New Baldur's Gate being teased.

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 10:10 am

http://kotaku.com/5889146/baldurs-gate-website-lurches-to-life-is-a-new-game-rising via Kotaku (via Gamebanshee)

It could be a new Baldurs Gate entirely, or maybe just a re-release for iOS or something, but at this point who knows. Whatever it is, it's coming from Beamdog, a developer headed by Trent Oster, former designer on Baldur's Gate.

At first, I thought maybe it could just be a tease for a new game just using a version of the infinity engine or something, but this is a quote hidden in the sourcecode for the website:

"Pore over the tapestries and works of art hanging from our walls if you wish, Child of Bhaal... perhaps you will find a clue. But patience, ah... patience would reveal it all."

So what do you guys think? Excited about the possibilities? Personally at this point I'm very skeptical, so I'm not holding my breath, but I guess we'll see what happens.

Edit: I am aware my grammar svcks.

Who has the Baldur's Gate rights currently? If Interplay are involved, probably best to not get your hopes up.

I was under the impression that interplay still owned the rights to the series, and honestly, in the financial state they're in, it would be foolish of them NOT to make some more money off of the BG franchise, from a business point of view anyway.

I've done some googling, and I can't exactly find out who really does own it, I'm just assuming it's Interplay. Anyone confirm or deny this?

Never played the originals but hope to get around to it someday. I would certainly be interested in re-releases or a new sequel.

Atari owns the rights I believe.

http://www.videogamer.com/pc/baldurs_gate_2_throne_of_bhaal/news/bioware_on_not_making_baldur_s_gate_3_we_ve_no_regrets.html
In August 2008, Interplay and Atari settled a long-standing dispute, giving Atari all of Interplay's previous D&D game rights, including the Baldur's Gate license.

EDIT: Hasbro owns the rights to AD&D, or at least so I've heard. So Hasbro might actually have the rights to BG and not atari.

EDIT: I think I'm reading too far into things. It's about time I play through the series again. It's been quite a few years. I completely forgot about the whole Darkspawn Bhaalspawn thing.

\Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine
For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory.
And then... it returned. Better than it was before.

An engine update perhaps? If it's a remake I hope it's more than just a port to iOS, but less than a complete revamp. I'd be fine with just a graphical update and porting it to different platforms. I personally wouldn't want to see the mechanics completely overhauled (except perhaps the AI, as, if memory serves correctly, things like pathfinding were fairly aweful).

With the recent news that a Baldur's Gate II Complete Edition is on its way to Steam, one might conclude that the new logo and music at the Baldur's Gate website are tied into that particular project.
That's interesting.

Also, the Steam overlay doesn't play very well with BG2. It kinda sticks to the UI when you pull it down again.

Maybe if it's a re-release on an updated engine... Would be nice. Just don't remake the character portraits, http://img1.imagebanana.com/img/f62w2bnh/1328420284001.jpg

If Atari has the rights, then it might have something to do with the big announcement they have planned. Aren't Hasbro the owners of Wizards of the Coast, and in turn the IPs themselves? So that makes them the ones who hand out the licenses.

When most people think of "the problem with licenced games" they usually think of crappy film tie-ins. The real problem with licenced games is that you can never keep track of who actually owns a franchise or parts thereof. Still every now and then somebody busts through the red-tape and miracles happen, so maybe we're in luck.

I just finished the first game for the first time not too long ago. A few false starts, and it took a lot longer than expected, but I'll be damned if it wasn't awesome. So far the second game loooks to be even better. Except Imoen dual-classed as a mage; don't know who thought that was a good idea.

Holy Child of Bhaal!

I'm going to be honest and say that I don't really expect much, but I'm still excited. BG is amazing.

I hope it's not an iOS port, that doesn't interest me at all.

I can't imagine wanting to play a long old school RPG on an iPad. Where do you play it? Not something you'd be playing for short periods on the road, and at home you might as well play on PC.

It's handled by Beamdog. A HD remake at best, otherwise a port.

Wizards of the Coast owns the setting, so they pretty much definitely own the right to the series. My first instinct is to say that it won't be a sequel, considering BioWare made Dragon Age specifically so that they would have their own IP rather than relying on WOTC, but if it's being done by a different developer, I suppose it's possible.

Hasbro owns D&D and Forgotten Realms trademarks, not Baldur's Gate.

Then my guess would be that it's almost certainly Atari that has the rights, and judging from their recent D&D title (Daggerdale) I'm not so sure they'd be up to handling a huge undertaking like BG3.

In reading WotC's recent modules for 4e, I don't really want them to make any computer game titles. Especially not BG series.

New quotes in the source code.

Looks like they're changing it every day until we finally get a proper announcement.
