Seriously i think it`s nothing like Oblivion. It feels more like a modernised Morrowind for me.
I play in 3rd person only and love the combat, the finishers make it feel nothing like Oblivion. If anything, more like Two Worlds 2 but VASTLY better than that game.

Morrowind 2 maybe with about 10 years of dev time in between. It's Skyrim. It has dragons.

Some of the responses in this thread are just pure comedy. I have never laughed so hard. I loved oblivion. Loved it! Vanilla on my 360 and modded version on my PC. But skyrim so far just kills it! Straight kills it like William Wallace riding in on that guy sleeping in his bed while on his horse and usin the chain and mace on him, type of kill.

Now if I could just get my spell crafting and degraded weapons back.......

Wait...what? I played Oblivion. Are you sure you did?

Let's be objective here-

Combat: Different system than Oblivion except that you wear weapons and armor. Different proficiency system, addition of perks. Elimination of 'power attacks' by for instance attacking while moving backward to cause an enemy to be knocked down or strafing and attacking, disarming the opponent. No more separate cuirass and greaves. No blade skill. No blunt skill. Replaced by one hand and two hand. Addition of finishing moves.

This is not an improvement from Oblivion, it's a different system

Iventory: No 'paper doll'. Odd UI, but similar to Oblivion in the manner that it lets you look at an Inventory at least. Little things have changed, like how books are read

This is not an improvement as it uses an oddly designed UI and works differently than Oblivion's. Different type of inventory

magic: No more 'one shot' spells for everything- now you hold the button down and continue that flame. Spells in either hand. Spells in both hands. Same spell in both hands. Nothing like Oblivion

This is not an improvement from Oblivion, it's a different system

Worldspace: Obviously created differently than Oblivion was

This is not an improvement from Oblivion, it's a different way of doing it

Interactions with NPCs: similar to Oblivion in that NPCs talk to you. Gone is the speechcraft mini-game. Instead, options for speaking are present. Sometimes with options you really shouldn't know

This is not an improvement from Oblivion, it's a different system

Shall I continue??? The game is different. Just like Oblivion was not 'an improvement' of Morrowind. It's different. Same genre, different way of designing the game
Dude, what you just said might be the Dumbest crap I ever read. You could say that about basically anything "its a different bleh so cant be compared" SURE AS HELL IT CAN! Wrong Wrong Wrong Wrong Wrong. Different ways of "doing it or that" can also be said to be BETTER, I could eat food through my nose, but I use my mouth, because its a BETTER WAY TO DO IT, at the same time its also DIFFERENT from using the NOSE. Moron..

OT: I liked Oblivion, but I like Skyrim aloooot more, I never tried Morrowind. I only need the bugs, glitches, random crashes and the higher FPS = insane vertical mouse speed bs. If that were taken care of Skyrim would be the closest thing to a Perfect game Ive ever played.

I don't know why, but your William Wallace imagery made me lol pretty hard.

And yeah, Skyrim basically crushes Oblivion's face.

Let me say it again for those who misunderstood.

How much this is like Oblivion is a matter of perspective.

Those of us who have now spent significant time with both know most if not all of the changes that have taken place, therefore we say "No, It's not like Oblivion"

Those with only a passing knowledge of the games will not understand all the changes and think that it is more like Oblivion.

I am not sure why so many people here act like it is a slap in their face to compare it to Oblivion. Oblivion was a great game in it's own right.

The animation is pathetic my ass! Compare the animation of Skyrim to any other game out there and it will always be the highest or at least equal with another. Don't you dare go there, buddy.

Disagreed. It should feel similar it's the same series, would you really want a totally different game? Turn based or something? Anime graphics? Hit combos and numbers flying around the screen?

Don't forget about Fatalities.

It;'s a biit early for me to judge but I feel like I am playing a game that is four years old?!

It's just Oblivion 2. Combat is no better and the animations are pathetic for 2011.

I will srill enjoy the game no doubt but I had hoped for a step up from Oblivion.

If i was the boss of Beth, i would have done the same... if Beth made a power pc TES game that don't run on 360/PS3 you lose money.

I loved Oblivion but from my experience so far this is definetly a huge improvement over that. Most things are designed a whole lot better I won't mention the item menu or the journal because they are the worst in any game ever

well I like it, personally as far as overall quality, it's at least on par with Morrowind (way above Oblivion), I can easily see myself spending years playing this game.

I was unsure a bit at first, kept having trouble with my character getting massacred, so I tried creating a new character. Within an hour I was absolutely amazed. I had created a new character with the goal of doing more or less the same things, but with a different skill set, yet everything kept turning out differently. I'd take a slightly different route through the woods and stumble upon a questline which would take me somewhere else.

How do you people keep playing games over and over. For me its a one time thing usualy. Do a quest once and your done.. Thats it.. its not fun if it has to be done more than once without some sort of reason to it.

I'm not criticising btw I want to understand because I wish i could do that :(

For me I am worried about how long I will want to play the game.. I hope its for ever cause its a great game and I plan to mod it.

Personaly for me 4 player co op fun stuff is what makes game more playable and fun to repeat. I know this is hard to implement. Too late now anyways! :P

Dude the game is NOTHING like Oblivion. When I started playing the game; only a couple of hours after I knew I could never EVER go back to Oblivion or Morrowind. The thought of playing those two again literally makes me sick to my stomach  , and I actually love those two games.
