PS3 lag: explanation and solution

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 11:28 pm

Hi folks,

I haven't purchased a copy of the game for my ps3, much as I would like to play it. Will have to assemble a new PC to play it in the new year.

Meanwhile here's the lowdown on the situation:

- I am a professional software engineer with years of experience, holding several qualifications including a CS degree
- Have worked in the industry for over a decade
- Very familiar with software design, development, and testing practices.

In my experienced opinion,

- Skyrim is broken because it is a bad implementation
- This company knew fully, absolutely, 100% that it was selling you junk. The problem simply wasn't missed in testing. That isn't how it works. These guys know their algorithms. They monitor resource usage as the program runs. They don't have to *see* lag to *know* it's going to lag.
- No amount of fiddling with your console is going to fix the issue. If your car slowed to 5mph every 15 mins of driving, opening the windows or turning the radio off would do nothing.

So don't bother speculating..wait for a patch (I'm skeptical) or demand your money back.

The game looks beautiful - I can't wait to play - but in this case, Bethesda screwed you knowingly, grabbing your money and knowing there was nothing you could do about it. I would bet money on the issue not being fixed, otherwise the product would never had made it out the door in the first place.

They are probably counting on the short attention span of young gamers.

I've said it all along.

If Bethesda can't hire people who can program on the PS3, then don't bother putting out a PS3 version.

Stick with PC/360 and stop pissing people off.

This sounds like it's true from my experience playing this game for nearly a week, ive got 60h played on my 42 character and i testify to the broken game issue i won't go into details. But its still kind of weird to beleive they made an amazing game and then fail making the code [censored] or whatever it sounds kind of weird that they spent alot of interest experience and their brand name on the line aswell to fail on that? that is in nobody's interests i'd say.

Isn't lag from online experience? This is just [censored] frame rate :sadvaultboy:

I'm stuck between feeling like they did an awful job porting it to the PS3, or they did a great job ripping people off.

???

Lag is lag. It has nothing inherent to do with online experiences, it's simply an inability to respond in a timely fashion.

OP, thanks for the insight. I would agree. I fear this is the case and we're stuck with the problem and a complete lack of care from Bethesda, unfortunately.

I always thought Bethesda was an awesome game developer for creating these types of games however I now have lost respect for them because of this game. It seems like they forced a release date on 11/11/11 which is really stupid. Considering how broken the game is, there is no way they didn't see these problems when they were "testing" them. Like you said, these people know what they're doing and know these problems were going to occur yet they still decided to package it and sell the game. People criticized the PS3 earlier on because of delays but those delays just give the devs more time to work on the game and polish it, which obviously Bethesda didnt do. Regardless, i'm still buying the game because I love these types of games but i seriously hope these major bugs/ glitches are going to be patched. I thought bad PS3 ports ended in 2008, guess this doesn't count for Bethesda :(

Worth bearing in mind too that these decisions aren't made by the people who design and implement the software. I'm sure they take great pride in their work. For all anyone knows, the PS3 work could have been outsourced to a third party. In any case, I wouldn't harbor any anger towards the programmers. This situation reeks of middle managers and accountants...the employees who make the business decisions.

Ultimately though, PS3 customers have been deliberately shafted. Perhaps an "occupy bethesda" movement is in order :)

Well... Then I guess we all got ripped off.

Mark my word, unless a serious patch for this comes out, and soon... I am never NEVER buying another product from this company.

I'm going to try to hold back my anger a little longer.

Maybe they just have me fooled, but they're claiming to be fixing this... But boy oh boy if they don't...

If you buy it, buy it used, dont let your hard earned dollars go to a company that releases a game like this. Like you said they knew it was like this and refused to change it, thats a big no no

Well usually when one hears "terrible lag" or something like that, its about something online.
my bad for thinking there was some sort of difference <_< either way it still turns to [censored] at some points

You know... If I had a PC that would run it, I would actually consider this.

I agree with the thread starter. Bethesda are slimy crooks that should be chased out of the industry. It's too bad their games are good but eventually become unplayable.

I cannot beleive the apalogists on here trying to defend this company. They knowingly sold a polished turd and hyped the hell out of it. They have no sense of a decent product, they either under resource or don't know how to cut down for sake of stability. Plenty of game compAnies know how to then why dont they? Your game is broke! Give us our money back you theives! You do not deserve the accolades received for this game.

I seriously can stand these apologist. How blind do you have to be to have such faith in a company that can't put out a single non broke game. Any other industry no matter how good the product and they would be forgotten.

If I had a PC capable of running the game then I would not have bought the broken version. Even though I didn't know it would be when I bought it.. I did not think that companies are allowed to release products that don't work as described.

As I posted in another thread, I'm pretty sure this whole thing is, in the U.S., an illegal, direct violation of consumer product laws as established by the Federal Trade Commission. Therefore, if some gamer actually got up the courage to do so, Bethesda could be validly sued over the issue. Anyway, yeah, selling a broken product is definitely a violation of some federal laws, again at least in the U.S. I'm pretty sure it must be.

Honestly, there should be some sort of legal consequence to doing something like this.

It is essentially stealing.

Edit: I think fraud would be the correct word.

If this product isn't fixed within the week, I'm going to start looking for open class-action cases against gamesas.

First Fallout 3, now Skyrim? Enough is enough.

A buggy PS3 product shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone...let's not forget the Oblivion A-BOMB glitch that was never even addressed by the company..even with the GOTY edition and silver anniversary edition. These editions had the same bug repackaged. Inquiry to Beth support revealed basically that they knew about the problems but never would fix them...

Seeing as there has been no official word from Bethesda on this issue, all we can do is cross our fingers and hope for a PS3 fix.

The game is brilliant in concept, poor in execution. The artists and designers deserve all the credit. The programmers should be looking for work...
