[RELz] Static Mesh Improvement Mod (SMIM)

Post » Thu May 24, 2012 8:03 pm

VRAM is one of the least important apects of performance... I mean, 512mb could hurt purformance, but for the last few years all GPUs tend to be 1gb or greater. DDR3 vs GDDR5 does matter, but the actual size is of minimal concern, especially when you're talking about a guy with a mobile 5730. That card could have 10 gigs of VRAM but it wouldn't help.

To Albinodunmer: you should be fine and can add some higher res textures, it's unlikely you have less than 1gb with a 5000 series. The biggest performance hits for you are shadows and draw distances.

Brumbek, this is my favorite mod in the history of mods. Thank you. I can't believe how crappy the uv mapping can get in this game. Keep up the amazing work! Oh and I agree... wait till you see Windhelm...

Ok, here is what you need to do, go into wherever you have NMM download mods to. There will be an "Install Info" folder. Go into it. Now delete the entire "overwrites" folder. Now download 1.12a of SMIM if you haven't. Activate it. It will work now (hopefully). It is just that NMM is VERY picky, so if one thing goes wrong, it breaks really badly. Hopefully new versions will improve this.
That did it, thanks for figuring it out for me.

Thank you very much! Yes, the low quality work is hard to fathom...maybe it is a cruel joke.

Speaking of bad UV mapping and texturing and SMIM fixes, behold, the http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/images/8655-1-1330743351.jpg for version 1.13. It is so beautiful, I never thought I'd bring something so wonderful into this drab world...

Wonderful cask!

Also, and I just noticed this, the dwemer scrap items are atrociously low-poly. You should fix them :D

Looks great! Skryim 2k HD Texture Pack + This and a few other small mods = amazing looking game. I will say though that re: low res game - I've been playing through The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on my Wii and that game, while it looks amazing for a Wii game makes vanilla Skyrim look HD. Seriously, I can't help but notice how everything in the distance is so BLURRY. I can't wait to get a HD Zelda when Nintendo releases the Wii-U.

Thanks man. Good to know. I play with shadows at low anyways. If they look crappy on ultra then I really do not mind the slightly crappier low setting. Def worth the performance boost!

I've come to report a mesh inconsistency in *gasp* the Farmhouse interior meshes!

Please give me the name of the interior cell you are in. Thanks.

Version 1.13 out since a few people wanted the new stuff and just couldn't wait.
  • SMIMified the three http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/images/8655-1-1330743351.jpgto make them beautiful. No more totally blurry, misaligned textures!
  • Fixed UV errors in wrterwind01.nif (Whiterun stairs and rocks going up to Castle). Several rocks had really bad errors. Also the walkway trim UV wasn't aligned properly.
  • Fixed Whiterun bridge to not have that weird unlinked chain appearance on the left side. You people who reported this are OCD like me!
  • Fixed one texture to no be "Read Only" which was causing installation issues to do NMM being very, very picky.
  • Renamed .esp to "StaticMeshImprovementMod.esp" since this is the name used on Steam Workshop.

It goes for all Farmhouse tileset based inns, so you can see it in RiverwoodSleepingGiantInn, MorthalMoorsideInn, etc.

The problem mesh in question is FarmIntInnEnd03.

Thanks, yeah, seems they forgot to close that off. Easy fix. Will be there for next version. Good find. Keep up reports like this.

Btw, ppl may have issues installing 1.13 with NMM. I personally did...I don't understand why. NMM is a bit annoying lately with bizarre errors. Maybe my fault, but I don't know.

A user reported BAIN didn't like my format. I take it BAIN is ok with it since you use it? And yeah, NMM has issues, but hopefully over the next months it will improve.

Thanks a lot! I appreciate the nice comments.

To all, I've finished the new Farm Table and benches, used over 200 times or something like that. The original farmhouse table (as seen in many inns) was one of the first ugly meshes I noticed when playing. I couldn't believe the lack of detail. Anyway, http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/images/8655-1-1330762475.jpgto fix it (subtle in the screenshot, much nicer in-game). I'd like to have made it look REALLY nice, but that would require custom textures by me, and I know how much everyone loves their favorite texture replacers, so for now it only looks awesome instead of mind-blowing. :)

I don't want you to go to more trouble than you want to yourself, but I would *love* for you to make custom textures if you think it would make it better. I don't actually use any texture replacers myself aside from the vanilla HD pack and some very specific replacers. So I would definitely appreciate that mind-blowing brumbek touch.

Wow, that was unnecessarily erotic.

I have had no issues installing via BAIN either, and I've pretty much installed then updated with every single version (I think I skipped from 1.10 to 1.12 just due to the quick turn around)

I like the FOMOD install, though. It is very nice and you can see exactly what your choices look like before you install. BAIN can't do this, as far as I know.

Well, you could go to the mod page and look at the screenshots of the different options.

It works fine. The subpackage structure is laid out properly and has no trouble installing. A wizard file for it might improve things though to provide pictures for the various options so people can see them ahead of time, but other than that, no problems.
