Do you have a bushy beard or a weird mustache? Are you pretentious? Do you reject bands based on how well known they are, without ever listening to them?

If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, I have bad news for you.

You're a metalhead?

Does anyone here play sports? I play Lacrosse, recreation-ally now because I can't play on my high school team any longer. But I find listening to Amon Amarth is the best band to listen to before a lax sesh. Anyone else listen to certain bands for certain events per se?
Amon Amarth? Nice choice. I just realized I haven't listened to them nearly as much as I should. "The Pursuit of Vikings" makes me want to smash skulls in with a 2-handed sword. Not sure if that's a good thing, but I like it.

I don't play team sports anymore since getting out of the military, but I try to hit the gym regularly to stay in shape and I used to listen to alot of what I'd call either angry thrash (Metallica "And Justice For All...") or darker power Metal, sludge or heavy-doomy metal (Morbid Angel, Entombed, Cannibal Corpse, old Sepultura) to really get that ugly, brutal intensity going.

Now, I find that sometimes it's a little too much and I am more likely to use bad form and potentially get an injury lifting to that kind of stuff. Now it's usually more progressive stuff like Mastodon that doesn't make me want to break something so much but still has intensity and has alot going on in the tonal harmony and melodies and the drums especially that somehow helps me focus on precision and form in my workout. I've always found it fascinating how music can be used to tap into different parts of your psyche if you figure out what bands or music triggers or enhances different emotional states or even states of consciousness.

Thanks for mentioning Amon Amarth. I'm coming back from a long layoff from the gym (too long) and I'll have to get some more AA to bring with me when I work out next time and see if I can listen to it without wanting to throw a dumbell through the gym mirror. Maybe I can listen to it at the end of my routine when I am running out of energy.

Speaking of "hipster metal", anyone listen to "Melvins"? I don't know if they would be considered "too grunge" for this thread, but there is a very sludge metal sound in stuff like this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwSOrd4E7yw

On the subject of the Melvins, does everyone know about the free EP they just released? It's pretty good I think. As for their other stuff, I've only heard Houdini...

Do you have a knee jerk reaction to lash out at anyone who mentions the word hipster? Do you have a bushy beard or a weird mustache? Do you wear old man hats? Are you pretentious? Are you an activist? Do you reject bands based on how well known they are, without ever listening to them?

If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, I have bad news for you.

Heck no to all of these!

Some good melodic death: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPnyY1A9gjI

In Flames is one of the best melodic death metal bands I've heard.

But to each his own. I like melodeath because the riffs can be quite complex and sound beautiful but powerful... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc4WFzl-6Xs is like that, for example. :p

Anyone into folk/viking metal?

Been rocking this song ever since I found it on the CD of Rust in Peace I bought. It's a shame it's so short :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G785yHRBWyQ

Yes, I spent a chunk of my teen years listening to Manowar and playing D&D. I have to be in the mood for Manowar these days, but "The Triumph of Steel" is still holds a sacred place as one of my all time favorite albums. "Into Glory Ride" and "Fighting the World" are great too.

Wintersun, aside from the death growl voice, the cleaner vocalist reminds me of Manowar's at times. Musically, it's not bad, but I'm not really into the "Dragonforce"-like speed-synthesizer melodic metal or whatever sound that's called. There are moments that Wintersun reminds me of Manowar-inspired Death Metal, and that I could probably get into, apart from the rest of the major-scale sounding synth stuff. I'm just not a big fan of the "happier-sounding" fast, melodic metal that uses alot of synthesizer. Maybe on like the happiest day of my life, like when a child is born or something, I could celebrate with music that sounds like that while drinking a few mugs of Guinness stout.

So? Gotta be allowed to have personal preference in music. Or maybe the person in question just like the lyrics.

Your point?

I know it's fashionable to hate on old Met' these days, but sorry, I grew up listening to them. The Black album may not be the most popular among the haters, but it caused Heavy Metal to achieve a level of critical reception that it hadn't before. There were a bunch of kids in my classes at the time that were suddenly into Metallica and they were like "oh cool, now I get why you were always wearing Metallica t-shirts and singing stuff like 'Harvester of Sorrow' and 'Master of Puppets'" I grew up in a small town and didn't have the "luxury" of access to any kind of underground metal scene. Being one of the few headbangers/metalheads at my school - Black Sabbath, early Metallica, Misfits, Danzig, Manowar and stuff like that was about as underground or "hardcoe" as it got for awhile... at least until my late teens and college when I discovered stuff like Sepultura and Morbid Angel, Entombed, Golgotha and Acid Bath.

[Edit] (Not to mention when I got recruited into a college friend's New Orleans Death Groove/Grindcore Sludge Metal band - then I was exposed to more stuff like Cannibal Corpse and Soilent Green and Gwar.) "Yeah, I know Gwar."

Yes, I just liked the lyrics and I figured the lycanthropy theme fit in with the Skyrim werewolf quest stuff that I was playing through at the time.

Wasn't sure if you were serious or joking anyway.

Thanks. That's retty cool. I prefer a little bit more of a raw guitar sound, more distinct bass (maybe with a little sludge 'dirt' in it) and I'm not a huge fan of the verse vocals, but I do kinda like the "viking choir"-style chorus. Cool cover, anyway.

So, um. Metal. Yeah. Metal.

Haven't been here in a while.

Anyone have any good black metal (especially the depressing, moody, atmospheric type.. and this new stuff, too, the hipster stuff or whatever)?

Imperium Dekadenz

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1zXMjtE_Z8&feature=related

Armagedda (not exactly the best, most original bm band ever but I like them well enough that Ive finally gotten around to trying one of their other albums. Hope its as good as this one):

This song appeals to me, even though its kinda sloppy and basic. Nice rock n roll vibe to it...

black metal? You mean the "burning down hundreds-year old churches and killing each other's lead vocalist black metal?" Don't know many of those, but how about some New Orleans based "blackened metal" like Goat[censored]?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLFtQ90H6O4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uCz_qfFbrU

Oops, didn't even think about the censors on the band name. I always thought Sammy should have picked a band name that was less explicit, but well, it has an in-your-face quality that he likes, I guess.

Non-hipster black metal generally refers to National Socialists, church-burners, murderers, etc. You pretty much have to accept that you're going to be listening some really stupid, awful people who support the worst kinds of ideologies if you're going to get into black metal.

Anyway, I'd recommend Xasthur, Sapthuran. and Weakling for some moodier stuff. You can see I'm not exactly up to date on what's Grimm and Kvlt these days, it's been a while...
