No, TES werewolves have forced transformations too.
They could transform at will in Daggerfall though, right? I think MO forced it every night.

I assume that this is only while transformed? (Assuming you aren't otherwise known to them.)

I hope they have it were you don't start off with being forced to transformation, but overtime the disease forces you to change. And eventually you should be able to control it were you are only forced to transform on a full moon.

Yes, they could transform at will. But they also had forced trasformations in Daggerfall too. Both lunar and willing transformations.

I'm still completely perplexed as to why people think that just because you're not forced into a transformation, you're not a Werewolf anymore.
It's a conceptual thing. In many peoples' minds, a werewolf is a person/monster who is cursed to change and kill. If you just go by the technical definition (werewolf - manwolf), then you can call any wolf furry a werewolf, and remove any sense of danger, ferocity, or monstrosity from it -- but that really cheapens and dilutes what the concept of what a "werewolf" is.

While there are some myths and stories of werewolves that don't feature forced transformations, there are some that do and it is something that's worked its way into (American) culture over at least the last 80 or 90 years (Werewolf of London, a movie that came out in the 20s or 30s, featured it, and it seems to be a recurring theme in a lot of media since then).

I agree. Bethesda said there will be a 1.1 patch and game fix on 11/11/11 for the game. I am sure there will some things fixed. Fingers crossed for forced transformations. If not, then it's alright. Not a game-breaker for me.

Ditto...Ditto my friend...

Ring of Hircine allows control of the change? That was what the footage was showing, Hircine's specific quest?

Who's to say that it's not just the ring that allows you to control it at will, and it's forced under a full moon?

Anyways, I'm seriously not looking forward to fighting them. I'm playing a squishy mage which is going to have 200 health, max.

So if I run into a werewolf NPC that's not happy with me? QQ.

Because the only way to become a werewolf is to transform at will....Hircine's ring now serves as an additional transformation.

I really think that whoever claimed that there are forced transformations just went straight to hircines shrine so they can be one as quick as possible. I doubt they actually caught the disease and waited three days. If this is true then how would they know if they didnt try cat hing the disease?

Still not sure what it means by "additional" transformation. Maybe a werebear transformation? :hubbahubba:

The ability to transform again. In Daggerfall, you could only transform at will once a day, and it's reasonable to assume the ability will be like that for Skyrim too. Hircine's Ring would allow you to transform again even after you've used the daily ability.

I'm still curious if there is a limit to how long we can remain in the werewolf form. I'd like to think there isn't or if there is it is quite lengthy because if we can only remain a werewolf for short periods of time it'll severely cripple my enjoyment of running through the woods picking fights with the bears! :toughninja:

Well, this is a fantasy world of it's own, it doesn't have to follow to generic werewolf "rules".

2 have some good mechanics allowing for great fun
3 use my preferred perspective :hubbahubba:

couldn't agree with you more about it being optional, we all have different tastes.

Since forever in TES (excepting for Arena, anyway; that didn't have werewolves at all, IIRC). They prefer nighttime (as they have to change on fullmoons, and it's easier to hunt), but they can be there in daytime, too.

I quite like the look. It's a good mix between Daggerfall's and Bloodmoon's designs. It also has a tail, which is all-too-often left out in other games (it looks weird to me to have a wolf-beast without a tail; makes it look more like a funny gorilla or yeti).

That is something I don't like, yeah. But it's still awesome they're in at all, IMO.

I'm confused, are werewolves confirmed to be in Skyrim or is this pure speculation?

They're in, and they're playable. Can't link to anything though, because it's from leaked material.

your health is constantly drained in werewolf form, and once it hits 0 you shapeshift back. Eating the bodies of people heals you, thus extending the time. I think someone has said 2-3 minutes if you just don't eat anyone

Actually, lycanthropy dates back even further than that. Werewolves are present in Greek, Roman and Norse mythologies as well as in Medieval Christian legends. In ancient Greece, Arcadians were often thought of as werewolves, and there was the myth of the Arcadian King Lycaon, who was turned into a wolf after angering Zeus.

Also, I still think it's a little too early to jump to any conclusions that there are no forced transformations for werewolves in Skyrim. Remember the early conclusions that there were no beast race tails because the tails weren't quite visible in any of the early screenshots and videos of Argonians and Khajiit?
I should have specified Western European culture, which is what U.S. cultural largely spawns from.
