If you can find a copy try and pick up http://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/Xenology.html. It's an excellent book, wonderfully illustrated and written, and when they aren't dissecting the major races of the WH40K universe (and a few more random aliens) they're delving into their lore and artifacts. It's a shame GW isn't still producing this as it's one of the best books they've made.

Yes, play the pencil and paper. Not the miniatures. I like the Necrons, the old ones. Not these new space ghost hippy ones who want to gt all groovy with their souls and want to make peace with the Imperium when they can. If that isn't a choice than Tau. Imperial Guard are runner up favorites. Coming in third place is the Eldar.

There actually is an existing warhammer 40k thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1178351-warhammer-40000-part-2/
I'm a warhammer fantasy guy, but I've been thinking about starting a 40k army, I've played Warhammer 40k with my friends a long time ago, and I pay attention to the news. I love the lore as well.

I also recently bought Dawn of War II Gold Edition! I've been enjoying the campaign a lot, :D

I also enjoy the books! Although, I don't find them that well written... I find the authors just have parties with adjectives and call it a day. I think its just the universe that really does it more me. In difference, the rule book I have for the 40k tabletop game, the lore written in there I find great

On that note, I love the 40k universe, :D

I especially like the Warp, and the Chaos

Don't play the games but I love getting into the lore! My favorite faction is the Empire and as you can see, White Scars have a special place in my mind, while the Grey Knights are close second.
On the other hand, I think the Imperial Guard is massively unappreciated.

You heard me, the empire is full of uncool weak racist humans, the only cool ones are the Space Wolves, and maybe the Salamanders.

Well, then why does Chaos utilize these same humans as it's prime forces? Because without those traitorous heretics, Chaos couldn't even stand up to the Tau. Besides, the Chaos gods (excluding Tzeentch) are totally shallow, 2D beings that can portray only a single aspect of a mind of a sentinent being. Sure Chaos has a few ultra-powerful, big-boss demons but they don't stand a chance to the brave, endless onslaught of the Guardsmen (much less the Adeptus Astartes). Repent while you still can heretic!

Joke is on you, I'm a Tzeentch person, and some of the demons are actually quite powerful.

I just said they are but what are they worth against billions of fanatical trained soldiers prepared to die for their Emperor? This is not even counting adeptus mechanicus, space marines, inquisitors, and a bunch of others who fight for the Imperium. Also, it's nice to see your a Tzeentch person, wouldn't be much use talking to someone who's catchphrase is "blood for the blood god" eh?

I have the entire series of Liber Chaotica. May not be 40K related, in large part and a bit out of date, but it's a great read for those with Chaos inclinations.

Also, Nurgle and Khorne are the best.

Oh I love 40k. For anyone interested in the books, if you haven't read them yet you should really try the Horus Heresy series, it's fantastic. There's only two really crappy books (Deliverance Lost and Descent of Angels, that last one was so incredibly bad that it still haunts my nightmares), the quality of the rest of the series varies between good and amazing. Especially the stuff written by Graham McNeill and Dan Abnett is guaranteed gold material. I think A Thousand Sons is my favourite, but I'm not sure. The Outcast Dead was really great as well, and so are the first three books, which tie in together a lot more closely than the rest of the series. Actually it's more like one really big book by three different authors (which sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it is some of the best material in the HH books).

I'm a big fan of most Astartes legions, including a bunch of the Traitor Legions. Especially the Space Wolves, World Eaters and Thousand Sons. I really like the White Scars, Night Lords and Raven Guards as well (despite Deliverance Lost).

Here's my god list. (chaos)
Tzeentch
Khorne
Nurgle
Slaanesh.
I would put Gork and Mork above both Nurgle and Slaanesh.
One of the things I like about the Warhammer universe is how similar they are (from fantasy to 40k), both have human empires, chaos armies, orcs, some undead guys (if we count the necrons as these), also the dieties are pretty much the same. Well the Imperium worships a different emperor god, and the god emperor (Sigmar) in Warhammer fantasy isn't half-dead-ish in some chair.

Well, the empire only has Sigmar as the official religion. There are plenty of other deities that are allowable, depending on the location.

True, but as i said they are similar. You don't find something similar to the Dwarfs or skaven in 40k, just like I haven't found anything that feels similar to the Tau in warhammer fantasy. You also have Eldar and Dark eldar, which in my opinion are sci-fi elvesm they even have Khaine as a diety.

My son is making a Trygon at the moment. Woah, they really are the stuff of nightmares. As for myself, Adepta Sorotitas. Armoured with faith, armed with hatred and prejudice.

@Emberoth, the original game had Squats, short heavy humans from large worlds near the centre of the galaxy, basically space Dwarves.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/17109075/images/1323056996150.png, all just to get a really kewl demon sword. A lot of Ward's stuff constantly has them getting bashed over the head, which is annoying, along with being screwed over in everyone else's fluff on a daily basis.

Says '403 forbidden' for me, just like every search one would make on a 40K cogitator.

well, it's a picture of a grey knight wearing a SoB's head as a hat. It's in reference to that one bit in the Grey Knight codex, where the grey knights slaughtered an entire convent of SoB and smeared their blood all over their armor, and kill everyone on the planet, so they can grab and use this highly corrupting demonic sword.

My favourite Adeptus Astartes chapter is the Dark Angels, mainly because they were the first army I collected, they have a certain mysterious quality you don't find with the other chapters.
