The Metal Pony

For all new posters (if there are any) read here regarding the rules:

Spoiler
Hi! Welcome to the new improved Metal Thread. We - the thread regulars - have had a bad reputation in the past due not only to the common perception of Metal music (Its just shouty music for angry people!) but due to the supposed elitist way in which we've treated people wanting to discuss other forms of music. The thread became increasingly problematic recently and the moderators stepped in temporarily closing the thread and consulting with a few of the regulars to get some clearer, fairer rules that will hopefully cut down on both inflammatory and chatty behaviour in the Thread. We're not nasty people, and though the way we treat newcomers and even each other can seem mean, its all in good fun in the end.

For those of you who held a negative opinion of the thread in the past, we'd like to start a fresh page and invite you back. The rules are not changing; we never planned to allow the discussion of other forms of music in this thread (for the reason that too generalized a discussion leads to a lack of focus and interesting discussion) but now that they're clearer to both regulars and newcomers we can try to ensure less confusion and hard feelings.

To the regulars, there are a few changes we'll have to make for the thread to continue. Chatty off topic talk will have to be cut down, we'll have to be accommodating to newcomers, and we'll have to stick to the rules when people come into the thread discussing off-topic material; don't flame them, ignore them and report them. These rules are the forum rules as a whole and are non-negotiable with the moderators , so whether we like it or not I'm afraid we have no choice as to whether or not to stick to them.

Finally, for those of you not interested in the music we discuss, its simple, don't post. There is no stipulation in the terms and conditions of the forum that state you should be allowed to post in any thread whether the subject matter interests you or not. If you'd like to learn with an open mind about the music we listen to then by all means ask for recommendations and tell us what you thought of them , there are a couple of regulars in the thread who got into the music through recommendations from others , and I for one have discovered a lot of new music in the past through this thread, but if you still don't like it there are plenty of other threads you might enjoy posting in.

The regulars who contributed to these new rules are Herr Braunstein, MutantPenguin and Waspinator. We're taking some degree of responsibility for enforcing the rules and if you have any questions about them, PM one of us. We'd also like to thank summer and Dogsbody for their help.

I know this was a long post to read, but after a few iterations of the thread we can get rid of this bit at the start at the start once everyone understands the issue with the clarified rules here.

And here, for the rules themselves:

Spoiler
The Metal thread is for discussion of metal. Nu-metal (Slipknot, KoRn, Rage Against the Machine etc.) is not metal. Neither are hardcoe nor metalcore (Atreyu, Killswitch Engage, Norma Jean, Avenged Sevenfold, older Trivium etc.). Industrial bands like Rammstein, NIN, Deathstars and Ministry are off-limits.
Bands that contributed to the rise of Metal but are not Metal themselves (Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple) are also off-limits. Other bands to avoid posting about: Tool, System of a Down, Marilyn Manson.

To avoid confusion and perhaps a more hostile environment, if you're not certain whether a certain band gets the green light or not, you can always PM one of the regulars. If you don't understand why certain music is not metal, then try PMing one of us to ask about that too.
This will avoid what happened a lot of times in the old thread, and avoid clogging up the thread with complaints about the rules. The regulars are a good source of information about the Thread.

What we don't appreciate is people coming into the thread with the intention to cause trouble. Jokes like my favourite kind is aluminium! It's just shouting and loud music and similar will be reported.

Thanks for sticking to these rules!

Perhaps, and maybe I've heard the wrong bands or just don't get it, but mesmerising to me, does not mean to play a simple riff for ten minutes with heavy basslines underneath.
To be fair, doom is more about atmosphere than advanced riffs in my oppinion.

Yeah, and all it takes is one perfectly placed bass fill or a particular alignment of the bass signals to get me into the zone for it :P

This has me rocking my head lazily back and forth immediately.

Om and Sleep are a bit too heavy on the stoner side compared to what I listed, but they're enjoyable. Those songs of about an hour... just whoa, what can I say.

I agree it's rather about atmosphere. The same thing goes for black metal.

