MGE for Windows 7 64 bit and Morrowind Resolution Changer

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:05 am

Update-I am still receiving this error when trying to start Morrowind: "This program will not start because d3dx9_30.dll is missing from your computer."

I am receiving this error when trying to update directX: "DirectX Setup-An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine problem."

Download MGE and its required support files in the first post in this http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1159516-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/. As for the resolution changer, once you get MGE up and running, use that one to change your resolution. By the way, MGE will work in Windows 7 64 bit, my wife and I use it all the time without any problems.

Latest official version (3.8.0b)

Ok, I tried to extract it and now my antivirus identified it as a trojan. Could I get a more reliable site? I will not be using MGE at all if this is the only link.

I like this site: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5535 and yet another trojan quarantined. I'm using ClamAV.

As a trojan? I've never had any problems with MGE. Avira is fine with the app, too.

I've used Jotti Virusscan site, that uses 19 different anit-virus programs to scan MGE 3.8.0b's .exe and it's all clear, so no worries.

NOD (on my previous computer) and AVG Free (on new) didn't find anything bad in any MGE which I have.

Should I tun off my AV for this installation?

I looked up that site and I have different results...

MGE_v3.8.0b.7z
Status:
Scan finished. 1 out of 19 scanners reported malware.
Scan taken on: Tue 8 Feb 2011 21:32:43 (CET) Permalink

And this is the single scanner that found something:

[Frisk F-Prot Antivirus]
2011-02-08 W32/SmallTrojan.R.gen!Eldorado

So I guess everyone with MGE version 3.8.0b.7z has an old trojan? Perhaps there's a more reliable source without it?

You should download the file from the Sourceforge website which is the project's main page. I'd recommend using the latest beta version which can be had http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/files/Beta%20Releases/MGE%203.8%2B%20SVN%20builds/mge3.8.2-rev.0178.7z/download. That way if you decide you want to try out MGE XE you already have the version that XE requires, and even if you don't the latest beta version has some nice features that were not present in the latest stable build.

I'd also like to pose another question regarding the trouble you are having with the file you downloaded - do you have anything installed that is capable of extracting 7zip files? From the sound of your initial post it strikes me that you may need to install something to extract the contents of the file you are downloading. You will need to download and install 7zip, WinRAR, WinACE or something else to extract the file before you can do anything with it. The file you are downloading isn't an executable, it is a compressed archive. I'd recommend WinRAR to extract it personally, which you can find http://www.rarlab.com/. If you'd prefer 7zip you can get that http://www.7-zip.org/, or WinACE can be downloaded http://www.winace.com/.

I had directx version 10, the visual c++ link downloaded successfully, and I now have Net 4.0. I am at the point where I'm in the middle of extracting the program when my AV program quarantines a trojan. I would prefer downloading the 3.8.0b stable version because from what I'm hearing everything works just fine. The ever so popular sourceforge site that everyone is sending me to is the file that My AV and http://virusscan.jotti.org/en has detected malware. I am using 7zip to extract this file.

As previously stated, there are no trojans in MGE. It is perfectly safe and clean. The files on TESNexus, or any place else for that matter, as just mirrors of the files hosted at Sourceforge. Sourceforge, by the way is one of the longest running and most popular sites for hosting open source projects. It has been around for years and years, and is one of the most well respected and most used places for open source projects to develop software.

I wouldn't worry too much about stability or functionality of the latest beta version either if that's your concern. I've been using MGE XE which is based on, and requires, the latest beta of MGE for hours upon hours of gameplay now and it is just as stable, if not more so, than Morrowind has ever been ... and Morrowind, even in straight vanilla form, has never been the most stable game by any stretch of the imagination.

Then why am I picking up one when I try to extract it? I'm more worried about my computer getting [censored] than the game not working. The game can work perfectly and the trojan can still kill my computer. I understand that there's a chance that this is a false alarm, but for what I see there's an old malware on the program. Eldorado is an old virus, which explains why only 1 out of 19 scanners on that one the Jotti site found anything.

All I want to know is why I'm picking this up if the file is clean?

If you got it from sourceforge, ClamAV is reporting a false positive. You should probably let them know about it. AV programs use what's called "heuristics" to guess which files it has never seen before *might* be malicious. All AV programs that use heuristics report false positives, which is why they have contacts to report them. Check out the CLAM homepage and look for the "Report a false positive" link.

Believe me, *nobody* in the Morrowind community wants to break your computer, especially not the MGE team. If they didn't keep their stuff clean, nobody would use it and they're be run out of town on a rail.

In other words, It's clean if you got it from Sourceforge.

Perhaps you should try http://www.pandasecurity.com/ http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan/index/?lang=en-US Online Scanner which is free to use. :user:

Why do you use MGE v3.8.0 when you can use MGE v3.8.2 instead and http://www.fliggerty.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=65209#p65209 is how I install it on Windows7-64bit.

Hold on. I'm not sure if I extracted it successfully, but now I can't play Morrowind.
Morrowind Launcher.exe "The program can't start because d3dx9_30.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
I'm not sure if it's related in any way, but I was playing it fine earlier. Oh well, my headache isn't going away any time soon.

You should extract the file directly to your Morrowind directory. If extracted correctly MGEgui.exe should be in the same folder as your Morrowind.exe and Morrowind Launcher.exe.

Have you downloaded and run the DirectX web installer to update all your DirectX 9 files? Windows 7 does not ship with a complete implementation of Direct X 9 so some files need to be installed for some DirectX 9 applications to function correctly. Download and run the web installer found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en and see if that fixes your problem.

I downloaded the above link and it says there is an internal error DXerror.log so check the folder or something. This is a huge project that I am obviously not ready for. I need to study several areas concerning this before I should even attempt to begin. I wasted my entire day trying to get this mod to run let alone work properly. Now Morrowind won't even run. I quit.

Do you have MGEgui running?

If no you need to do so, because Morrowind won't run if you have MGE installed.

I personally always prefer extracting mods to a temporary location and then moving the files to the appropriate locations within my Morrowind folder after extraction, just so I am sure they are going in the correct place. Probably not necessary in most cases, but I prefer the peace of mind afforded by doing it myself rather than hoping they are extracted to the right spots.

You will need to get MGEgui.exe running before Morrowind will start with the MGE files in place in your Morrowind directory as Leonardo2 mentioned. If all you want to do is get Morrowind running again (without MGE for now) then all you should need to do is remove the MGE files from the Morrowind root directory. Just move MGEgui.exe, d3d8.dll, and dinput8.dll out of your Morrowind directory and Morrowind should start up as normal.

No instead you should extract the MGE archive into Morrowind folder and the MGEgui is placed where is should be.

After that you have installed the necessary required programs you can just right click on MGEgui.exe to send it to desktop as a shortcut before you launch it and if you have MGEgui running you're done with the installation of MGE.
Now can you run and if you have any problem after that just post a description of your problem here so that we can help you out. Good luck. :)
