PS3 Graphics

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 11:34 am

Hi,

My question is about graphics on PS3. Sorry if this is already a topic somehwere else but I have looked through other posts and the majority seem to be concerned with the lag issues on PS3. I haven't encountered these yet as I am still fairly early in the game. No doubt I will have that pleasure soon!

My issue is the graphics. Are they really that poor or is there some issue on my side? They are blury and very low res. They are not sharp at all. Dungeons in particular are poor. It can be hard to make out any sharp detail unless you are right on top of something. Everything seems just blurry and washed out.

Is this a known issue with the PS3 that Bethesda have acknowledged or are we all getting the run-around?

Maybe I am just looking back with rose tinted glasses but I honestly think Oblivion looked much better. Much much sharper.

Also I can actually see the textures redrawing/rendering as I move. I can see low res textures being replaced as I walk. About 5 metres in front of the player. Especially in third person view.
It actually looks like it is being played in SD instead of HD.
And before anyone asks I am playing this on a 32" HD samsung tv which was only purchased a few months ago. So the issue is not there.

I've seen some screenshots (from PC/360) and the textures are infinitely better. I dont get any shine on walls or any real detail even up close.

What tv settings are you using? make sure to remove any video processing from your tv like jpeg artifact, noise etc as these 2 settings alone if enabled will make your game look blurry as hell.

EDIT -

Also, check ur tv settings (Calibration) try searching the net for a set of settings for gaming, since most stock tv settings are either to vivid or to light.

After i prof. calibrated my tv, skyrim looks awesome apart the low res texture issue there is after patch 1.2

hhmmm. not sure is the honest answer. noob question but can you explain more?
I haven't changed anything on my tv. I just plugged in the PS3 and away i went. Is this a tv setting you are talking about?

I would love if this was the issue!!

by the way. the graphics are fine on other games.

It's well documented that the PS3 version is graphically inferior to the xbox/PC versions.

There are many many many comparisons online...

You may want to dig out the manual to see if the TV has a games mode, some work some don't you can get a lot of setup help and advice on your TV model here:-

it would probably make sense that it is my tv as the quality of the graphics is so poor that I find it hard to believe it was shipped this way.

Just to clarify, the jpeg artifact and noise are TV settings? i.e. there is nothing I can do with PS3/skyrim settings?

Cable wise I am just using the bog standard cable that came with the PS3. Time to replace it??

Same, on mine prior to calibrating my set, some games where fine while others required some tweaking.

Yes the settings i mentioned are tv related, also you are using HDMI?

nope not using hdmi. I honestly hadn't been overly fussy about graphics before. Other games were fine for me. Sharp etc...

Its just that skyrim looked so poor.

Also, and maybe this is a bit of an unfair comparison but I mostly play games on PC. I played Oblivion on PC too.
For whatever reason I thought I would get Skyrim for the PS3

Please show me, most reviews I have seen state they look pretty much the same, the PS3 and Xbox versions that is of course the PC version looks better cranked up to 1920X1080 etc ;) I am running Skyrim on my PS3 through HDMI on a 52 inch Sony Bravia Full HD screen and it really does look fantastic, not just saying that, even in 720P with Skyrim textures on the most part look sharp, colors are bright and the scenery is just breathtaking! Draw distance is amazing and the pop-ins arn't that noticible, this is MY opinion in my circumstances. I found myself just before staring in wonder at the Auroras spreading across the Tundra sky with the wind whistling bye, it truly was magical, probably the most sureal experience of my gaming life... then a wolf had to ruin it by leaping onto my back :(

If someone wants to get nitpicky and compare freeze framed issues then I will bring up an article I read that states that the Xbox loading times are MUCH longer than the PS3's, twice to three times infact.

Its something they expect you to have if you have a HDMI capable TV already, plus it would push up the price! HDMI is the ONLY way to play games AND watch DVD's/Blu-Rays, anything else and your selling yourself and your fancy TV short! Why have Wii graphics when you can enjoy the full spectrum of 1920X1080 goodness? :) Btw don't be ripped of with fancy HDMI cables that cost 100 bucks or whatever they try to rip you off with, you see HDMI is digital, the signal is either ON or OFF, the only thing that may come into the equation is interference protection but most cheaper cables have protection at any rate. I bought a cable from a place up north in Australia that makes them, cost me 25 bucks for a 5M cable, copper shielding included and gold connectors... works fantastically with the PS3 while the store I bought my TV from were trying to push a 120 dollar Belkin 3M HDMI cable onto me insisting it was necessary... money hungry fiends! :(

getting off topic here but the loading times are a bit disappointing on ps3.

although maybe the hdmi cable will fix that too... (being sarcastic there!)

I've been playing on both PS3 and 360 on the same tv with the same settings. Both console versions are the same graphics.

Fatlog, the reason why you are seeing fuzzy textures on the game is due to a antialiasing technique called FXAA which is a low performance cost method of eliminating the jaggies on the objects, items and enviroments edges of the game. By having a low performance usage of the gpu this a common technique that some developers (the lazzy ones) uses to achieve the jaggie free image quality but the bad thing is that it will make all the textures assets more fuzzy and therefore "low resolution", because although it has the same resolution than the 360 version, the artwork will never be as good as the sharpy 360 visuals....
If you search the forums you will be able to see some threads requesting a patch to give us a choise to disable this feature in order to achieve better visuals, but since Bethesda can even adress the top priority issue, the lag, this is will never going to be rectified. So, as the other users are saying, make sure to enable full hdmi range to on and super white to on too, on the display settings of your ps3. And also, sometimes the Ps3 upscalles the game to 1080p if you have that option turned on. I dont have Skyrim so i dont know if this is the case, but you should definetily chech it (if you have a sansumg Tv as do i, you can see the resolution you are outputing by clicking on the INFO button of your tv remote on the game!. if says 1920x1080 you are on 1080 p and you should force ps3 to run as 720p, 1280x720). Again, to change this go to the display settings of the ps3.
Hope this information helps!

My save file is at 10Mb the initial load time is 10 to 20 sec at game start, I had long load times when entering or leaving buildings/dungeons but after unchecking the save on travel box these times tumbled to 3 to 7 sec.

It is funny how we get used to less waiting, some of us would happily sit in fromt of a C64 for 5 min or so waiting for a game to load in off a tape. :D

lol I did the same thing, my Bro has a 360 and Skyrim, he brought it over and we hooked it up through my 52 inch Sony Bravia, we had both versions running and we could NOT tell the difference, the only thing we could point at was the PS3 version seemed a little brighter!
