Might and Magic Thread. From M&M-HOMM.

You need to buy all six on GOG, although guess that isn't awful, kinda annoying though.
6 for $10....that's not exactly a bad deal. Looks like the same pack I bought in CD form years ago, altho I think mine came with #7 on it too.

Strange coincidence, since I installed #7 just the other day. I haven't tried #6 in forever, maybe I'll install that too.

Mandate of Heaven was the sixth, then it was For Blood and Honour which has an awesome pub game, if I remember rightly.
HoMM - think Oof is referring to the strategy series.

Hm. I'll think about it.

I remember hearing about HoMM 6 coming out but I guess it just didn't make an impression on me at the time. What did people not like about it?

Your post ended up above mine, wtf :s!

And yeh just saw it, though HoMM 6 did have good ideas, it wasn't a step in the right direction, my favourite was three and four.

lol, how bizarre. It was above mine when I edited my post.

Ubisoft DRM.
That and a lot of bugs/crashes upon 1st release. Many of those may have been fixed by now. The DRM may have been removed or is going to be removed, but I'm not sure on that.

Edit: looks like the online requirement is removed, but if you play that way, you lose some of the game features or something.

So how do you and Oof feel about going through game again, while chatting on skype, talking mainly about Mandate of Heaven.

I don't have/use skype or any other instant chat feature. Used to IRC in the ancient days but forums are about as chatty as I get on the current internet. :)

I've played II, III, a bit of IV, and V. II was incredible, III was even better. I never liked the directions in story and gameplay that IV too (I don't get how they could manage to screw up when they had created such a winning formula in III). Personally, I found vanilla Heroes V a bit lacking, but once Tribes of the East came around, it had been improved and expanded greatly. I wasn't to thrilled about the somewhat reduced scale in V, but I loved the nostalgic feel in its art style and play style.

I don't know why future games couldn't just stick with the 2D/3D graphics. Once the series went 3D, the game looked horrendous and lost that fantasy feel it always had.
I liked Heroes V's art style, it was very reminiscent of Heroes II.

Already posted this long ago but I will post it again. I can't stand Heroes of Might and Magic V nor VI. No self respecting strategy game has so much content that revolves around RNG and no self respecting strategy game has maps that are designed like a series of straight narrows with only a few branches that are dead ends.

RNG does not belong in strategy game and V at least (I will admit to not having played VI but I checked it out online and read about it and it doesn't seem so different) should not be marked as a strategy game any more than the board game Ludo which it seems to aspire to mimic.

I'll stick to my HoM&M III and IV thank you very much, and quite possibly I might find time to try I and II some day.

You tried the Might and Magic game among Heroes? I've tried both, but curious if ya experienced both bits of this franchise.

If the question is directed at me then I have to answer "no", unfortunately. I tried Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor as a kid when I was too young to even read English properly, but it did not end well since I was just not prepared for that kind of a game, I just barely managed to progress enough to get off the starting area (if member serves it was an island) if I remember right.

I am however interested in trying again when I find the time for it, I just tend to be so horribly busy these days that I don't find myself with long periods of time that I can use to focus on interesting games.

I recommend you go for Mandate of Heaven, it's by far the best one.

I still have a collection pack with M&M 6-9. I played them all. But I don't think I ever finished one. I don't remember, maybe my mom helped me. The problem is the games were in english, so I it was difficult to do quests.
They weren't my favourite rpgs. I heard some people say that every game after Might&Magic 5 were bad.

IMO Might and Magic 6 & 7 are about equal. It was funny. I bought might and magic 6 as a little kid and my brother bought might and magic 7. Might and Magic 6 was bigger and had a better story imo and Might and Magic 7 was more involved and had great choices and impact from those choices. Loved the fact that if I was evil and entered the angel city I got swamped as hell. Kicking titans asses close up with shrap metal was badass too. That was probably the most damaging spell in the game if you were positioned right. Taking out hordes of mages/goblins/whatever by flying by and dropping meteor showers and star bursts was friggin great.

I haven't played the HoMMs beyond 3, but I understand that the strategy is to be found in the movement limit and the resource management. I don't see why "corridors" would interfere with either of these aspects. IIRC, HoMM 3 also had very narrowly defined paths.

As far as people that have played 3 but not 6.

6 is the closest heroes game to the winning three formula....its just not quite there....something is still missing, but I cant tell what.

Some of the obvious things I can notice missing....
- Doesnt have many maps
- Missing vital factions (Warlock and Dungeon)
- The tier 7 creatures that have been in the series for a long time have gone (no dragons, titans, devils etc)
- Town screen svcks
- Less resources

I think its a great game, and 6 has streamlined and (i feel) improved the gameplay so that late stages aren't as tedious. Once some DLC has come for it, then I hope it ends up being the game it should have been.

Are all of the creatures, other than those that've been removed, still the same? If I'm going to be playing a game that's made a decade (plus?) later, I need more of a reason than candy graphics. Improved gameplay mechanics are nice, but... I want something more than just that. I played the HoMMs for the world more than the strategy. And I'd want there to be something new and different about that world.

No, all the factions have been completely overhauled, many new creatures and every creature now has multiple abilities.

The battle screen is much more tactical now, you can just outright attack, or you can be more crafty using creature's abilities to change things.

For example, the Haven faction has a 'priestess' type unit, she has an ability to resurrect some dead.....she is pretty useful in a battle for attack or defence, but vital if you want your stacks to live longer. Creatures are more then just meat chess pieces now.

The campaign is rather interesting, lots of story stuff there if you are interested in the world....though it's all about unisoft's re-vamp world (if you didnt know, when ubisoft created 5 they chucked out the previous lore from the series and started again).

I thought they started that with 4 because the last world got destroyed or something?

4 is all about how everyone used portals to escape the destroyed world and started founding a new one....it is still set in the same universe, with many plotpoints that relate back to 3.

5 was completely new, it used many of the same ideas.....but there is now contingency between it nad the older games. 6 is set in the same universe, but hundreds of years before 5.
