PS3 Release for Dawnguard - Thread #15

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 5:40 am

Having kept up on these threads and periodically posted myself, this is a hard nut to crack. On one hand I would have expected DG to be out before (or at least beside the Xbox release of) HF. On the other I feel I understand the situation (PR and business theories aside). When working in an office and one team encounters an issue, the entire staff does not cease their own work and zero in on the single issue (unless it is potentially business-ending). In this, I understand the statement about several teams working on different things. I also understand the thoughts concerning multi-platform releases if a company cannot perform adequetely with a particular system.

I originally bought an Xbox purely for the release of Oblivion. There weren't any platform exclusives I had a bead on and so the choice was based on my love of TES games. I was lucky. I never suffered the RROD and even when I gave the system to my ex's kids it still worked fine. Later I bought a PS3. I loved it more than the Xbox for several reasons: the controller was more comfortable (and no battery pack), free internet, Blu-Ray, it didn't sound like a rocket engine while running a game, etc... Oblivion GOTY came out for it and again, I was blessed (this will be a trend, trust me) and the game ran fine without issues. I got FONV:UE. Ran fine. Skyrim. Ran fine. Every other game. Ran fine. Blessed, I say.

Now I am hesitant to say that DG would most likely run fine on my system, but the dev's are iffy about it on a whole. That's fine. I'd hate for it to come out and ruin my perfectly running Skyrim. However, my only fear would be to lose DG and get HF instead. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the premise to me is about as enticing as mounted combat. Mounted combat, to me, was (and is) useless. Even on my warrior I gave up on mounts when I began playing the game months ago. I even killed Shadowmere because on a fast-travel-spawn it pushed me off a ledge and killed me (more than once). I don't do mounts. I have fast travel (and there was one person who asked "how did you find cities then?" I responded "coaches. They are available in all major cities and are dirt cheap"). Building a house has a kind of "aww. That's nice" feel. And don't get me started on adopting orphans...

In a nut shell I stay on the fence. I do agree that if problems were foreseen (as it seems) when developing/porting it, then keep it to the system of choice. I patiently wait for DG to come out and slightly grumble at the release of HF, but I understand. Hopefully the issues will be resolved soon.

I could take my PS3 version being the worst of the three. What still leaves a bad taste in my mouth was Pete Hines boasting about how the PS3 version was identical to the Xbox one. How he couldn't tell the difference between two running side by side. Complete, unadvlterated lies. My game had severe frame rate drops in the caves underneath Helgen. Within 20 minutes of game time, I was already seeing sub-20 FPS. It was impossible for them not to know how bad the PS3 version was. The problem goes beyond Dawnguard. They said adding new DLC compounds the problem. Even if we get Dawnguard running on PS3, it sounds even less likely that we'd get any other major expansion as well if they need to pull all of the stops to get 1 DLC working.

You have a very good point about this. If it is this much trouble porting ONE DLC, I can imagine some major disappointments on the horizon..

I hope Rohugh doesn't eat faces. That would just be creepy.

I wanted to sound off as another loyal TES fan, who has bought all the games since Morrowwind for multiple platforms, and was one of the many who was in line after midnight on Nov.11th to pick up their pre-order of Skyrim on my relatively new PS3. I've enjoyed the game thoroughly, thankfully encountering few of the glitches I've known to plague all the versions of the game, espeicially the PS3 port (aside from having to reinstall everything other than saves because of the submerged glitch). I patiently waited and hoped for the expansion that I knew would eventually be released, and was excited when Dawngaurd was announced back in late May. In anticipation of its (I thought) inevitable release for PS3, I've left enough on my PSN account to be able to purchase and download it when it became available.

With this latest announcement regarding DG, I begin to wonder if this money should go elsewhere. I've never been as disappointed in Bethesda as I am now, and it's really sad to say that as one who has put hundreds of hours into TES games, as well as Falloit 3 and NV.

Maybe Dawngaurd will come to the PS3 users who have been long awaiting it, maybe not. Regardless, I've lost respect for Bethesda, a company I've gladly given my money to for well over a decade, and faith that any future projects will meet the standards of quality I've come to expect from their games. I'll continue to wait with everyone else in bitter frustration, but I won't get my hopes up,

On a side note, I could play it within a few minutes on my PC no problem. And this has nothing to do with "Down with DG on any other platform!". It has everything to do with pragmatism. I already own the game for PS3. I don't game on my gaming computer anymore and it is primarily used by my wife and sometimes myself for internet work. Sure, I used to game on it but the set-up isn't as comfortable as my PS3 arrangement currently. I most certainly will not purchase a game again I already own to play a DLC (even if I'd have access to mods). I sure as hell will not purchase an Xbox, the game, an Xbox Live membership, and then the DLC just to play. My PS3 works fine and that's the end of it. I do rather feel bad for those that got sick of the wait and traded in their PS3 and/or bought an Xbox because of this whole fiasco. Such a waste of money.

Edit: the funny thing is she is willing to allow me to re-purchase the game and/or an entire new system because she knows I've been wanting DG. She needn't worry though, I'm not THAT crazy
