You mean "Hurt", the Nine Inch Nails song, as covered by Johnny Cash...

Cash's version is about 10,000x better and more emotional though.

Not the point. Why does no one know that this is a Nine Inch Nails song? It's a Nine Inch Nails song!

So? Maybe he did know, he just prefers the better Cash version. Just because it's a cover, doesn't mean you have to credit the original artist constantly.

Eh... I feel that covers should always credit the originator. Am I too uptight about this? Possibly. :P

I just think Cash's voice lends itself much better to the lyrics. NIN's version just doesn't resonate with me at all for some reason.

There are some changes in the instuments that I didn't really like in cash's version.. NIN's was creepier I think

The video for Cash's definitely makes it a lot more powerful though.. and yes his voice is great.

Perhaps the OP was using "by Johnny Cash" to let people know which version he/she was referring to. So you'd know what you were getting when you click the link.
Altho using "Hurt, Johnny Cash version" or a date would have been more clear.

I don't think covers should always credit the original in casual forum posts, but it does make me sad/nostalgic when a song I loved 20-30 years ago is redone and so many of the "kids" have never even heard the original song. lol Ah well, that's generation stuff for ya. :)

Pulled from an interview done by the Alternative Press. Trent Reznor talking about watching the music video for Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt".
Spoiler
I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure.

I like both equally.

Which is why I think when we talk about this stuff casually we should mention the originals. Just so, you know, the spark isn't forgotten for the flame. Yeah, kids... Get off my lawn!

(I'm now old enough to be talking about "children". :sadvaultboy: )

I remember Imogen Heap saying that once her music is "out there", it's no longer hers. Still, I like to give credit where credit is due.

Oh, that's another one:

I've never watched the OC, so that went totally over my head. Still kind of funny, though.

You reminded me of the episode where they spoofed "deep" teenage songstresses. It was Kirsten Dunst parodying Alanis Morissette/Vanessa Carlton/Alicia Keys. Her fictional album was titled Be Not The One Who Is Not That No Love.

Eh, like I said in my earlier post, Jeff Buckley sings it better. Cohen still sings it great but Buckley puts the real emotion into http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8AWFf7EAc4.

I may not agree with the second (not in the least) the fact that you posted Leonard Cohen makes up for that. I love Leonard Cohen Songs of Love and Hate is my preferred album, [censored] musical genius man.

I highly recommend anybody with even a remote interest in folk music to listen to this timeless album.

I'll post a few more

Tim Buckley (no, not the bad webcomics guy) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMTEtDBHGY4 Genre: Folk
Planning for Burial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcdmYpF55l0 Genre: Sludge, shoegaze or something, don't know, check it out
Deerhunter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32dLVXMzgTg Genre: Listed as shoegaze

I can't complain though, there were numerous examples from my youth that I'm still only just finding out about, e.g. I only just found out the other day that Blondie's "Denis" is actually a cover of Randy & The Rainbows' "Denise" from the early '60s.

Warren Zevon's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTIfLTbKhhM. I can't hear it without bawling my eyes out. It's just such a tragic, powerful song with so many emotions behind it(for those who don't know: Zevon recorded this, and the rest of his final album The Wind, in his final months as he was struggling to complete it before he died of lung cancer).
