An Open Letter to Bethesda (Freezing and Lag)

Post » Tue May 22, 2012 3:18 am

A really good post indeed OP!! ;) I'm having the exact same thoughts about this as you do.. This is the most anticipated patch ever, to be released for Skyrim, and if it does not fix the game, I'm done playing it! And I will then place my trust in Big Huge Games and their KOAR, which looks pretty darn good by the way!! But I'm getting that game anyway :D - Bethesda, DO NOT "ADRESS" THESE ISSUES!! FIX THEM!!

I agree with much of what was said in the original post, but I cannot help feeling disappointed because there is nothing we can do.

- The game was shipped broken to PS3 owners and that seemingly will never be acknowledged...ever.
- The game keeps winning awards and that is ALL that shows up on the Bethesda Blog. Bethesda's view of itself is not "damn we need to make this right" but is instead, "Everything is fine...see the game is great...everything is fine!"
- Todd Howard will be the keynote speaker for GDC in a few weeks and again people will pat him on the back for making a BUNDLE of money. (The game is BROKEN, so how Todd is a paragon of game development?)

Each of use writing a heartfelt letter here is pointless, it might be cathartic, but in the end it will not move the company to do better or solve the issues.

Sadly, this is most likely the realistic outcome of this fiasco. If they can't fix a simple coding problem in an amounted time of 6 years, when will they? Somehow EVERY other game developer seems to get along making relatively playable games, not saying games are free from bugs far from it, but at least they ARE PLAYABLE. Minor bugs like walking through walls, misplaced npcs, and broken quests are a part of the gaming world. But crashings that make consoles fry(300$ consoles that the 99%(US) view as pretty costly) and extreme fps drops are intolerable, on top of many more bugs that just ruin the immersion!

What I dont understand is, how is Sony not getting involved with this. Its going to cause massive losses for them as well. Personally, I will think twice about buying a PS4 and will probably buy an Xbox instead due to the terrible ports that the Playstation seems to get.

I have asked the same question myself and have emailed Sony about it. Sony offered the standard fix solution, but whoever read my email, did not respond to the issue... PS3 is already losing customers over this! Lots of people are either buying for X-Box or PC or trading thier PS3 game in for PC or X-Box....

OP You gave voice to everything I've been feeling since the game freezing issue hit me over two months ago. The only difference is that this was the first Bethesda game i've ever purchased on anything other than a PC or XBOX/XBOX 360. I have been a fan of TES since Daggerfall. I puchased both my original XBOX and the 360 for the express purpose of being able to continue my adventures in Tamriel without having to buy a new PC. I played Morrowind and Oblivion for years at a time making every sort of character I could imagine. my least played character in Oblivion had no less than 300 hours of playtime. This time round I was forced to buy TES's newest chapter on the PS3. Never once did I expect while I waited eagerly in line for the midnight release of Skyrim; the amount of frustration I would have to endure just over two weeks later. My PS3 is showing signs of impending hardware failure, likely due to the frequent hard freezing I experienced and sadly ignored while playing this game. *continues

I have watched this forum since my console failed to boot up after a particularly nasty hard freeze. After a few paniced hours I was able to get my PS3 functioning again but the HDD had to be completely reformated in the process due to irrepairible corruption to the OS partition and nearly 10 gigs of usable space. I've owned my slim for just over 2 years and never once experienced any freezing playing any of the other eleven games I own on the system. I can't prove that it was Skyrim that caused the damage, but I did not feel like taking any chances. So I have waited as have most of you for a fix for the game. I haven't posted prior this because I am a patient man. That said and as painful as it is for me I have decided that 1.4 does not fix the root issues causing the system lock-ups, I can't risk having my meager though hard earned income go to further waste on a game that CAN be fixed but MAY not be fixed. I loved my adventures in Tamriel. It would be a shame for this to be the last one, Bethesda. - a fan

Sony must still be in shock about losing $207 Million the 4th quarter of 2011 so they can't move. To the OP nice post I agree with you.

