[RELz] Static Mesh Improvement Mod (SMIM)

Post » Thu May 24, 2012 10:34 am

I realize some will prefer vanilla. I also accept the vanilla barrels are realistic. I just don't think they look good. I'd rather have slightly less realistic but higher-quality models. Perhaps I'll add a optional "vanilla style" option in the future.

I think the other models look great.
No offense, but I actually meant that I think the vanilla barrels look *better*, as in higher-quality.

Nice, thanks for the better high poly model and uv seams fixes..

The problem is I had to create custom textures for several models. Since these are my textures, no other mods will work with them unless specifically designed for my mod. Hmm...I could release a low (vanilla) resolution texture option, but for now I'm avoiding doing a lot of extra stuff since it just slows me down in actually including new meshes. I'll see what I can do for the next major release.

DDSOpt can batch and scale down I believe..but so can photoshop batch..was going to do that since I only have 3650 with 512vram..

This is one of those typical mods that you didn't knew you needed until someone made it.

It's kind off funny that the UV is so off on many things, like the cabbages for example. As a texturer I must say that is sloppy work.

Thanks Brumbek!

Hm, I like the new ones, esp. the rope. But I guess the vanilla textures already do look nice and a bit more "worn out" - maybe it would help to adjust the new textures a bit towards more faded colors? But that's the decision of the author...

I like the work, good job.

However, I have to ask, will your mod work together with this one? I am at work and can't test it.

Because, between pretty crates and barrels and crates and barrels I can use, I will pick the ones I can use. Unless I can have pretty ones that I can use.

Oh yes, I agree with CCNA I definitely don't want to go back to all those useless barrells and boxes.

I personally hate normal maps. Often you find you have a poor quality texture, and a normal map to make it look better, until you look really close. Oblivion was very guilty of this, Skyrim not so bad, but there are some things I think yuck, that texture looks like something from orignal Doom....

There was an Oblivion armour converted to Morrowind, and it looked terrible (to me), the chest mesh was obviously flat, and the texture had no real shading on it to indicate depth, as the normal map was for that.
Sure, I know MW armour was low poly, but at least that stuff had bumpy bits for key detail areas, combined with shaded textures, gives a pretty good result.
Agreed. Normal maps are used to DEATH. Artists think they can just slap on a normal map baked from a high-res model and call it good. It never works well. You cannot break the fundamental laws of phsyics. A 2D plane CANNOT be 3D. And yes, you're right that the problem with doing really "3D" normal maps is they will look REALLY bad at some angles.

Honestly, I greatly dislike most of the vanilla normal maps with their really blotchy, large style.

Yesh...the default cabbage set me back years of therapy...texture seam right down the middle?! THE HUMANITY!

Yeah, I normally always prefer to stick with the dev's artistic vision. But faded was boring imo. I'll release an alternate version using vanilla textures though, since I realize we each have our own views. Next release.

Yes it works! His mod uses the same static meshes (barrel01 and barrel02). And let me add that I'm also going to update the barrels to make them even better...and more animated...that is all I can say for now.

By pure coincidence, I also am working on a mod to replace those useless statics with true containers (along with sorting out all the boring loot and other bits n bobs). It's supposed to be an open world damnit!

Nice. Well, what I'm doing for next release is making the barrel01 container actually animate and open at the top when you open it. Am I the only player who noticed this is basically the only container in the game without open/close animations?! These barrels are everywhere but don't animate? WHY? Anyway, I'm hoping doing this will be easy...but it might require .esp work...unsure yet.

Great thanks. I will grab that for the new version's modular NMM install.

To all, I got the blasted Wardrobe to work. Turns out you CANNOT have two NiTriShape's with the same txt Name in animation groups...good to know...as to why Skyrim now needs all these txt Names for all .nif parts, who can say.

http://static.skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/images/8655-1-1328934962.jpg. Again, it looks much nicer in-game. The improved shading is hard to see in screenshots. But notice how dark it is in the wardrobe now as opposed to vanilla....like a penguin could jump out at you, a were-penguin.

Slow day today, but I've released 1.03. Has new install script with options. I've added a weathered furniture texture that closely matches vanilla. Plus options for vanilla barrel textures on my new 3D meshes. Oh, and the barrel container now animates...speaking of which, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJhBCDWQFzs.

Oh, I also uploaded a clothing fix requested by a user. This should probably go in the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, but anyway.

So yeah, hopefully I'm done with all this uploading stuff for a bit. I'll start doing new meshes shortly.

Any chance you'll do this for some plants/trees? Some of the worst models are things like the junipers in/around Markarth for example, or the tree in Whiterun.

Looks great so far though.

Mmm, most are good, although I do think that the barrel looked better vanilla

Re-barrels, from pics on op (not seen in-game only found this thread 10 minutes ago and at work, dammit!)
The roped barrel you made is far, FAR superiour and looks utterly brilliant. But, like others have said, the right hand barrel (which looks like a cask really) already looks good in the vanila pic, imho of course. It looks used and rusty and old. Having said that, the lighting looks quite different in the http://static.skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/images/8655-2-1328857447.jpgwhich may account for something
Need to see them in-game really...

As you've made new meshes, am I right in assuming these point to different, specific textures you made, thus other texture replacers won't overwrite them?

Also, you mention 'modular install', so I'm hoping for BAIN archiving yes

Tables look great! Keeping an eye on this.

I'm not sure what your trying to get at with normal maps. Normal maps fake tens of millions of polygons (Well, virtually infinate depending on your map), which you will simply never be able to get in a game, not for a very long time yet. Even Zbrush the premiere app for high poly models cant handle more than a few dozen million, and even that is through some very clever tricks.
Even a model in the hundreds of thousands of polygons could never reach the detail of a good normal map.
I'm just saying because you seem to be saying normal maps are useless, when obviously they are absolutely fundamental. A good normal map is a thing of beauty.

The new glass armour with the HD pack is gorgeous.

Very nice work! Though I agree with one of the early posters about the barrels, but yours still look great. Thank you, this is an instant download for me! :)

I had a quick look in-game earlier and have got to say thet the barrels look just great. The screenie in the op just does not do them justice.
Great work, keep em coming!

Thanks! I love that video too...perhaps I shouldn't be obsessed with my own work, har har.
I'm not sure what your trying to get at with normal maps.
Don't worry, normal maps are useful...but have you ever gone up close to a detailed normal map at an angle of say 45 or less? They lose all 3D effect and actually look worse because your sense of depth goes all wacky when your eyes switch from the faked 3D to the harsh reality of the model. So anyway, there's much better ways to handle things, and I'd like to see more games go that route rather than the 1995 normal map solution. But this is all digression.
Very nice work! Though I agree with one of the early posters about the barrels, but yours still look great. Thank you, this is an instant download for me!
My mod as of version 1.03 has an option for vanilla barrel textures so the barrels look nearly identical to vanilla but get the 3D benefit and open/close animations.
I had a quick look in-game earlier and have got to say thet the barrels look just great. The screenie in the op just does not do them justice.
Great work, keep em coming!
Thanks a lot! Feedback like this helps me continue on...sometimes I wonder why I go to all this effort and think maybe I should just play games and lower my standards, but I must carry on!

Awesome! Thank you VERY much! Makes me realize I need to keep working so I can get this mod to a more complete state.

Speaking of which...1.04 released, added 19 new farmhouse post mesh fixes. I now realize why all the farmhouse posts everywhere look so bad...they only are UVmapped to use about 1/2 to 1/4 of the texture space. It will take some time to fix everything...why...why did the developers have to do this to me!?
