An Open Letter to Bethesda (Freezing and Lag)

Post » Tue May 22, 2012 11:56 am

First, let me start by saying that I'm from Sweden (home to the real nords?) and that my English is not that great.
But that doesn't make what I have to say any less important. And my English is probably better than your Swedish.

You Bethesda are selling an experience. All game developers must understand that games are different from other forms
of media. A movie last 1-2 hours and if it's great you perhaps talk about it with friends the day after. Games on
the other hand, if they are great, we can talk about for hours, days and years. I played games 20 years ago that
we still talk about, me and my friends. That still gets my heart warm just thinking about. Games are immersive and
nothing else can even come close to it. We really invest in them, heart and soul. I’m not a fanatic, just a regular
guy who enjoys a good time. It’s that simple.

I started playing Bethesda games when Oblivion was released. And it caught me big time. It was a game made for me.
Then Fallout 3 came, and omg. Fallout 3 is the game that gets me going. That game speaks to me on a level that other
games never have, except a handful others. It's the sandbox, the free roaming, the world and the gameplay. These
games just work on me. That’s my game style. To get caught in the story and just let the hours fly away. To make a joke:
They make drugs that don't work this good. And I know millions of people feel the exact same way like I do. When games
are good they are really darn good. And then life is great.

When Skyrim was announced I got unbelievably excited. If not every day I searched for information, new videos, new
pictures, new interviews. And I bought at least 10 gaming magazines during that time. If it contained something about
Skyrim I needed to read it. Not every game gets me going like this, thankfully. My point is, I had been waiting for this
game for years, like so many others. But...

Like I said before, Fallout 3 is a game that I can talk about for hours. But after playing it for a while it started lagging
and freeze. Then it started to do that a lot. But I kept playing it to the end. But it was hard work because of all the
lag and the freezing. And then we have all the bugs and glitches. But I loved it anyway. I started a new character and
this time I knew what to do and what not to do regarding quest bugs. But after playing for a while the lag started again,
and then the freezing. But I kept playing it. At the end the game started to get to my nerves. It wasn't fun anymore.
Playing a game for hour on end makes it less fun, we all know that. But that is not why I stopped. I just couldn't
take all the problems anymore. I was spending more time troubleshooting than actually playing it.

Just like Skyrim I was waiting like a maniac for New Vegas to be released. Searching anything new about the game.
Building up huge expectations. And why shouldn’t I? Who makes two broken games in a row?
The game was released, I started playing it and boom, Fallout 3 all over again, but worse. I loved playing it but in the
end all the bugs got to me. I was a trooper, trying to play through freezing and lag. It was torture for my PS3, and
for my mind. I did not give up easily that's for sure. But I was again spending more time troubleshooting than actually
playing it. And the mixed feelings that come with it. You love playing it, but then it breaks down on you, and you
start hating it. It’s like a love/hate relationship.

New Vegas knocked my teethes out. So I have not bought any DLCs for it. You know, If I can't play the game what's
the point, right? And that makes me really sad and angry, because by now you all know how much I love this franchise,
if you have been reading this far. And I would love to be able to play the DLCs today, if possible.

Back to Skyrim.
Despite all the problems with Fallout 3, New Vegas (and Oblivion) I was again building up expectations. And when
Todd Howard told us that they had a new system for minimizing bugs, and that they would work hard to make
Skyrim bug free. Omg, I was like a fish, all they had to do was to reel me in. And they did big time. In my mind the
game was going to be special. My type of game and this time playable. No more troubleshooting, no more torture.
I again pre ordered it and, well, we all know the Skyrim story by now. For me, this is the worst one. It freezes
constantly and lag like you wouldn’t believe. And I have tried almost everything to get this game running somewhat
stable. But it's a mess. And then all the quest bugs to add to that! It breaks my heart, it truly does.

