id like to think that skyrim's success is proof that games dont need mutliplayer and that mentality will start to die out, but reality is never that kind to me. it is far more likely that the will of all these... wonderful, social people... be answered with some kind of multiplayer component, no matter how stupid it might be. gamers no longer want games, they want something to facilitate them BSing around with their friends, or something to fill the void when they arent BSing around on some other social netwrok. its sad to say, but the people who want multiplayer more than outnumber the people who realize how much that will detract from the game.
most people never really consider logistics when they think of tacking on MP. most people dont consider much of anything; most posts i see in support of MP arent saying "OMG multiplayer would be awesome in TES", they are saying "eh...sure, why not.". people keep commenting "...as long as it doesnt take away from the single player" which is almost a contradictory statement in itself.
EVERY CENT AND EVERY SECOND SPENT ON MULTIPLAYER IS A CENT AND A SECOND TAKEN AWAY FROM SINGLE PLAYER
games are made on a strict budget and within a certain timeframe. the skill and talent of the developers is to come up with an interesting idea and make something as close to that vision as possible given these constraints. especially in modern times, devs never get as close to their vision as they would like. it is already a massive undertaking to weave all the single player elements of a game, especially one as massive as TES, without having to meticulously balance and playtest multiplayer. understand that saying "MP is cool as long as it doesnt effect single player" is like saying "cars are cool as long as they dont need any additional gas". it is logistically impossible for MP to not effect SP. that is our concern.
rockstar can pull this off because rockstar is a f**king boss with oodles of money and an artistic understanding that money is not all that makes a game great. bethesda is far less focused and far worse at engaging narratives, and the scale of TES games means that they really cant afford any distractions.
