The Glory of Two-Handed Weapons

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:54 pm

I've basically always been a Nord 2h user lol. Mixed it up a bit after a while with dual-swords in Skyrim because those used with Elemental Fury is just the most ridiculous combination in any game I've ever played. Ancient Dragons dead in less than half a minute.

At level 51, with very high elemental protection and dragon plate (so the dragon can't hurt me too much) I can hit it with Dragonrend and then kill him with my two-handed Daedric Legendary sword with 43 pts Frost and 43 points shock in just a few swipes. Maybe 15 seconds total. I did it to an Ancient at a dragon lair last night. He was a pretty bronze.

And I'm making progress in Alchemy so my fortify smithing potions are about to get much better which will lead to better improvements on the sword. Eventually I'll be able to beat the Enchanter's Elixers and my enchantments will improve slightly too.

Some people would be bored with this, but I love the optimizing.

Well on this note, I am torn between two builds. A Nord Ranger (warrior type, not sneaky-sneaky) who uses axe and shield for back up...OR a Nord Barbarian with Light armor, 2 handed, Block, Alchemy, and smithing...

Thoughts? Anyone have luck on Master difficulty running with light armor and 2 handers? Maybe restoration instead of alchemy for the insta 250hp heal when near death (sounds like a barbarian second wind to me!).

The two handed weapons are done in a silly OTT hollywood style but I love um. Ah the joy of a mighty swing with my battleaxe to smote down my enemys.

A true Nord wears either light armor or nothing at all and wields a two-handed batle-axe.

I love two handed weapons, but I am saddened by Skyrims crappy system.
I did some testing, counsoled in all the perks for smithing, two handed, and one handed:

A single power attack (hold down only the left mouse button) while dual wielding,
does more damage than a power attack with a two hander.

I tested this with deadric and glass weapons, smithed to legendary (no alchemy or enchanting).

WTF, why can I do more damage (per hit) with a longsword than a greatsword?
The greatsword has more displayed DAM (not to mention being wielded with both hands).

This has nothing to do with DPS, but with per-hit DAM on a power attack.
You don't even want to know how much more DAM the longswords deal on a power attack if I hold down
both mouse buttons at the same time.

What happens if you unequip the off hand weapon and do a power attack with a single longsword? I suspect that damage will be less than a 2H power attack. Even if you are pressing only one mouse button, if you have two swords equiped you are still dual wielding.

The idea is that dual wielding has no defense, so it gets the highest damage. With 2H, your damage may be less than dual wield, but you get block/bash and most of the block perks, like slow time, power bash, block runner, etc. Just the ability to bash alone is huge because you can interrupt power attacks and spells. A dual wielder can never do any of that. You get no defense with dual wield, so it gets more damage than 2H.

The gods gave you two hands. Use them both for your weapon.

But... but.... it's too short for both hands.....

Didn't see any mention of the blitzkrieg charge attack.

My first character was, and is a two hander, and used that perk a lot. Of course, it really doesn't do much more damage than just running up and hitting them. However, it looks really cool the way she hops up in the air, and no one ever has been able to block it, and it makes a really cool sound. Thwunk!!!

Just made another two hander, true Daughter of Skyrim, did Stormcloak, and MQ with Surperior Iron Greatsword and surperior Stormcloak armor. (Her Smithing skill is now 32 at level 22).

She just cured Kodlak and now feels Doomdriven to wield Wuuthrad.

It just feels right to play a Nord in this game....

I love playing a two handed warrior.

I tried to make a sword and board type character but couldn't resist the power of two handed weapons.

Forget their slow, encumbering nature. Forget the vulnerability you feel. The gods gave you two hands. Use them both for your weapon.

Hell yeah. The Longhammer + Elemental Fury Shout. nuff said.

My warrior is a two hand sword marksman. It is good to have archery as opener, kill some foes then charge in with big swings. It is always good feels.

I've always had trouble against dragons with two handed weapons.
My char currently has a two-handed Daedric Warhammer enchanted with +20 fire. My 2h skill is at 90 so damage will increase even further in the future but at this point even blood dragons die within seconds if they land near me. And I'm playing on one level below maximum difficulty. So just keep going, 2h damage will increase to above 150 and even the games bosses will fall to your feet pleeding for mercy.

I just can't play the game without using two handed weapons.

My Mage uses Destruction/Alteration and 2H weapons.

My Warrior uses 2H weapons.

Currently working on a sneak guy. Sneak/Illusion/Alchemy and 2H weapons. You can sneak attack with a 2H weapon! (Its only 2X damage though!)

I do use both hands, in fact it's the reason why you'll be dead on the floor before you even reach me.

I love bows.

Two hands are great, it means my lightning will fry you even faster. Then I will laugh when your greatsword gets stuck in my ebony plate. Finally I'll stab you through the eye with my Imperial Sword. :P

Jokes aside, the Steel/Skyforge Steel Greatsword is the best looking weapon in the game, and playing light armor/two handed is loads of fun, especially with sweeping strikes and deadly reflexes.

I love two-handed weapons with light armor... the Nords have it right

You have the reach and mobility to avoid getting hit.
A crazy powerful sprint hit .
A cleave attack to hit multiple enemies.

You also have the power attack trick... power attack sort of throws you off balance and moves you uncontrollably forward. Use it to your advantage. As soon as you make contact, turn 180 as fast as you can, and your forward momentum will take you away from your enemies.

This sort of fighting is much more fulfilling then others...