Bethesda, by now you have the worst track record of all companies when it comes to bugs, glitches and other issues.
All your games have game breaking issues. Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Oblivion and Skyrim. I makes me wonder if you
don't take pride in your work? What is going on? Whatever it is, it's been going on for years now. And it needs to
stop. You people are a hazard to the Fallout and the Elder Scrolls franchise. No one will buy your titles if you keep
this up.

With Skyrim the eyes of the gaming world are looking at you and you are at a crossroad. If patch 1.4 doesn't fix my
problems I will walk away and never look back again. And this is one of your biggest fan saying this. A lot of people
have given up already. I'm soldiering on. But I'm also at a crossroad. Your games give me the biggest highs but
also the biggest lows. And I have had enough now. I'll give 1.4 a chance, and then I'm gone. It kills me to say this, it
really does.
Games are my hobby. I have money and I like to spend them. But you will not be getting anymore from me if you
fail again. And you will lose all my support. I have perhaps made at least 10 other people buy the games on my
recommendation (I did love you once you know). But that will stop. It’s like a snowball going downhill. People
remember and people talk. Years from now they might not talk about you anymore? Something to think about!

Either way, you should really start talking with your fans. I don’t see any Bethesda employee on the forum, talking.
And acknowledge the problems and tell us what’s going on and what your plan is to fix things. I can accept bugs and
glitches in games. But only if the company let me know why, how and when. All you are saying is when (when it will
be fixed). But then it doesn't get fixed. You ignore it and leave the games in a broken state. Why accept this? Why lie
about it (Pete Hines)? If you know how to fix it, why not fix it then? Release a new patch for Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
I would love to play them again. And people still buy them, and the DLCs. Why not support us a little bit, like we have
supported you guys?

Like I said, it breaks my heart. But this is it. It's all or nothing now.

To the moderators: The problems I have, and have had for years, need to be sorted. This is the Hardware and Software
Issues Subforums, and I believe the problems are related to both hardware and software. So I think this is a valid topic.
If it’s not in your opinion, please move it to the right forum in that case. Please don’t just delete it.
To be more specific, the problems seem to be the same as in Fallout and New Vegas. My biggest concern is the freezing,
that happen at random. I can never replicate them. The last time I played, some week after patch 1.3 released, the
game froze 5 times in an hour. Sometimes when loading a new area, and sometimes out in the open.
I (we) really need someone from Bethesda to come here and explain why this happens? And what they are doing to fix it.
If this isn’t serious business, I don’t know what is. Peoples money are at stake here. Perhaps even their consoles? Not
to mention your reputation.
So please leave this topic open.

Thanks for reading all this. I had to get it all out. And big love to all gamers out there. I feel your frustration and I hope
you can feel mine? Thanks.

Wonderful. This game is such an excellent game without it's flaws. I'm tired of constantly being on these forums looking for an announcement from Bethesda. 1.4 does have a chance of fixing the horrible problems we have been experiencing. As it goes in a Turkish saying, “To believe a business impossible is the way to make it so.” .

Aye. Well said. My major gripe to date has been lack of official communication. Putting info on bethblog and not on here the game forums speaks of laziness and arrogance. Towards paying customers that's shameful. Towards fans and devotees it's downright tragic.

Oh yes and to clarify I have lag, occasional freeze and various bugs. All potentially fixed in 1.4 I await it with baited breath, a certain trepidation and a large dose of probably not.

You are wrong in one thing. People wont stop talking about Bethesta.. They will again, when they reelase a new game.... Everyone will say LIES... There they go again... Lies to sell broken, glitchie and laggy stuff... Unfinished games... BAH... Ill just wait for the forum to open and see what happens when people start screaming... Maybe buy it a year later after all glitches have been patched and USED....

Like you said... its like a Snowball rolling down the hill... getting bigger and bigger... But full of trash and rocks in direction of Bethesta...
Lets see if they didnt lie this time and they really fix the game. We will just have to wait.

