HoMM 6 sounds good. Hm... On the one hand, Ubisoft; on the other, HoMM. Ubisoft. HoMM.

We play HoMM3 during LAN parties playing humans vs AI. Ends up being pretty fun if everyone gets into it. Some people can't handle the slower pace though so it isn't always a first choice game for us.

I started with a special release of MM6 that included 1-5. I played 6-9, but only tinkered with 1-5. I came to these from DOS D&D, so I should have gotten into 1-5 a bit more, but I started with MM6, so I was hooked on the (relative) freedom the game gave me and didn't want to go back to being locked to a grid. I kinda lost interest when I upgraded to XP because I couldn't get all the games to work. About that time I got a free copy of Morrowind with a video card, so my new gaming needs were addressed.

A couple weeks ago I dusted off an old machine and set it up to play Arena without DOSBox, so I might just have to load MM1-5 on there, as well.
Win98SE
P II 400MHz
192MB RAM
Matrox G200, 8MB RAM
16GB HDD

I only tried one Heroes game, and didn't like it. I'm more into RPG than strategy.

I believe they actually made the game without DRM. Or in the very least, it's playable offline.

The funny thing is the faces in some old games look better than the ones in oblivion.

You can apply this to many older games, Daggerfall comes to mind first.

Never played this series, but hearing the praises has got me curious. Will I have to use DOSbox to run it?

I believe they actually made the game without DRM. Or in the very least, it's playable offline.

I quote:

If you play this game offline instead of authenticating with Ubisoft’s server online every time you play (default choice), you will not have access to parts of the single player game. Sure, you can play the game as per normal, but you will not get to access the game’s Dynasty system, which will allow you to equip certain artifacts and use certain perks. The edge given by these extras are not game breaking, but it surely seems draconian of Ubisoft to impose this just to ensure that gamers adhere to their DRM, even if you’re playing only the single player campaign.
Even worse is the fact that your save games are pegged to their Ubisoft cloud service. If you started the campaign in “online mode”, you lose the ability to load your previous saved games from the cloud unless you’re connected to their Ubisoft servers. Play in”offline mode” and the saves are stored locally, but you lose content as you don’t get to access the Dynasty system.

I read a few reviews, saw a few screenshots. The general consensus is that it's a good game but for the bugs and DRM; and the bugs have been resolved. The game looks so pretty ... I think I'll just buy it used. They're not getting a sale out of me.

I don't know why future games couldn't just stick with the 2D/3D graphics. Once the series went 3D, the game looked horrendous and lost that fantasy feel it always had.

That reminds me of Jagged Alliance 2 VS the new Back In Action game.

The old 2D portraits look better IMO.

I think that good looking 2D games with a nice art style like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and Chrono Trigger age much better graphically than old 3D games.

I should play HoMM 3 again with the Wake of Gods mod. It has been a while.

It sounds to me more like a glass-half-full/half-empty thing to me than any crime against humanity that DRM is typically accused of being.

The DRM doesn't appear to be too onerous. I'm against it on principle. I'll buy another game from them when they, at the most, require a once-off online activation.

Definitely. I prefer the graphics/style of HoMM2 though, even though I think HoMM3 is a better game.

The oringinal RPG M&M were written for Win 95/98/98SE. Some of the old CDs will work with XP. The whole series is availible on GOG for XP-W7. They also have the Heroes series on the Strategy tab.

Already posted this long ago but I will post it again. I can't stand Heroes of Might and Magic V nor VI.

Omg, I'm shocked. Might & Magic Heroes 6 is worse than expected. Many parts of the UI look like a browsergame. You can't take a closer look to your units and your cities. The UI is so different and too complicate in comparison to Heroes 5. Many icons are too small. Many bugs. My mom can't play the game on her pc.

And what the fu** happened to the heroes? Very unmotivating hero skilling system. The ingame currency is unfair for a game you paid for.

The only improvements are visual: Nice unit portraits. But not all visual changes are improvements, the objects on the map are inconspicuous.

There is much more... I'm off playing Dark Messiah (great game, but no strategy).
HoMM 5 and 3 are the best HoMM games.

And one question to you Ellert, are you interested in the lore of Might&Magic. (Ubisoft universum/ 3DO universum)

Sorry about the late answer, had a busy time off the forums for a while and missed this bump in the thread. But the answer is yes. I am interested in the lore especially after playing some of the campaigns in Heroes of Might and Magic 4 which I found could have some decent writing and obviously the whole setting sets the lore up to be capable of a great many thing much like the setting of the Forgotten Realms which has spawned some of my favorite books and stories. So as it stands I am in the dark on Might and Magic lore but I intend to learn more about it.

To have HOMM 3 & 4 as favourite HOMM games is actually a pretty interesting combination.
What do you like about HOMM 4?
