New Baldur's Gate being teased.

Hm?

Are you asking what it is and/or what type of game it is?

Well, what's it famous for? Good combat or story? World? I hardly know anything about it if i'm honest.

It's set in Faerun, from the Forgotten Realms D&D campaign setting, so the world is fairly well known. BG is known for both its story and combat, but if you don't like stat-based tactical party combat, you probably wouldn't enjoy it. It is very different from an Elder Scrolls game.

Dragon Age is the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, so it's similar to that.

I resent that.

DA:O bashing aside:
Infinity Engine was a very crappy game engine, they should simply reforge a better one. Perhaps make it isometic 3D, or retexture it to similar to and should be better than like PS:T.

I have, and there are similarities. It's the same Bioware formula of team based combat, companion interaction, quests with choices etc. Obviously the combat system is different, the setting is different, and the graphics are different, but there are some similarities.

I've been following the alt-text, and while an HD remake of Baldur's Gate is good news, I can't help but wonder what the current hidden message means.
Chapter One.
There will be more chapters.
More chapters than you think.
Now isn't that a peculiar thing to say?

More Infinity Engine games going HD perhaps?

Ah, such glorious memories of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2. I played the crap right out of them. For years. My first experience modding was with BG.

I've still got both games and all the addons, so the only way they're hooking me into buying them again is if there are a TON of new quests or they convert it to 3D.

I think it refers to the additional content that is being developed for the games.

This announcement is gonna make me give Baldur's Gate another try. I bought the collection (both games + expansions for $10!) but could never actually get into it. I was quite a bit younger and didn't have the attention span to do anything turn based or have to think out stats. I got out of the first dungeon and instantly had no idea what to do, where to go, or who to ask about what to do. It was very offputting, but I think I'm going to give it another go.

I will definitely be buying this, even though I already bought the BG saga twice before. I want this project to be a success, to remind the big developers that there is still a market for deep RPGs which place substance over style.

I hope they make BG1 and TotSC a combined game, I'm sick of changing discs and tampering with saves.

I bought the original BG series 2 years after they came out, then I bought the collector's memorial edition in 2008. I'm going to buy this too. I would pay multiple times for incredible titles like this. They well deserve the awesome job well done.

I was thinking it would be great if they did with Baldur's Gate what Bioware did with Mass Effect.

Whoa whoa hear me out for a second! :ermm:

With the BG series you get to import your main character from the first to the second game, letting you hold on to your character's level and chosen skills. But your companions from the first game don't get their stats carried over and none of the quest choices you make have any effect on the second game. Most of this makes sense because the second game takes place at a different location, but there are several occassions where you run into characters from BG1 that you could've killed in a quest. These can be potential companions but also other minor characters.

From what I remember Bioware's solution for recurring characters was to add a dialogue option that basically says 'Hello friendly looking guy!' 'Hey, didn't I kill you before?' 'Oh yeah that's right! I got better. Now I'm going to kill you' which would trigger a fight.

I'd rather see that NPCs killed in BG1 stay dead. I don't think there's a single person in the first game besides Imoen who plays an essential role in the second game. There's Minsc and Jaheira who you meet right away, but you can just leave them in the starting area. I also think companions should also keep the skills/experience from the first game, except maybe Imoen who learned some magic.

It shouldn't be that much work either. Unlike with more recent Bioware games, none of the BG companions except Imoen in BG2 are essential at any point. You can kill them, leave them behind, or never pick them up.

I like those ideas. Though those 'didnt I kill you before?' things could be explained by ressurections, raise dead-spells.

http://www.baldursgate.com/news/2012/03/21/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-for-ipad-3/

It shows a few shots of the game on iPad, doesn't look very different from what BG1 looks like with the mod that ports it to the BG2 engine (BGTutu). I think the character models are a bit better, but that's the only difference I can make out at this point.

- will include the entire Baldur’s Gate adventure, the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack, and never before seen content including a new adventure and new party member.

It wasn't for everyone.

I loved the games but a couple of my friends who were more into actioners really hated BG. Why? Because of turn-based combat and reliance on numbers (instead of player skill) in battle.

The BGTutu "mod" already fixed this.I'm excited just for the simple reason that there seems to be interest in this title still. Wouldn't mind seeing a straight remake for higher resolutions and better multiplayer support for modern systems.

I didn't use tutu because I wanted an unmodded game experience. Sure it would have made the game better but still...

It wasn't really turn-based though. I mean yeah technically there were "turns", but the actual gameplay was RTWP.

EDIT: Also, probably going to get this new edition. Been a while since I played BG and some new content is an excellent incentive to pick the game up again.
