One of the most romantic melodies I have ever heard is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCvB0wz3grM Wonderful to slow dance to because it's in 3/4 time...and wonderful for a romantic meal...been there done that.
I understand that one. Every time I hear it I'm reminded of an awful time in my early teens when my 'brother' (my best friend but we were like family) went missing and it was assumed he was dead. I listened to that song all the time.
There's a piece of music from the Romeo and Juliet movie that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je3KyWWW8pA
Clint Mansell's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22ut_pzoWgY&feature=related. (The string quartet in it are the talented-in-their-own-right Kronos Quartet.) Utterly tragic.
A number of Nine Inch Nails songs. Some of Alanis Morissette's earlier songs.

I can't link because I'm on my phone, but I would have to say "27" by M.I.A. It's about a friend who had a rough lifestyle and died at 27. She wasn't going to release it but then Amy Winehouse died at 27, so she decided to release it as a tribute to her and all the other musicians who died at that age. I actually can't listen to the words without tearing up
