PS3 Graphics

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 9:46 am

I used to think the game looked really good until I started encountering shadow bugs and low-res textures in many places I visit. It's really put a damper on my enjoyment of the game.

because of its vastness the graphics can't be like battlefield 3 or uncharted 3....sounds logic...isn't..?????

After all...on a battle you don't care particular about the shadows of the opponent...as for the opponent itself.....

To be true the graphics are far superior than other open world game out there.....

That might be the dumbest thing I think I have ever read on the internet.

So explain to me how the xbox has better graphics than the ps3 version?

? I said the opposite.

Draw distance is Xbox problem: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1316173-video-draw-distance-issue/

Most TV's are not RGB FULL capable. As was said, RGB FULL is mostly used for monitors, so use limited 9 times out of 10 for your settings on your ps3. If you know for a fact that your TV supports RGB FULL then by all means, enable it; however, a properly calibrated TV (doesn't necessarily have to be done professionally, you can scoop up a good HD Calibration Disc cheap) set to limited will look identical to a TV that supports FULL RANGE and is also properly calibrated. If you use FULL when your TV clearly does not support it, you will get blown out colours and crushed blacks. To those not into properly calibrated screens this may "look better" but it is definitely not accurate to what was intended visually. All in all it comes down to preference. I used to think VIVID modes and GAME modes on TV's made games look better. Years have passed and my appreciation for trying to attain the most accurate picture have taken over the need to see a cartoonish picture with blown out colour spaces and over sharpened images.

Do yourself a favour and buy a calibration disk like HD ESSENTIALS and give it a shot. The picture will look soft, warm, and not anywhere near as bold/contrasting as you are used to, but I assure you, you get used to it and in time these god awful uncalibrated settings look just fake and disgusting.

Cheers

RGB FULL FOR MONITORS?? its not cause your bravia is bad, it may need a calibration thats all

Yes dude. Without wanting to come across like a ponce I know my stuff. Most tele's are suited for what's called studio limited rgb or rgb 444, projectors are suited for ycbcr444 the PC standard is 'full' rgb. I see a lot of folk who upload videos to youtube using rgb full with their ps3 and the black crush is obvious. Of course it's entirely possible that better, newer tele's are capable of displaying full rgb. :geek:

I've encountered the general upscaling issues, but I don't believe that there is anything native to the game itself that's lowering the texture resolutions and such.

That's probably the same thing as what's happening to me. Were you able to fix it yourself or was it not much of an issue for you?

Was going to say that I think it's unfortunate that sony decided to label the options LIMITED and FULL. It makes it seem to the lay person that if they don't pick FULL, then they are getting the shaft visually. This just isn't the case. It would have been better wording if they were labeled MONITOR and TELEVISION perhaps. Maybe something else entirely but definitely not something polarizing like LIMITED and FULL. Happy to see another enthusiast heheh.

The people who are seeing "poor graphics" compared to the Xbox 360 version ...

(1) haven't set up their PS3 to be on RGB Full and Super White (these two settings can make a huge difference to color contrast)
(2) aren't playing on a good HDTV
(3) are experiencing some glitch with their particular game save, possibly akin to the missing texture issue in the Xbox 360 version
(4) are exaggerating the differences (based on valid comparison videos, the two look almost identical besides lighting and AA differences)

Take your pick.

The graphics look outstanding to me, and in some areas of the game it is on par with some of the best I've seen on the PS3.

In some of the comparison videos I've seen online, the PS3 version did seem washed out compared to the Xbox 360 version, but on my TV it looks splendid and much better than it did in those online videos. I'm guessing the players did not follow rule 1 above.

Those two settings make a huge difference, immediately noticeable from the moment you implement them. Yes, even the PS3 menu screen looks noticeably more vibrant with those on.

Oh ... except for the f-ed up shadows, and occasional pixelated or crappy res objects.

Still, overall it looks incredible, and virtually the same as the Xbox 360 version on a TV screen.

Nonetheless, they should really fix those shadows. Terrible.

A graphics snob myself with the PC I used to have, but I must say for a 5 year old console it doesn't look that bad at all. Pop in a game like deadspace or Uncharted and if you still think it svcks then something is wrong. I have watched other people's black Friday special HDTV's and boy does the picture svck.

IGN says: the graphics are the same as XBOX 360...and he scored the game 9.5-10......

I am okay with that..... :intergalactic:
In other news, actual, in-depth comparisons and not just quick glances or unsupported claims have shown a blur effect (which is not good... textures are less crisp and less detailed) on the PS3 version's textures which are not on the 360's (likely a by-product of certain FXAA settings), and slightly better AA on the 360 version as well as a slightly better draw distance in terms of rendering distant, small details for the 360 version. In addition, the PS3 version, for every PS3 player and regardless of the unplayable eventual stuttering people are noticing, has a far less stable framerate and tends to jump all over the place from 20-30 fps throughout gameplay. while the 360 version retains a more stable, closer-to-30 average fps that never dips below 25. The PS3 version is triple-buffered and outfitted with V-sync so we don't get the screen-tearing one can see on the 360 version, but other than that, our version is inferior. It's not terrible, but it's clearly a game not making full, optimized use of the PS3's hardware and that's before the major gamebreaking issues some people are having appear. They did not optimize it as well as they could have. Still, I'm pleased with it (again, aside from the fps dips, really mostly irritating when trying to enjoy the beauty of the fall forest, and the potential for gradually increasing sluggishness).

