NPC's reactions to my character: loving it

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:00 am

the lines themselves are actually good. what people are complaining about mostly is the repetition and the triggers are messed up when you become head of certain guilds. also, comments seem to be based on the last skills you increased, even though it doesn't fit with your character build. some also don't like the omniscience the populace has regarding your character. a couple tweaks to triggers and frequency and it would all work extremely well.

Agreed. And it truly doesn't take ANY work to add rows to a database. Something like this can be done in a simple patch. The most difficult part would be creating the new lines. For that, Bethesda just needs to run out to a LARPers convention (or whatever they have), or even Comic-Con, sit them down and give them scenarios... "If someone were to walk past you under these circumstances, what would your reaction be?"

10 people could probably knock out about 500 new sayings in a couple hours... get 'em jacked on redbull and put them in front of Skyrim, you'll end up with thousands of new lines by the end of the week. Then it's a matter of editing (a couple people for a month) and actually adding them to the database and packaging the patch, Configuration Management, Testing, QA, etc (probably 4 people for a couple months)... Total of roughly 11 man-months worth of work which can be done in about 3.5 calendar months... We could have thousands of new sayings by early Summer.... Get on it Bethesda! :poke:

I started levelling my enchanting, now guards ask me to enchant their swords.

Too bad you can't actaully reply, "Yes I can" and actually do it :)

Let's not forgot followers.

I'm so tired of having to check Lydia's armor class (gear and/or weapons), or give her some gear to carry, and hear her say: "I'm sworn to carry your burden."

Please, enough already.

The commenting is much better thought out and realistic than in Oblivion. In Oblivion, I hated it (as a male character) when some bloke would say, "Look at those arms!" It was gay.

Now he says, "You use your hands for your swords" etc, which is more the sort of comment that some stranger might actually say.... Seeing my two handed sword on my back. And he doesn`t sound like he`s worshipping me either, just making a slightly jealous\respectful comment.

Psss, I know who you are, Hail Sithis!
Is it true what they say about you and the dark brotherhood?

Are we all such poor assassins that everyone and their grandmother knows about us?

good voice acting, poorly implemented, repetative, annoying. The ONLY one I have heard that makes me chuckle or seems even remotely appropiate during gameplay is
"I find you're wolfish grin, unsettling."

All the rest of them come at completely inappropiate times, I hear the dual wield one while i'm running around in mage robes, with firebolt equipped in both hands. I"M Not Even Holding a Weapon!

It just picks one at random that your character has the skills for and says it.

It could have been better, it always can be better. But it's not nearly as immersion breaking as some are trying to make it if you have a little bit of imagination.

I.E: I was breaking into this house because the guild marked it as containing valuable itens inside. When I opened one of the doors there was a huge man with an even bigger axe staring at me. Instead of splitting my head in two he asked me for help to find his missing brother.

If I was one of the nitpickers I would rush to this forum and open a thread about how the stupid AI didn't recognize that I was a thief robbing their house and didn't kill me on sight. But I can think out of the box, so I just pretended that he offered me a deal. As I'm a sneaky kind of guy I could try and get some information about his brother from their rival family and doing so he wouldn't kill me for breaking into his house. It fitted perfectly in the context of the situation and the immersion was intact.

There are other examples I could list but I think you get my meaning.

Use your brains people, it's not that hard.

Having no voiced dialogue would not be a problem either: Just use a little bit of imagination, right?

Yep that's the RP part of RPG.

If you need to be spoonfed everything I feel sorry for you because you're missing on a great game.

they could start with letting obsidian handle the dialogue and writing. i wonder if they fired a bunch of writers because even fallout 3 had way better righting than skyrim and this game is supposed to be their flagship game.
Really ? F3 ? "I'll show you a real tunnelsnake"-Fallout 3 ? I really don't see any change in quality from F3 to Skyrim.

