Might and Magic Thread. From M&M-HOMM.

One thing canne understand is how this game has so few fans in this community, it was very open world and the dungeons were fun to explore. Not to mention the quests did allow for a lot of fun.

So... what ever did happen to M&M and HoMM? I want another installment.
Might & Magic died when the devs went bankrupt, and Heroes of Might & Magic was revived and subsequently ruined by Ubisoft.

I loved Might & Magic 7 and 8 (7 was the 1st I played, thus my fave). Liked trying low-level speed runs. #6 was good too, but since I played 7 & 8 first, by then I was kinda "been there done that" so it'd be 3rd on my personal ranking, for that reason only. I can understand why some think it's the best in the series even if I don't share it.

Tried one of the Heroes of M&M once....not my kind of strategy game.

I wish someone would revive it, hell even Bethesda, though would worry about them mucking up the lore.

That's a bit of a shame. I actually prefer the franchise to TES. :spotted owl: Yes, to this day... I've lost all of my copies. :cryvaultboy:

No, thanks. If it's going to be revived... I'd only (maybe) trust Piranha Bytes or CDProjekt do it right.

You mean company who did Risen or don't know who the other one is.

I've forgotten all about M&M until that other thread popped up. I remember when I was kid I would play M&M 6,7,8, and even 9(didn't like that one at all). I was to young to understand the story. I'll have to replay them once I get my old PC plugged in my room.

Yes, the devs who made Gothic 1 and 2  and the devs who made The Witcher 1 and 2.

(If Piranha Bytes don't redeem themselves with Risen 2, they're dead to me. Dead to me! Unfortunately.)

Maybe partly because...they were very action/combat oriented games. Then later the graphics/engine never updating as time went on didn't help. Yes they had a plot and quests but I don't remember ever feeling like they had story or character development, that made me feel much of anything/get involved much, if that makes sense.

Thought I heard second companies name, what I loved about these game, was the magic it felt powerful, whether walking on water or teleporting everywhere. Beth should look back at these games magic to see how magic is supposed to be.

Mandate of Heaven seemed to have most reaching story, but I think large point was, that the main plot wasn't meant to be focus, you were meant to improve things or help others, or kick out religious zealots, like Temple of Baa.

I have no problem with them being more action-oriented rpg's, btw. I was just postulating that these forums tend to lean more towards story/character focused rpg's. I knew one person who didn't think the M&M series was all that much more engrossing than Diablo.

I thought that view a little extreme, personally, but you were wondering why there weren't more M&M fans here, and that was my idle theory.

These seemed more realistic, and you really had to manage your resources well. You didn't have coins, potions and magic items dropping left, right and centre. I appreciat(ed) the pseudo-medieval, (relatively) low-magic setting more than what the TESes, WoWs, DAs and KoAs have offered.

Mandate of Heaven was my favourite.

Although, it's been so long that I've played them I may just be mis-remembering how good they were. :D

They were truly open world and the main questline wasn't breathing down ya neck, people could argue no real direction, but it's not about doing some amazing mission, it's about being a hero, thus you're not some chosen one or anything, I liked that.

I feel magic was more advanced in MoH than in Skyrim, you have more schools of spells for instance and I agree much more realistic regarding your item usage, also how it was essential for all of ya team to have missile and melee weapon really felt more realistic too.

Yeah, I think this is what I most fondly remember. The game expected you to be proactive instead of reactive. I'm getting all fuzzy just thinking about it. :)

lol, I worry about that these days myself. I played #7 for months, with reams of notes taken, way back then. I still replay them once in a blue moon, but rarely get more than half-way through because of over-familiarity. :)

I actually want to find my copy of Mandate of Heaven again, you never really died either, but the Grim Reaper was one who told ya ya were not meant to die yet, badass!

Not to mention the dragon in MoH was actually really difficult to kill, like much harder than Skyrim's dragons.

Has anyone tried running these games in Vista/7 in compatibility mode? I'm thinking about tracking them down again, but my PC is quite the cutting edge(-ish) rig.

I've played Mandate of Heaven on my Windows 7 machine a while back. I can't remember if I had to patch/tweak it first though.

Games in general were a lot harder back then. I miss those days.
And I agree that the whole "chosen one" plot is very, very tired these days.

That's why I have a 2nd, non-cutting edge PC with XP on it. ;)
Good Old Games has them for cheap, supposedly fixed to run on Win7, like all their old games. But I haven't tried to see how well they work.

Nah not tried it, it be awesome if we all replayed it, while perhaps on skype together, going through game together. I just think it be great if we could play this together .

Mandate of Heaven didn't breath down ya neck, and it was more ya had many problems with cities to solve, like for instance when Prince Nicholai ran away to join circus and ya had to go find him! But if ya went too early ghosts and [censored] killed ya! Remember?

As long as I can get it running, I don't care how much I have to tweak/patch. Okay... ! *writes down reminder...* Buy Mandate of Heaven. *stickies it to screen*

That's why I have a 2nd, non-cutting edge PC with XP on it.

I've been meaning to find one for about two years. I keep forgetting.

Loved Heroes Chronicles, and Heroes 3 & 4. Heroes 5 was alright but six seems like some kid of abomination. I'm still working on a campaign for heroes 4 come to think of it.

You need to buy all six on GOG, although guess that isn't awful, kinda annoying though.

Hm. I'll think about it.

I remember hearing about HoMM 6 coming out but I guess it just didn't make an impression on me at the time. What did people not like about it?
