NPC's reactions to my character: loving it

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:05 am

I started levelling my enchanting, now guards ask me to enchant their swords.

I levelled my speech to mid-80's, now I get people giving me cynical expressions like "yeah, I heard about you and your sweet-talking"

I did a mission where
Spoiler
I had to kill some Thalmor, and as SOON as I got back to town, a guard says to me "heard you gave the Thalmor a black eye, you really know how to choose your enemies".

I find out I'm Dragon Born, in front of soldiers. And now word has spread and some people comment on it.

I made myself some Ebony armor, finally after saving up Ingots and making enough Iron Daggers to choke a river. As soon as I left Skyforge, the first guard I saw said "by the gods, Ebony armor, t'is a grand sight".

I ran through town without clothes to go faster, and a kid yelled "haha you're naked".

A dragon attacks a town, and I hear people commenting on it.

I think these are great and are enough for me to think that this video game is organic and reacting to the things I do.
Back to adventuring...

Yeah the commenting is great until you hear "You're an alchemist, huh? Can you brew me an ale?" for the 1000th time. I'd appreciate it more if it wasn't repeated to me over and over again wherever I go. Like arrow in the knee jokes.

Agreed, but I also feel a little iffy about it when my badass nord warrior walks by a guard and hears, "Hands to yourself, sneaky thief" because I've raised my sneak skill a little with skillbooks.

Too bad the NPCs completely ignore your race (they only sometimes say few comments here and there). You can also wear a full Daedric armor and the Vigilants of Stendarr will completely ignore it, etc.

They complain because of reasons like this above. There is no consequence to anything you do. That is why there is complaints.

I have fallen so in love with my power that if I walk past a fort and a bandit even looks at me the wrong way I will wipe out the whole building. Ok I will sneak back at night and get them one by one! You can imagine my rage at: 'Someone stole your sweetroll?'. I mean the gall :)

add that to the pile along with wearing imperial officer armor and not a single stormcloak stops you in windhelm. not even to question you.

NPCs in town knows everything about the player. It's scary. Even if when he belongs to a secret guild like the Thieves' or the Brotherhood.

On the other side, guild memebers are completely oblivious to the player role... They treat their guild master like the last of the newbies.

The problem is the guard asking me to enchant his sword when my enchanting skill is about 20 or so. I have One Handed maxed, Heavy Armor Maxed, Destruction Maxed, Sneak Maxed, Speech maxed(A LOT OF SELLING!!!!), Smithing Maxed, Alchemy Maxed, and he comments on my enchanting skill...?

Not to mention the whole fetching mead for the companions when you are Harbinger comments from the guards...

Not that big of a deal from me but this coupled with many other things makes this game feel very rushed. I feel like I am playing a rough version of what this game is supposed to be.

they could start with letting obsidian handle the dialogue and writing. i wonder if they fired a bunch of writers because even fallout 3 had way better righting than skyrim and this game is supposed to be their flagship game.

*Conjurer mage character. Archery 37. Doesn't carry a single bow on her.*

Guard: "Favor the bow, eh?"

I tried to dig the data files for a variable that sets at what skill level the guards start commenting on your skills, but couldn't find one. It's probably set in the dialogue itself. Can't wait for the Construction Kit. :stare:

For me it's annoying because I levelled my speech to mid-30s using "natural" skill advances. (i.e. no concentration) and I hear that message.

I raised my sneak to mid 30s through glitches.

And yes. Everyone says I'm a sneak thief. Despite the fact that I haven't sneaked in my life, or stolen anything, and every increase has been because of a glitch where I die in combat, reload and find that my sneak skill increases because the game registers me as being in combat and undetected.

Yes comments from NPC's are great!
"Gods gave you two hands and you use both for weapon. I can respect that."
"You have your both hands on weapon like Ysgramor himself."
"Stormblade, that's an honor."
"My favorite drinking buddy, have you any ale?"

Exactly. Skyrim is a great game, but I don't know what it is with Bethesda and dialogue; they appear to have a huge blind spot for it, since it's always the one great weakness of their games.

Me, I routinely murder the farmer who turns up about an inch from your face, incessantly complaining about how the frost is damaging his crops. I care. I do. Just not in this lifetime.

the lines themselves are actually good. what people are complaining about mostly is the repetition and the triggers are messed up when you become head of certain guilds. also, comments seem to be based on the last skills you increased, even though it doesn't fit with your character build. some also don't like the omniscience the populace has regarding your character. a couple tweaks to triggers and frequency and it would all work extremely well.

In terms of the dubious dialogue quality, I partly blame voice acting. I assume it's supposed to make games more immersive, but since it limits dialogue options (as every line needs to be recorded by an actor) and since it's painfully obvious that one actor voices twenty or so characters, I actually find it lessens immersion. Also, voice acting basically turns every instance of dialogue into a sometimes excruciatingly long cut-scene. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer text-only dialogue any day of the week.

Yeah. I can see Bethesda crew calling voice actors back and recording thousands new lines and translating to several differents languages just because weenies said that on forums. Pretty cool.
