I thought it would be cool if the only multiplayer in the game was that the person you face off with at the arena is controlled by another human. Every other aspect of the game could stay the same single player.

You guys do realize there are different ways to play online than mmo right?

Well duh yeah. I'm online when playing Skyrim and it's single player.

But the logical 'end game' for what's suggested is MMO, and much of what is being touted as 'good' is either MMO-like or has principles used in MMO.

"You can never say never to anything like that, but it's not what our focus is. This type of game is where our hearts are, what we get excited about, and that's what we want to focus on. We don't want to lose that focus and we never want to sacrifice anything in the singleplayer game just to have it be multiplayer."

Not even close. NWN was like an online tabletop RPG, and other times my friend and I dl'd a player made module that we adventured together in TCP/IP. NOTHING like mmo at all.

No

An Elder Scrolls MMO that is not part of the single-player series would be pretty fun though, and if it fails...well, then nobody will be asking for it again.

For once, we are in complete agreement.

Anyway, on topic, single player game, surprise huge hit when big games like COD and Battlefield are released, fastest seller on steam since, well, ever, and yet multi-player is apparently inevitable.

Bull, we've agreed before.

Much. Does not mean "All"

I cannot reply to every post made in the thread by my comments. When I say "much", I mean "much". So don't tell me that one game is different, so therefore I'm wrong by saying "much". That's just plain silly, especially when much of what is being said IS MMO like

OK, well... semantics and unquantifiable adjectives aside, there are other ways to play online besides mmo's and singleplayer over Steam. Sorry if I seem to be directing this at you in particular, but a general and true statement nonetheless playing Devil's Advocate on the "mp dumbs down games" sentiment.

id like to think that skyrim's success is proof that games dont need mutliplayer and that mentality will start to die out, but reality is never that kind to me. it is far more likely that the will of all these... wonderful, social people... be answered with some kind of multiplayer component, no matter how stupid it might be. gamers no longer want games, they want something to facilitate them BSing around with their friends, or something to fill the void when they arent BSing around on some other social netwrok. its sad to say, but the people who want multiplayer more than outnumber the people who realize how much that will detract from the game.

most people never really consider logistics when they think of tacking on MP. most people dont consider much of anything; most posts i see in support of MP arent saying "OMG multiplayer would be awesome in TES", they are saying "eh...sure, why not.". people keep commenting "...as long as it doesnt take away from the single player" which is almost a contradictory statement in itself.

EVERY CENT AND EVERY SECOND SPENT ON MULTIPLAYER IS A CENT AND A SECOND TAKEN AWAY FROM SINGLE PLAYER

games are made on a strict budget and within a certain timeframe. the skill and talent of the developers is to come up with an interesting idea and make something as close to that vision as possible given these constraints. especially in modern times, devs never get as close to their vision as they would like. it is already a massive undertaking to weave all the single player elements of a game, especially one as massive as TES, without having to meticulously balance and playtest multiplayer. understand that saying "MP is cool as long as it doesnt effect single player" is like saying "cars are cool as long as they dont need any additional gas". it is logistically impossible for MP to not effect SP. that is our concern.

rockstar can pull this off because rockstar is a f**king boss with oodles of money and an artistic understanding that money is not all that makes a game great. bethesda is far less focused and far worse at engaging narratives, and the scale of TES games means that they really cant afford any distractions.

Thing is, I would much rather see a developer focus resources on empowering the playerbase than on voice acting and story writing (rather have the community have that ability). Of course that is a different type of game than TES and I'm not saying it would work, but imagine if Bethesda created a powerful modding kit and DM client that allowed for the things that NWN was able to do while leaving the singleplayer experience entirely alone. I can at least dream. :)

Multiplayer would absolutely svck.

And then it'd make the single player svck.

Making the whole game svck :)

Bethesda has been wildly successful by doing things that the game industry experts say won't work anymore.

Games need to have a social aspect or people won't buy them.

Games need to be more simple and guide the player down a linear story path or people won't buy them.

Skyrim proves this all wrong.

Next!

Skyrim proves your first point right.

I'll never buy bethesda game if it will include multiplayer.

Multiplayer = less features in single player and simplified game

I just hope next fallout won't include multiplayer

I wouldn't mind a little co-op or the arena idea as options, but part of the allure of elder scrolls is that the only immature [censored] I have to put up with is myself.

Nah. You mentioned DA3 including multiplayer (or more likely a token multiplayer feature that'll be abandoned within a month of release), well neat. Anyone who wants to dike around in a fantasy setting with dragons and [censored] can do that in DA3. No need to ruin a great single player series to fill that need.

Skyrim doesn't... I just want a dev (any dev) to create a spiritual successor to NWN so I can become a hermit again for the next 10 years. :)

I wouldn't mind if TES went multi-player...just as long as they focus on the single player experience and give us a choice between the two. If the single player game-play suffers as a result of development time for multi-player, then it's time to say goodbye to my beloved TES series.

Who knows, that will be years and maybe another developer will take the mantle and give us an even richer single player sandbox rpg.
