Taverns Are Such A Let Down

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 3:08 am

Remember how it was getting drunk in GTA or in red dead redemption, i was hoping something like that. All so i was expecting that when i sit down i could like order mead and see my character drinking it and getting wasted in the process.

I had high hopes for the taverns and they were one of my most anticipated features especially since the location is Skyrim.

But....they all look the same and all the bards play the same 3 songs.

What happened Beth?

yer they stink, just like my farts. Good modding will fix that I hope.

It would be cool if some of the taverns had some card games.

Maybe that's a bit too Fable for people, I don't know.
Don't forget about the nordic setting. Prostitution and spontaneous brawls for fun are fine, but card games don't really suit nords imho ...

And well, i'm not a fan of minigames either. Never played them in FF. Too boring imo.

That would be cool if you could sit there and play little mini-games with people and they each had different play styles based on their personality. I don't imagine it would be THAT hard. I don't know much about it though. Do they have it set now so that each NPC has their own little AI like in the SIMS for instance? Just to control passive behavior? I haven't played enough to really see.

Taverns have always been dull in TES games.

I hope a few taverns are given the http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7545 treatment.

well he stated the false by saying ALL taverns look the same, when they clearly don't, try go to solitude and windhelm for example, so why you are expecting a positive feddback?

What on Earth gave you the impression I am expecting positive feedback to his post?
Take Christ, Buddha, Martin Luther King , just to name a few. Look at the feedback they got and they were they.
No.
No matter what you post on a public forum you are bound to get at least some negative feedback. It's no big deal.

As for taverns, we're dealing with semantics here. I don't know whether Markath taverns qualify as ?different?. They're not identical, that's for sure, but I wouldn't call them, say, distinctive.

Pistolero... I've never seen such a riled-up post from you.

Same here. Surprising, really.

OT: OP, if you can't handle that the game don't have thousands of NPC, thousands of unique dungeons and thousands of completely unique quests (looking at your other whiny threads), then come back in 40 years.
And bring one of NASAs computers, you'll need it.
The taverns are such a minor thing, and you blow it out of proportions. All the major cities got unique and special taverns with loads of activity, relatively speaking. The villages and smaller cities are more repetitive, but that's nothing you can demand.
True, some games have had better taverns, like both of the Witcher games. But those are much, much, much more linear. I can't believe you proposed an idea yesterday that Beth should remove the open world to make great cities and dungeons.

You use a Morowind avvie (same as me) while Skyrim is 100x times better than it regarding active cities and taverns. TES Forever my ass.

In general, there are too few people in towns. If you walk into a town, you will see a max. of 5-6 people walking around. They feel utterly empty.
I know they did this because they are constrained by consoles. Which is also the reason about the taverns being so dull. They would need dozens of people, drinking, singing, brawling.

More drunken brawls, more tavern designs, and better tavern songs (preferably without huge pauses between verses).

There are a few interesting taverns - Whiterun and Solitude. The rest are generic as heck. Worse than OB in that respect.

Designs are varied enough? They ALL look the SAME.

I disagree, i have a good time drinking with by buddies, hearing "the age of agression". Yesterday I was so drunk i took a job and went into a giant fighting, almost died, luckly i could cast an pacify spell and ran away =x

I feel sorry for you.... Lets share a honningbrew mead? What? You dont like it too? Okay...

There are plenty of unique taverns in the game. There is Candlehearth Hall and the New Gnisis Cornerclub in Windhelm, two more unique ones in Whiterun, also one each in Solitude, Markarth and Riften and in Riften's Ratway.

Its only the village taverns that resemble each other. Of those the one in Falreath always seems to be busy with npcs.

I look at it this way. Sure Vanilla Skyrim is missing allot of stuff, but Bethesda basically gave us one hell of a canvas to work on. In a year or two when I start playing Skyrim again, i'll have Tavern mods, bard mods, dungeon mods, new creature mods, revamped UI mods, new sound and music mods. Basically A whole new Skyrim game.

Can't beat that.

The taverns were a huge let down designed by a bunch of unimaginative keyboard button pushers. You Bethesda should be ashamed, very ashamed. There's the barkeep and one maybe two and if at best maybe three lonely npcs in the tavern sometimes a bard that has the SAME 2 songs? And when the bard is'nt there? What, is the music just some sorta conjuration magic? Where's the wenches? Where's the dart games, or maybe ax tossing at an Argonian not to mention not one mead swilling Nord wanting to "bash my face in" cause my sword is bigger that his. But then again Bethesda of course could of been to busy with the wood chopping and cooking, don't forget the hill billy hand fishing!

One really has to wonder why anyone would spend any time coming to a forum for a game that they despise so much.

Also, I'm sure the developers feel completely ashamed for creating a game that's sold millions of copies and garnered a ton of awards. They should feel terrible.

As someone who has "woken up" in a Skyrim tavern and been unable to remember which city/town/burg the tavern is in until my character steps outside, I would have to agree that many of the taverns are too rubber-stamp. I tend to travel from tavern to tavern, stopping at night. Often, that is where I stop playing for the day, as well, so it might be hours to days before I "wake up". Yeah, the tavern in Solitude is not the tavern in Markarth or Riften, but the tavern in Rorikstead is one of the 'standard footprints' that differs mostly in the placement of chairs and tables. Now, Rorikstead is nothing to write Mom about, so it is rather depressing to step outside and realize that you are there instead of somewhere else. The fact that my character has a hangover does not help.

Maybe there should be a group of mercenaries that travel Skyrim stopping inn to inn, tavern to tavern. Also northern shores can have pirates enter the tavern. As well is that Khajit caravans can enter the city and set up shop at the inn/tavern. If you do a quest for them and the city. If you feel that could liven the places enough then good for you.

That's possible.
Spoiler
During the East Empire Company quest you meet a band of pirates in the Dawnstar Inn.

Cities like Solitude, Whiterun, and Windhelm all have a decent number (and variety) of people in their taverns. Some of the smaller towns and wilderness taverns may not have as many but thats to be expected.

And while these smaller taverns all do look alike in architecture, they do provide some interesting patrons that not only give you a good idea of the surrounding area, but also at times an even more interesting quest (example A Night to Remember).

All in all, im rather satisfied with taverns in Skyrim.