Hello fellow gamers and thank you for your support, that felt great. And to those few that didn't, thats ok. I don't agree
with everything that goes on in the world either. So we are cool. Perhaps we can agree on something else in the future.

So, we are now reaching 2 days since posting this thread and not a single word from Bethesda. But I'm an optimist so
I keep hoping they will. I truly believe there are some really good people in the company, and they will do the right
thing eventually. I know they will.

It have been two busy days. I'm writing letters to people and companies that may be interested in the story. I have
not sent any yet. I'm waiting to see how this "forum thing" is developing first.

Anyway, I have even sent an mail to Bethesda and I need your help guys. The idea was to have my letter forwarded to
Howard and Hines. Don't know if it ever will, but I got a weird response from the technical support. See below. I need
your help to decipher it (the part in bold text):
Hi,

We thank you for your input. gamesas does monitor their forums, even if they aren't posting responses. Just so you know, Skyrim, as well
as our other titles released on consoles were approved by Sony and Microsoft Quality Assurance before their release.

Best Regards
His/Her Name
Technical Support

I'm still waiting to receive a response on my last email. But I can't for the whole world understand why it matter that
Sony and Microsoft approved the games? Am I stupid or what? Or is my English lacking perhaps. What are they
saying? I'm reading that we should blame the console manufacturers for approving Fallout 3, New Vegas and Skyrim?
Please give me your thoughts on this. Because I find it very weird.

We are all waiting for patch 1.4. At the moment we do not know if they have sent it or not. This week they said, but
they also said January a couple of times. I have made a commitment to leave everything Bethesda if this patch fails.
I can't take the aggravation anymore, when the game(s) keep crashing on me. So everything depends on this one
little patch. What are your feelings about this? What do you plan to do if it fails again? I'm not asking what you will
do if the patch works because we will all do the same thing probably - enjoy the hell out of this game. I'm asking if
it's not.

Thanks again guys. And have a nice Sunday, where ever you are.

They're trying to pin the blame for all of this on sony by saying they "approved" this game. But what I highly doubt is sony playing maybe 100 hours in(roughly where the lag starts)to experience all these problems. At first skyrim ran very dandy I ran into no problems(except npc bugs etc.) so that is what sony probably took from that. And if they did play very far in...I don't see why they would slight their customers by releasing a broken product.

Maybe they should look further into the coding of the game next time, both corporations.

Huh. Your parents said it was okay for you to do that? Oh, no. No that's okay. That totally makes it alright.
You know what? I think you deserve your $60. Don't spend it all in one place now, okay?

Man. If I had said something like that to an angry customer back when I worked for CC I would have been fired
on the spot. You're supposed to resolve issues, not try to rationalize and argue with the customer- especially
when they didn't call for it.

Did they say that to you? If they did then WOW I'm shocked, this company is rotten from top to bottom.

Sony or any console manufacturer should put Bethesda on a watch list. Any game that comes through from Bethesda, should be put under extreme scrutiny, and if it's as bad as Skyrim Bethesda should be told to get it right or you're not releasing the game.

I completely agree with what you said tc. I play oblivion which ran fine on the ps3, not a fan of fallout so I didn't know that they were not working properly. Fast forward to now, I haven't played the games for a week since is unplayable. If 1.4 doesn't fix my game, you can be sure that i'll never give them more of my money

I still remember being in training and listening to a CC recording of a young woman that was trying to
explain to an angry customer that his phone service was certified and approved by, and I can't believe
how close the terms are, quality assurance. This sent the customer (who didn't even ask for that info
or care that it was) into an immediate rage.

The young lady was promptly fired afterwards.

Now I can't say where I worked due to a contract I signed, but the goal is to never irritate or argue
with the customer. Find the problem and resolve it. NEVER try to justify or rationalize the problem- that
will only make matters worse and more than likely confuse/insult/hurt the customer. It's basic CC.

