I could see were you were coming from if this was wolfenstein, but you are guys are complaining over the wolfenstein spoof secret levels which is only 1% of the DOOM game.

It's still a very memorable secret level thats infamous.

Decayed hit this on the head for sure, but the point I wanted to make was that no matter how small. it was still wrong for various reasons

I have to wonder what took more effort: Modifying entire assets of a 19 year old game to appease censorship, or actually making the damn thing playable. The fact that any community has to remind a developer of what they did wrong in time for a patch is rather telling of their overall production values.

So what would happen if we replaced the BFG .wads with the original .wads? Would achievements still work?

it's only Germany. It made business sence for them to make a single sku everybody, which means that single sku has to be sellable in all countries.

Agreed on the business aspect, but i doubt that this self censoring was related to business only.
Found some info on a german anti censorship forum which might interest most of the people here.
A mail answer by John Romero to a question by a german fan why they removed the swastika in Doom 1.
Romero's answer is in the first post in the upper half in english.

http:// forum.blood-is-red.de/viewtopic.php?=3&t=6968

He talks about id here being accused of promoting Naziism.
If it just were the german censors having problems, than Romero wouldn't be bothered about his and id's image, right?

Wolfenstein 3D is often accused of being "played by Nazis" because of the massive usage of Nazi symbolism.
I guess this has to do with it's simple graphics and it's non-realistic pulp story.
It's either walls, swastikas or Adolf's ugly face your looking at and the Nazis have supernatural powers.

Unfortunately, you are wrong. Racism will never go away until the very real biological differences in personality and intelligence between the races (that evolved seperately for tens or hundreds of thousands of years) disappear. For example... every scientific study has shown that Jews are 10 to 15 IQ points smarter than white people, which is why Jews are so much more successful than white people, and why literally half the great scientists in the world are Jewish (eg. Einstein). That's also why less intelligent white people often resent Jews: they don't want to accept that Jews earned their success through higher intelligence. Getting people to understand that is the best way to fight anti-semitism. Stopping people outside Germany from killing Nazis in Computer games (like their ancestors did in real life) doesn't seem like a good idea.

You're mixing up ethnics and religion.
Einstein was definitely white and not black, asian or indian.
In fact, most jews on this planet are white.

Racism will go away when we have a proper level of education worldwide.
Intelligence rarely has anything to do with biology, genetics or religion.
It's based on social environment (family and friends) and mostly education.

We all are born without knowledge.
It's up to society to make sure everyone has access to a decent education.

We all are humans despite different skin pigmentation, hair color or religion.
We are one race.

Appeasing censorship is just low no matter who wants it. Such people or entities get a big fat middle finger from me.

Censorship svcks. No need to discuss this. But in real life, there are always compromises that have to be made.

After doing some research on the ports made of Doom 1/2 and Wolfenstein 3D to other platforms, it's clear that almost all ports including the first one on Atari Jaguar are modified/censored in some way.

Looks like releasing a game to pc is generally easier to achieve without censoring than to consoles.
Console manufacturers seem to be more keen on keeping their games library family compatible.

yes guys, this is a huge deal. let's all be really angry together

look, i understand you all love the originals, i do too. i also understand that willits said they would be untouched, and maybe to his knowledge they were. but this sort of feels like you're grasping at straws

has this even been confirmed by anyone other than the op? even if confirmed, and all of the images of nazi soldiers and crosses on health packs were replaced with other images, so what? i fell in love with the gameplay, not a couple of low res textures

just one opinion

Amen to that.

"Oh no! No nazis in Doom! Doom isnt Doom anymore hur-hur-dur-dur"

Just play the damn game and love it for the awesome game that it is. Show id some understanding and see that there is a freakin' reason behind them editing the game. Now more people around the world can enjoy Doom. Now dont you people think that that is a good thing?

Classics should not be modified to appease a whiny country, countries or organizations, period.

It was the americans that enforced de-nazification of "whiny" Germany after WWII. :deal:
Including the ban of nazi symbolism...

Germans are bewildered why americans often censor primary sixual characteristics in movies and beep out swearing in tv shows...