Moss and Black Shape of Nexus are... well, slow. :P

All subgenre BS aside, metal for me is Mastodon, Morbid Angel, Acid Bath, Danzig, old Sepultura and old Metallica. And Black Sabbath goes without saying, but deserve mention on my list anyway. Some people may call Mastodon sludge or progressive metal; whatever that's fine with me, but I get bored with trying to fit metal bands into subgenre/labels. If a band is good, they are good.

As you can probably tell, my tastes are very old school and tend toward the Doom Metal side with a bit of Thrash sometimes.

Guess I should also add Manowar, since I was big into them in high school and still like to listen to them occasionally though I get strange looks from co-workers, etc. if I am singing something like "Valhalla, the Gods await me. Open Wide thy gates, embrace me!"

Old Sepultura? Interesting taste.
Well, really most any Sepultura that still has Max Cavalera. Other vocalist, not so much. There are some good songs on Blood-Rooted. "Procreation of the Wicked" has such a bad-ass sounding powerful Doomish riff, makes me want to hurt/break something.

Anything up to Arise is decent to good stuff with Beneath the Remains being the climix imo. If that isn't too obvious to state. Anything after that doesn't really interest me anymore. Since Cavalera left Sepultura simply no longer exists to me. All ties with their past have been broken anyway. The current band simply besmirches the name.
Ehm, I'm fairly sure Procreation of the Wicked is a Celtic Frost cover by the way.
Brasilian thrash metal used to be so good.

That song rules !!

I remember seeing them a while back and the whole concert was like one giant slow headbang. I wasn't familiar with their stuff and they played for like 5 hours though.... but it was still rad.

Indeed it does. Five hours? I take it that's an exaggeration.
That made me want to create some hair whirlwind myself so I just did to Sepultura's version.
One thing about Celtic Frost though: that moustache looks too funny.

Sure, that's what many say so I won't argue with it. But for someone with a taste for something very different, it comes off as extremely monotonous and tedious. It's like sitting around waiting for that one change in pitch, tone or tempo, that never comes. At least Electric Wizard manages to write some really well written riffs.

Aha! I was sure I knew that name from somewhere. Now I'm gonna listen to Celtic Frost...
EDIT: I'd forgotten how evil that riff and the choir in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U58x3FtAEeI sounded. Totally headbangworthy...

Wow. I never realized that!
Awesome song and cover by Sepultura anyway. I never got into Celtic Frost much, but I saw them once live and they were good. I think I will check out more of their music when I get the chance. I am always looking for new music (or stuff I haven't heard) but for the most part, alot of new music svcks, so I rarely check out new bands anymore. Mastodon is probably the newest Metal band that I have gotten into recently.

Morbid Angel I got to see them play live, thrash around in the mosh pit and meet the guys in the band and got them to sign my copy of Blessed Are The Sick. I am not really into the whole "hail Satan" thing, but Morbid Angel is one of my all time favorite death metal bands.

Sounds more like you are talking about drone rather than doom, but you are probably just exaggerating.

Yeah drone is awful. More specfically, Sunn 0))) are awful. I can at least appreciate what Earth are trying to do.

Behind the scenes for Sunn 0))) just seems to be Greg Anderson rubbing his hands together and laughing like a madman.

Someone at guitar center tried to turn me onto Sunn and Earth when I mentioned that I liked Doom. Some of the stuff I listened to wasn't too bad, but I guess I just tend to like heavier stuff. Then again, I'll listen to King Crimson when I'm in the mood and my metal friends give me that "what are you listening to???" look and I'm just like, "hey man, I know it sounds weird at first, but it kinda grows on you." I guess it's just musically and tonally interesting to me; I don't really care so much if it "sounds like metal", if that makes sense.

I like Sunn o))) and drone in general. Their collaboration with Boris is just really really REALLY AWESOME. However I can see why one wouldn't like their other stuff.

There's definitely a lot of bands out there that play in an old school style. The only thing I don't quite miss is glam metal. The only modern band I'm aware of, svcks imo: Steel Panther.
Other than for comical value, too much Satan and 666 in a song kill it for me as well. You should read the lyrics of Dark Funeral for instance. That's so overdone it becomes first rate comedy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBP8imm03Mo sounds brutal as heck, but to be honest, the 'singing' sounds like someone garglin. My friend tells me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVos-yHmcgs is insanely complex and hard to play, I don't know what to make of it.