Never trivialize or diminish a problem. Fix it. That was the theme. If a problem couldn't be fixed, then
you are supposed to set up something we called "expectations" in a polite and professional manner
and then direct them to a source that could more effectively solve the problem.

Very well written, and thank you from everyone who gives a damn :)

Did Skyrim equal, or exceed Fallout 3 as far as bad publicity? I ask this because I didn't play, or follow the news surrounding Fallout 3's issues (past what I've read on this forum) For me, Skyrim is the most current well known botched game that didn't have a chance to "slip through the cracks". That said, I think with this amount of preasure on them they would/should consider fixing Skyrim so it plays as intended. Subjective or not, most of us know if a game plays as intended. Will 1.4 be the last patch? Not likely, as Bethesda has "suggested" there are more to follow. The 1.4 certainly doesn't cover everything, I think it's still a piece of a larger fix.

I've had it! I love this game. I can't take this though. I turned off autosaves which seemed to make the game not freez anymore (but did result in me dying and going waaaay back a few times) and today the game finally got so bad for me I had to shut it off. Tonite I played again and the lag was better but when loading to go into a building, the game froze. I had not saved in about 45 min but in that 45 I bought and sold enchanted fast traveled etc. COME ON! I bought this game for $60 which is what is expected of me from the devs. Guess what? I expect a quality game for my $ !!! I have 4 kids work full-time and don't have time to waste or money! Again this game is so fun and I love it but this is breaking my heart! The thing is I have an xbox so if they would have just put it out on xbox I would have got it ! They sold it on ps3 with no warning that it wouldn't work and so I assumed it was okay to buy! This is completely unacceptable and if my ps3 is damaged I will be looking online for others so we can get together on this

His point being "if they ONLY released it for xbox".

Then he wouldn't have this problem.

Just wanted to chime in. After not playing skyrim on my ps3 for the last 8 weeks due constant lock ups I decided to give it an other shot yesterday. I unintalled everything on my ps3 and reformatted it. After 3 hours of reformatting I reintalled only netflix and skyrim. I played skyrim yesterday for about 3 hours. I stopped and exited the game 45 minutes or so to be on the safe side. I had all auto saves off and never overwrote any existing save. Each time I exited I would delete the extra saves I had created leaving me with only one save to load the next time I started the game. Yesterday was ok just occansional drops in fps which I can live with at this point.

I started skyrim this morning with a save around 4mb and 3 hours of gameplay, keep mind skyrim this save and netflicks are the only things on my ps3, and the game went into infinite load screens twice on the third atempt I manged to load my save and and the first area I tried to load resulted in a third infinite load screen. I gave up again at this point.

I am extremely disapointed in this game. I paid $60 for the right to use the skyrim software and I am unable to. Skyrim needs to be repaired.

And we should'nt need two PS3s. Skyrim should work perfectly on a PS3 filled with data from other games. As long as all the others game work fine, Skyrim should as well.

If Skyrim is the only game having problems, the error is in Skyrim, not the machine or other game software.

I haven't played Skyrim in a few weeks, just couldn't handle the frustrations anymore. I really hope that patch 1.4 fixes the major issues so I can jump back into the game.

That said, I really think Bethesda should respond to the person that wrote this. His story is representatve of a lot of PS3 gamers and if Bethesda really cares about their fans (and not just the $M's), they will acknowledge this.

Bravo! I tip my hat to you lankin81!
Im with you as well, if 1.4 patch doesnt fix the ps3 version & make skyrim playable then I to will turn my back on Besthesda for good, I will also go out of my way to let other gamers know that Besthesda sells broken games, for those who are out of the loop. I stoped playing about 3 weeks ago due to bugs/freezes. Im playing Space Marine to pass the time.
Shame on you besthesda! Its been almost 3 months & your games doesnt work properly.