The "blur" effect on the PS3 may render the textures less "crisp" aka "jagged", and this, in addition to the better lighting in the PS3 version, in my opinion makes the PS3 version look more natural and realistic. In the Xbox 360 version it can look like you're playing cardboard-cut characters in a cardboard-cut world due to the lack of AA and unnatural contrast. I've noticed the same features on other Xbox 360 games. Some people seem to prefer that more cartoony style, which is fine for them.

I'm not sure about draw distance differences, but I've rarely noticed any issues with that on the PS3 version. If there are differences, then the differences are probably slight, and not something that would be very noticeable without direct comparison and even then, hard scrutiny.

In sum, with the exception of the terrible shadows (which all versions can apparently suffer from), the PS3 version mostly looks excellent (for the PS3) if things have been set up properly and the game isn't experiencing significant graphical glitches.

The 360 has better graphics and there is a simple reason why.

Developers ignore the potential of the ps3.

All multi-plat games are lovingly developed on the 360 then ported haphazardly onto the ps3. The ps3 suffers due to the limitations of the adbox.

The ps3 is the bastard child of this console generation.

I had Skyrim on 360 but I sold my 360 for a PS3 last week.
So I've been playing Skyrim on my new PS3 and the game just looks like crap. Comparing the 360 version to the PS3 version is like comparing Skyrim photos to Oblivion photos (I say photos cause a majority of the screenies we see everywhere are not PS3).

It bothered me so much that I had to calibrate my HDTV, even though it did look totally fine for me when I had my 360 and on the PS3 games I've already played, and the game still looks like crap.
And before anyone asks, yes I have superwhite, full rgb and all that other stuff on. Tried it on and off, and calibrated my tv for both situations.

It bothers me cause when I played on 360, I could clearly see detail in everything and that was running the game off the disc, but on the PS3 it looks like textures aren't loading properly or something and the game looks sorta washed out and muddy, which I'm confused about cause I thought the PS3 is more powerful and hd-friendly than the 360 and for the fact the PS3 Skyrim install is pretty large compared to the 360 install.

But now that I think about it, I think all multiplatform games are like this, like black ops and mw3 for example. My brother was playing black ops on his 360 while i was playing it on my PS3 the other day and his game looked a bit more detailed than mine did, considering he was playing on an SDTV too... ??? O_o

I disagree, I'd say most devs are pretty good at making the PS3 and 360 versions of games as close to equal as they can. Apart from Skyrim, I can't think of any other game released this year that was this significantly worse on PS3 than on 360.

That seems to be a common occurrence with the PS3 version, it's a glitch.

Fail of the year

It's not a fail cause I'm not the fool paying $60 a month for stupid stuff. The only game I really played on 360 was Halo, I have days of playing time invested into that game, and then I realized how much of a lifesvcker the 360 is just b/c of how much of a social platform the console is - like how I bought Gears 3 cause I thought the game would be awesome to play with friends and I ended up not liking the game after about a month and traded it in to gamestop for $30 and my reason was social influences which resulted in a waste of money.
I don't think it's fair for me to pay $60 a year just to play halo online, as I never used that stupid Hulu plus thing, I don't care for a youtube dashboard app...and tv on xbox??? if i want to watch tv, I would watch tv through the service provider I'm paying to give me tv service or watch shows on the internet, who cares if you get DLC before everyone else gets it, cause in reality you're paying for it beforehand to get it early just to pay for it again when it's released...There's so much. Basically the only benefit I received from paying for xbox live was playing halo online and being able to talk to friends in party chat. It ain't worth 60 bucks.

For the love of all things technical...stop setting RGB FULL unless you have a monitor or your TV specifically says it supports it. I'd go as far as to select LIMITED irregardless of capabilities. Learn to calibrate TV's properly before listening to people blowing smoke up your ass.

All due respect, but I thought it was generally regarded that the PS3 version is graphically superior, specifically in texture loading/resolution. When the game was released, the Xbox 360 version was plagued with texture issues related to installing the game on the hard drive. After subsequent patches, it seemed fixed for some folks, not for others. I watched a couple console comparison videos from release and the PS3 version was far and away superior in texture loading/resolution. Why is there no acknowledgment of this?

Also, and maybe this is a bit of an unfair comparison but I mostly play games on PC. I played Oblivion on PC too.
For whatever reason I thought I would get Skyrim for the PS3

If your computer can run Skyrim, even on medium to high settings or whatever, exchange it for the PC version pronto.

You'll save yourself a lot of headaches later on ;)
