It's late and people are asleep, and in the morning I'll probably forget to listen to that, but nice try
Oh ok then, if you do remember to try them I think they will be worth your time especially Artillery

And Metallica have always svcked.

I agree with Dr. Evil.
Because http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfg0_FbIqqw&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX1P3F_EyYQ&feature=related are more badass than half the stuff some people listed that was supposed to be "black metal". At least they don't have weak synthesizers in it. AJfA was made with real guitars (and good tone), intricate drums (because James probably played them on record) and some of the best gravelly tone metal vocals in Heavy Metal/Thrash history. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, of course.

If it's not Tom Waits it's not gravelly.

So I've noticed.
Loads, depends on what you want actually. Gris, Sombres Forêts, Woods of desolation, Austere...
You always had a lot of good suggestions, so I'll check these out.
I think this is the 104829th time I've mentioned him (apologies), but check out Murmuure.. Sounds like it's probably exactly what you're looking for.. If you don't already know him
I think it might actually be the 104830th time. :P
I've listened to most of the tracks you've posted on this one and enjoyed them all.

Amon Amarth? Nice choice. I just realized I haven't listened to them nearly as much as I should. "The Pursuit of Vikings" makes me want to smash skulls in with a 2-handed sword. Not sure if that's a good thing, but I like it.

I don't play team sports anymore since getting out of the military, but I try to hit the gym regularly to stay in shape and I used to listen to alot of what I'd call either angry thrash (Metallica "And Justice For All...") or darker power Metal, sludge or heavy-doomy metal (Morbid Angel, Entombed, Cannibal Corpse, old Sepultura) to really get that ugly, brutal intensity going.

Now, I find that sometimes it's a little too much and I am more likely to use bad form and potentially get an injury lifting to that kind of stuff. Now it's usually more progressive stuff like Mastodon that doesn't make me want to break something so much but still has intensity and has alot going on in the tonal harmony and melodies and the drums especially that somehow helps me focus on precision and form in my workout. I've always found it fascinating how music can be used to tap into different parts of your psyche if you figure out what bands or music triggers or enhances different emotional states or even states of consciousness.

Thanks for mentioning Amon Amarth. I'm coming back from a long layoff from the gym (too long) and I'll have to get some more AA to bring with me when I work out next time and see if I can listen to it without wanting to throw a dumbell through the gym mirror. Maybe I can listen to it at the end of my routine when I am running out of energy.

Speaking of "hipster metal", anyone listen to "Melvins"? I don't know if they would be considered "too grunge" for this thread, but there is a very sludge metal sound in stuff like this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwSOrd4E7yw

Metal is man's best workout music. I have not gotten to the point of not being able to listen to heavy stuff because it would just make me go too nuts though. :P But yes, Amon Amarth is essential for any type of workout.

I was looking through old forum postings of mine when Amon Amarth was new to me, and cringing at how I worshipped them. Now, Im not saying they are bad nor am I pointing the finger of bad taste at anyone who likes them. But nowadays I can hardly stomach anything they've made past the first few albums. Sure, theres an occasional standout tune on each release, and Pursuit of Vikings is one of their best songs ever, and a true metal classic in my book. Still. Amon Amarth is overall, weak and full of filler.

This one still remains a personal favorite and I never skip it when it comes up on my random playlist like I do the vast majority of AA:

Oh really? Thanks for the appreciation.
If you're done with that there's always stuff like Altar of Plagues, Finnr's Cane and Heretoir. And the Deafheaven that has been mentioned is also quite dreamy, although not necessarily to the suicidal point.
But in my opinion Amesoeurs is some of the best moody stuff to listen to. That side project of Alcest's Neige and Les Discrets' Fursy if you know/remember them? Oh, there I mentioned it: try Les Discrets. They're like an even more artistic version of Alcest.
To continue Neige's stuff: Lantl?s is absolutely recommendable. Great black metal with experimental stuff taking you everywhere.
It may sound obvious to some, but Drudkh and Hate Forest pull off atmosphere and in the former case a feeling of depression as well.
Forgotten Tomb is also very suicidal. And Cheerful Depression.
Fen is a weird combination of shoegaze and pagan black metal. Very atmospheric. In the same vein: Wodensthrone, Winterfylleth, all English bands.
Nortt for some black/doom, Sort Vokter if it may get really weird. Strid are DSBM pioneers. Then there's Urfaust and they sound absolutely insane.
So, I hope that will be as appropriate for you. Feel free to ask me about stuff I mentioned and that may be absolutely new to you.
I've mentioned most of these and other bands about two or three, perhaps four threads ago in one of the last posts. If you care, try to find it in my content.

I have to agree that Finnish metal is awesome.

A certain breed of black metallers (Amesoeurs and friends type fans) might be interested in this youtuber's uploads. I've been skimmin through them and finding some pretty snazzy stuff.

Here's a band called http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppmVvQk-eik&feature=related

There's also stuff like Grey Waters and Joyless now I think of it. I recall a band called Self-Inflicted Violence. I should start writing them down myself.

Because I wasn't in the mood for it since I wanted death/doom. Speaking about doom, I've purchased Thorr's Hammer's Dommedagsnatt and Reverend Bizarre's Crush the Insects next to some Sepultura and Sólstafir albums I didn't own.

I don't usually listen to much of the "chick" metal stuff, but damn Runhild's vox sound more ballsy than alot of dudes in metal these days.

I like when the guitars fade toward the end of Dommedagsnatt and it sounds like you are right there in the room with her. Very intimate song outro.

Been talking to a friend today about doom and he mentioned an album (death/doom) I should check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBR-9QlPI6s&feature=related and [censored] the riffs are quality. I might have to add this to my list of things to get this month and as you saw it is a long list already :hehe:

I reckon a bunch would find that nice.
This is indeed very different from the average band with female members. It's simply some of the most brutal death/doom I've ever encountered.

No I haven't. Whoa, what is that... Very sick indeed. Those synths... Thanks for sharing.

Must make an attempt to change that

Whaddya know, I did listen to them in the end. Artillery was good, I guess, but I just really couldn't see myself listening to it. I still like all the thrash I was listening to back when I actually was into thrash, but I think even that is possibly only for nostalgic value... Pariah was a little better - the intro was wicked - but still with the same caveat. Sorry, I doubt you'll convert me :P

Truly horrible, and definitely a band I will follow up.

I need to get me some Reverend Bizarre...

I never was a fan of many female vocalists, mostly because when I think "female vocalist" I think bands like Nightwish and Epica, but just recently I've been finding some really good ones. Both with "extreme metal" and "normal" singing styles...

Wow, and to think I thought my doom metal collection was evil enough already.

Aww man, I don't always go for death/doom but the vocals there are wicked. Reminds me of Hail of Bullets. In fact, is it the guy from Hail of Bullets? Yeah, of course it is. I should have checked Asphyx out earlier... I love how [censored]... crunchy everything sounds.
