall Kubuntu to try this out myself.

(Plus I would get to use Amarok again - it doesn't work too well under windows).

Once the world texture is generated, you'll only have to regenerate it if you decide later to use a texture replacer. You can safely skip that step after you've had it fully complete the first time. If you ever delete your distant land folder, yes you would have to go through the entire process again.

This is the first time downloading it. What do I do with it? Do I still need to move extracted files?

I'm not sure if I have the latest drivers for my video card installed. I'm using Radeon Graphics HD 6370M 1 GB. I'm using a laptop.

The DirectX redistributable is just the full DirectX package in one installer. It should be an executable about 96MB in size. You just download it and run it and it should update your DirectX with all the files you'll need.

It certainly couldn't hurt to check for updated drivers for your video card, as well. The latest drivers for your graphics card can be found http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx.

d3dx9_40.dll is still missing from my computer. I downloaded the Catalyst Software Suite upgrade for my graphics card. Again I ask if someone would be so kind to email me this file so I can extract it to my Morrowind folder, unless it doesn't work that way.

Did you install the DirectX redistributable package that I linked to in my previous post? If so, did it install without errors?

The missing d3dx9 file is not one that would be in your Morrowind folder. It should be in your C:\Windows\System32 folder and should be installed with the DirectX redistributable or DirectX web updater.

When I browse with DirectX June 2010 Redist to extract it somewhere I cannot see the Windows folder. It does exist because I am looking at it in my C drive. I believe this folder must be hidden. How do I reveal it so I may be allowed to store the extracted files in the correct folder?

The DirectX redistributable is an executable file, you shouldn't be extracting it. It's an exe file that you double click and it should begin the installation with little to no input from you after it starts. When the installation is finished you should have the correct files installed to your C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folders.

The instalation is instantly finished and it asks me to type the location where I want to place the extracted files. The extracted files are probably the updates I just downloaded. I cannot see the Windows folder where I need to put this installation into. I will try right clicking the windows folder to allow me to see it when I try to finish the procedure.

When I enter C:\Windows\System32 it says that the folder is invalid. I'm trying to allow myself to see it.

OK, sorry I always use the web installer which does everything without intervention. With the redistributable you will need to extract the files somewhere you can find them ... create a folder called 'DirectX' in your Downloads folder, or on your desktop, then extract the files there. After the files are extracted, open that folder and find the DXSETUP.exe file. Double click that and the installation of DirectX will begin.

Installation failed. I now receive the same message as I did when I tried to install the updates directly off the internet: "An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine problem."

I posted my log file earlier (I probably shouldn't do that again) but I suppose it may be subject to change.

Ah, well that's not good. I've been searching your problem with DirectX failing to install online and haven't found a simple answer to correct it. As a matter of fact, a lot of what I am reading suggests using System Restore to go back to a point before you made any changes to DirectX and starting again, or even reinstalling Windows. Neither of which are very desirable options.

One thing you could try is running the Windows System File Checker to see if it finds and can repair any damaged system files. If you want to try this what you need to do is open a Command Prompt window as Administrator (click 'Start' and in the search box type 'command' when the Command Prompt application shows up in the list of programs, right click it and choose 'Run as administrator'). At the command line type in 'sfc /scannow' (without the quotes). SFC will run and check your system files and prompt you if it finds any missing or damaged files.

System Restore is a bad idea because I've never used directX up to this point, but perhaps an older version of directX could be conflicting with the installation. Evidently I already had Directx version 10 with my computer, but I was told in earlier posts that version 9 has things that are required that version 10 doesn't have.
The system scan is complete: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

You shouldn't let the setup program extract all files to the temp directory instead you should choose a folder outside of "C:\", because if you do that makes it easier for you to run the DXSETUP.exe once all files are extracted. Just run http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=3b170b25-abab-4bc3-ae91-50ceb6d8fa8d.

I made a new folder "DirectX" under my downloads folder which is not under my C drive. I installed it from there instead of the websites and I have the same results.

If you run the DirectX diagnostic tool does it report any problems?

To run the diagnostic tool click Start and in the search box type 'dxdiag' (without the quotes) and press Enter.

:shocking: You did. I wonder what's wrong or you're doing... Because by now you should really had MGEgui.exe running and probably begin a new game. Wait... Have you update your sound card with the latest drivers?

:P gui works just fine. I'm just recieving an error when starting up Morrowind that I am missing d3dx9_40.dll from my computer. I believe it is a DirectX issue. I am having a single installation problem as posted before.

This is the first time opening up this tool. Is there anything specific I must do?