Yes, Yes!!! Talos the mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give praise! We are but maggots, writhing in the filth of our own corruption! While you have ascended from the dung of mortality, and now walk among the stars! But you were once man! Aye! And as man, you said, "Let me show you the power of Talos Stormcrown, born of the North, where my breath is long winter." "I breathe now, in royalty, and reshape this land which is mine. I do this for you, Red Legions, for I love you." Aye, Love! Even as man, great Talos cherished us. For he saw in us, in each of us, the future of Skyrim! The future of Tamriel! And there it is, friends! The ugly truth! We are the children of Man! Talos is the true god of Man! Ascended from flesh, to rule the realm of spirit! The very idea is inconceivable to our elven overlords! Sharing the heavens with us? With Man? Ha! They can barely tolerate our presence on earth! Today, they take away your faith. But what of tomorrow? Do the elves take your homes? Your businesses? Your children? Your very lives? And what does the empire do? Nothing! Nay, worse than nothing! The Imperial machine enforces the will of the Thalmor! Against its own people! So rise up! Rise up, children of the empire! Rise up, Stormcloaks! Embrace the word of mighty Talos, he who is both man and Divine! For we are the children of man! And we shall inherit both the heavens and the earth! And we, not the Elves or their toadies, will rule Skyrim! Forever!!!

Completely 100% agree with this bethesda you need to think before you leap off that cliff and stop releasing a game till it's been completely tested [censored] the release dates and delay the game till it's completely done. Seriously 6-7 years ago if you did this you would of been a failed company patchs did exist you would look at everything before you released it and now you just release a half made game then just fix it after the release date. and like the OP said if 1.4 does not fix anything I will drop skyrim and never look back and it will be sad cause I was raised on elder scrolls and fallout.

I completely agree. I've already started looking at titles like Kingdoms of Amalur and Dragon's Dogma to satisfy my
craving for a working RPG. Skyrim has yet to be this. All I want to do is play my game in peace.

Great post, well done. I cannot believe what a horror-show the PS3 side of the forum is. Playstation owners should start their own Occupy Bethesda.

@Lunkan81>>

I think that a very nice extrapolation of how everyone feels Lunkan81 and I am sure everyone appreciates it, even Bethesda. Alot of new ideas go into games and Bethesda's games have always been relatively huge, absorbing experiences. Sometimes new ideas just don't fit with old technologies. I loved Rage so Skyrim was on my list and I also loved Oblivion GOTY ed. All other TES games are on PC. I too have money and spend alot on my gaming and like you that means I don't like to waste it either. So far I have enjoyed Skyrim and other games are comming out or have become cheaper so I get them too. I'm not into angry retorts over a game either, I would just walk away without a word I am not the vengeful type over these issues and see no need to wax lyrical about it. That doesn't mean I can't understand why others would.

Well put, and good english skills too. I'll support OP, and hope others do as well to keep thi thread near the top of the forums. It should stay there as long as we can keep it there til Bethesda reads it.
I'm hoping 1.4 will make the game playable into the end game, rendering it worthy of GOTY. You see, I can get about half way through then bugs, save file size, bad scripting, framerate stability, and other oddities begin to kreep in. If second half of the experience would be better then I'd be very content.
I will say though I might be very lucky withOblivian(including dlc) and Fallout series, cause I've been playing through both 3, and NV relatively problem free. New Vegas has a mutch lower FPS, but it all works for me. I have all the DLC for both too.
Anyway, I hope others sign in and support this thread. The OP has appropriately said what we all have been through.

This just fantastic. It is EXACTLY how I feel. The game was so fun for me the first few weeks. I was in love. And now I hardly touch it. I haven't finished it because of all the crashing and glitching.

I've been watching the forums for moderator updates, but all I ever see is another locked down thread. Those are the only responses they seem to have time for.

I am quite interested to see if they fix it. I really hope they don't think no one has noticed outside PS3 users. I have seen a lot of news on how horrifically broken this game is on PS3. One place named it game of the year, with one caveat, it did not include the PS3 version. Game Informer magazine called all the problems one of the top 10 disappointments of the year. I really hope they don't think they can get away with it. I wouldn't be so scathing if they hadn't pulled this in the past. Honestly, 3 games in a row?