...and it's not really surprising. It's kind of expected of Bethesda (great sandbox, bad writing). I like your Obsidian idea, though -too bad that after what happened with NV we probably wont see any Bethesda-Obsidian cooperation again. Pity, really.

Judging from the amount of "assassin's" corpses littering the sides of various roads, yes, they are

I completely agree. It's just that the justification for adding voiced dialogue to the game was that it "increases immersion". How does repetitive dialogue increase immersion? Even though it seems to be a profoundly unpopular opinion on this forum, I'm still in favor of completely text-based dialogue. The voice-based one is half-arsed, and none is better than half-arsed. Also, having the dialogue as text makes it easier and cheaper to generate, easier to distribute, since it takes less disk space/bandwidth, and easier to edit even 15minutes before the game is supposed to go gold, if there is need to.

The thing is, they don't really need to add any more lines to make it ten times better, just fix the issues with inappropriate dialogue.

For example, after you become harbinger, the "what do you do, fetch the mead?" line should never again be used. Also, there needs to be a bit better algorithm for decided what to comment about. Someone with maxed heavy armor, block, and one-handed, but with say 30 sneak shouldn't be hearing, "hands to yourself, sneak thief!" In fact, the level of skill, unless really high, shouldn't even be used at all. How would they know you use two-handed weapons if you are wearing a one handed mace and a shield?

Shouldn't be all that difficult to fix really, but I wouldn't count on a fix from Bethesda. I don't doubt someone will mod a nice dialogue fix though.

Bethseda already showed they capacite to create Rpg games lik skyrim with alot of dialogue options(Fallout 3).But did Obsidian worked with them while they were making fallout 3?

i find it funny when they say " is that..fur?..comming out of your ears?"

im like

" of course it is you fetcher, im a [censored]in' khajiit i have fur all over my body and YES I HAVE A JERI CURL, NOW TAKE THIS VASELINE AND GREASE IT UP [censored] "

Oh, I hear that too. I thought it was because I'm a werewolf, as I play a nord.

On that subject, there should probably be stricter penalties/bonuses based on race. I mean, if Khajiit NPCs are not even allowed in the cities, I think it's a bit odd that a Khajiit player character is treated as normal. Would be neat if, once you became Thane of a hold as a Khajiit, the rest of your brethren were allowed entry into the city.

I started levelling my enchanting, now guards ask me to enchant their swords.

I levelled my speech to mid-80's, now I get people giving me cynical expressions like "yeah, I heard about you and your sweet-talking"

I did a mission where
Spoiler
I had to kill some Thalmor, and as SOON as I got back to town, a guard says to me "heard you gave the Thalmor a black eye, you really know how to choose your enemies".

I find out I'm Dragon Born, in front of soldiers. And now word has spread and some people comment on it.

I made myself some Ebony armor, finally after saving up Ingots and making enough Iron Daggers to choke a river. As soon as I left Skyforge, the first guard I saw said "by the gods, Ebony armor, t'is a grand sight".

I ran through town without clothes to go faster, and a kid yelled "haha you're naked".

A dragon attacks a town, and I hear people commenting on it.

I think these are great and are enough for me to think that this video game is organic and reacting to the things I do.
Back to adventuring...
Yup, I'm absolutely loving this game too. Even though the dialogue is a bit repetitive it doesn't get old.

add that to the pile along with wearing imperial officer armor and not a single stormcloak stops you in windhelm. not even to question you.

That one really irks me. I kept guard, imperial, thalmor and stormcloack uniforms thinking I might be able to use them for stealth or infiltration but nobody cares what you're wearing and everyone recognizes it's "you".

Yeah the commenting is great until you hear "You're an alchemist, huh? Can you brew me an ale?" for the 1000th time. I'd appreciate it more if it wasn't repeated to me over and over again wherever I go. Like arrow in the knee jokes.

If, when I went to the mall, every person I walked by gave me a verbal glimpse into their life, I'd quit going to the mall.

That's where most of peoples' issues stem from, from what I've gathered.
