When used properly, I find lo-fi to be especially moving regardless of genre. Like the artist's playing straight to your soul, not to a recording.

Congrats. This has been making me sad since first hearing (and watching) it about twelve years ago (if I'm right and it was released in 2000) and now it hasn't missed its impact once again. I recall they used a lot of grey and other sombre colours in that movie and that made it even more depressing.

It's a fine statement. He's very talented.

Agreed. It's a timeless movie and sountrack.

This band man, this [censored] band.

There's more but I've been pretty obsessed with this band lately.

Ghosts on the Dance Floor - Blink 182
Natives - Blink 182

I find most orchestral music quite moving, not just the music itself but the talent of everyone involved to bring it all together into something so amazing. The soundtrack CD that came with my copy of skyward sword is amazing.

I used to like that song too, but then I listened really close and discovered that they jarated on a civilian. Never listened to that song again.

Louse posted a link to a Joanna Newsom song in the OP...

Her song "Peach Plum Pear" actually brought me to tears at a very low point in life a while back...so yeah.
Maybe the line "You've changed so"...it was deeply troubling to me at the time. I personalized it.

Then months later....four of us drove 125 miles or 200 kilometers to see her live...
All criticism concerning her voice aside, I think she's tremendously talented...especially with songwriting and lyrics.

One song can't do justice to anyone, but if I had to pick a song that describes a large chunk of my life, "Peach Plum Pear" would be a good fit. That might sound more tragic than it should.

She's quite a talented lyricist.

Something very raw and unpretentious about her...especially her earlier works.

These days music doesn't make me cry (or even very sad) unless I have an emotional association that goes with it (like a sad movie). I guess I haven't built up very many sad musical moments to my life these days. I tend to listen to stuff I find uplifting or "goosebump/shivers in a good way" instead - usually non-vocal stuff.

I'm afraid Gary Jules' version is one of my pet hates: I really liked the original, though I admit probably because I grew up with that one being in the charts.
Jules isn't a pet hate for me (his version is ... tolerable ....) but I totally agree on the latter part. I must have played Tears For Fears The Hurting album 500 times during my "anguished teen" years.

Nowadays I'm a real svcker for all those "best of the '80s" compilations. Wow, nostalgia!

Tear up? Well we'll go with that feeling at least, if not the act.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmSjrr0XQNw, less for the intrinsic song itself and more for the memories it invokes of that horrible, horrible, soul rending experience that was Clannad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtx3vQI1Rk4&feature=related, from Shawshank Redemption.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03qBqP2I4p8, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKAeG8fy1fg, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V-WGwJJj58 from Cowboy Bebop. All are quite powerful pieces I think.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go, by Johnny Cash.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp3sxC7oVhk, from the Halo 2 soundtrack. One of my favorite "put on repeat forever" melancholy songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSH8b33wZcw, from The Lord of the Rings musical. Don't knock it, it's good music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_73Cc2typk, by Stan Rogers; and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiBnrGHeBOY, by Loudon Wainwright. Both are better when you pay attention to the lyrics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jP4Osvgvos, from the Ice Age soundtrack. Another "put on repeat forever" song I like.

http://soundcloud.com/piercingsight/solitary-sonata-tiara#play and http://soundcloud.com/piercingsight/stairway-to-madness-diane, by Steven Mortensen. Hell most of his http://soundcloud.com/piercingsight/dont-look-discord.

Edit: Oh and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgxLsb-Lztc, by Hevein.

Edit2: One more thing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Vg2YS-sFE, by The National.
