Fallout: New Vegas Official Thread #11

To each his own, but the general reviews/ratings are on my side with respect to both NWN1 and NW2 comparatively.

Interesting seeing as how most reviews I've read (and most fan opinions I've seen) have shown a preference for the NWN 2 OC. If you're talking about the game in general than yes (although from what I hear NWN 2 uses a better rule set) some do prefer NWN 1, but as far as campaigns ago NWN 2 has more support from both critics and players.

I'm not too concerned about New Vegas.

Actually on average, NWN1 had a better overall rating, and won far more *major* awards (e.g. RPG of the year from IGN and other places etc). I'm not sure what spurious data led you to the erroneous conclusion that NWN2 was somehow ever rated better, but I assure you NWN1 garnered a better overall rating (by a full 10 points on Metacritc for professional review sites, and users universally rated NWN1 like 7.8 vs an abysmal 5.2 for the sequel.). If you look at the reasons I listed you'd understand why. I'm not making this stuff up, literally NWN2's multiplayer was DOA, Kaput - Ironic considering it was supposed to be a "D&D" game (community play run by dungeon masters).

Seriously what are you going on about? I never said that Neverwinter Nights 2 was "rated" higher, ever.

Either way it doesn't matter as New Vegas is using the Fallout 3 engine, so I don't really see why you're so concerned.

I loved MoTB tonnes more than anything NWN 1 had to offer. I don't see anything NWN OC had that wasn't high quality than what NWN 2 OC did either. I know because I'm in the middle of replaying NWN 1 OC again for the hell of it.

NWN2 was built on the NWN1 engine, and look what happened. Look, I'll cede that Obsidian may get it right with New Vegas, it's not like I have any choice, and I did like what they did with KOTOR2, but don't try to sell me on NWN2. That game was a total dud, and as far as I'm concerned Obsidian needs to redeem themselves with me. I don't care if everyone else is blindly adherent to whoever is on the job, I'm scrutinizing their work on Fallout.

Well, if you're going to be so negatively predisposed you're probably not going to like it anyway
You will just be looking for faults to justify your disapproval - and it's not likely to not find any... these are complicated games.
(for the record: I was very positively predisposed about FO3 when I learned that Bethesda was making it, so don't try turning that one on me  So much so that when I went to buy my new laptop a few months back I asked specifically for one that could play FO3 comfortably!)

+ 'redeem themselves' to you? I don't expect they'll lose much sleep over that.

I'm not looking for a disaster, trust me. I don't resent them enough to forget what it is I'm in this for- fun. I'll be approaching New Vegas as objective as possible (unavoidable personal standards notwithstanding) Genuinely, if these guys deliver the goods, I'll ooze adulation, and eat crow if so required. I want a good game. That's all. After what happened with NWN, I've been traumatized. Appreciate that's where I'm coming from and you'll get an idea. Ironically, like you, I actually bought a new PC, largely to run the NWN sequel. After spending the two years prior immersed in the original, you can understand how much of a let down it was when I didn't even want to play the sequel after a month of trying to let it grow on me. I'd love for Obsidian to prove me wrong, because that would mean I'd get to play a great game.
