The Glory of Two-Handed Weapons

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:58 pm

I've basically always been a Nord 2h user lol. Mixed it up a bit after a while with dual-swords in Skyrim because those used with Elemental Fury is just the most ridiculous combination in any game I've ever played. Ancient Dragons dead in less than half a minute.

Elemental fury + dual maces = beautifully tenderized dragon steaks for the BBQ.

Did you know that Greatswords and Battleaxes actually swing at exactly the same speed, while Battleaxes do more damage, stagger more, and have a better perk (bleeding)?

(Weapon: relative swing speed)
Dagger: 1.45
Sword: 1.1
War Axe: 1.0
Mace: 0.9
Greatsword: 0.9
Battleaxe: 0.9
Warhammer: 0.8

Also you may find a particularly 'nifty' warhammer in the game if you look hard enough that has the best of everything

well i mostly end up with dual wield or sword'n'board

but i have to say.... i have a character who wears a battle axe.... and it's always a "wow" moment, if you get the chopping-head-off animation! it looks just so brutal, but in some other way also "cool"(because the animation looks so... laid back)

I love two handed weapons, but I am saddened by Skyrims crappy system.
I did some testing, counsoled in all the perks for smithing, two handed, and one handed:

A single power attack (hold down only the left mouse button) while dual wielding,
does more damage than a power attack with a two hander.

I tested this with deadric and glass weapons, smithed to legendary (no alchemy or enchanting).

WTF, why can I do more damage (per hit) with a longsword than a greatsword?
The greatsword has more displayed DAM (not to mention being wielded with both hands).

This has nothing to do with DPS, but with per-hit DAM on a power attack.
You don't even want to know how much more DAM the longswords deal on a power attack if I hold down
both mouse buttons at the same time.

Sadly, I do know, because I have an archery+DW assassin character, and if he flips out (he's...unstable...shall we say) he basically turns into a Cuisinart on crack.

Even so, I prefer 2H weapons because they have one incalculably valuable advantage: they don't get hosed over in the hotkey system when using magic. I cannot count the number of times I grumbled to myself while manually resetting my weapon pair after swapping to a heal or light spell, as doing so would both un-equip and de-favorite the LH weapon. Yeah, it was still on the Favorites list, but effectively it might as well not have been because it wouldn't be acknowledged as such until manually reinstated, and doing so meant reinstating both weapons at once.

Now, I was using a matched set of weapons, which (as it turns out) wasn't helping, but even with different weapons the LH one will still get dropped. Of course, you put a 2H weapon away entirely when swapping to magic, but at least it stays tagged and you can swap back at will.

I've racked up 150+ hours over so many different accounts. I've been playing a character sort of like yours, but with Light Armour and Alteration. It was the first time I've used 2H weapons and, boy, I freaking love them. The weapons actually feel powerful! And when a guard commented that we had two hands and I was smart for using both with my weapon, I felt kinda cool. ^_^'

I always thought that a sneak/archery/dagger in the back style would be me. And it probably still is. But my first (and only, so far) character was a two-handed warrior god. Even at level 38, I still used nothing more than an Ancient Nord Greatsword (fine). And it was good.

I have fun with my two-handed user, except for one MAJOR defensive problem: I cannot block. Technically I can, but it doesn't work at all... The animation takes too long, so that by the time I'm done blocking, my enemy's stabbing me before my weapon's ready to swing again, even after bouncing off of my block. And, it's so fiddly to actually get to work.

I really wish the Left Trigger/Right Mouse Button canceled attacks and drawbacks. Why did they decide a one-handed sword (No Shield) should be more defensively maneuverable than a two-handed sword is beyond me.

And, it slows me down so much that dual-wielders have a defensive advantage over two-handers. That's unacceptable.

Daggers are personal defence weapons for civilians or when your main weapon has been disarmed. Running around fighting dragons and giants with a dagger just looks silly. Call yourself a Dragonborn? Get a real blade.

No, bows are for fighting dragons...daggers are for making corpses out of whiny little warriors parading around with greatswords thinking they have the advantage.

Funny I've not heard of any great legends of a warrior who bested all of his enemies with the mighty dagger. Not heard any tales of dragons being felled by an archer either...

I'll stick with a bow. But if they get two close, out comes the glass 2h sword.

The problem is you're lollygaggin'. I would slay you myself, but that would give the guards cause to haul me to the Dragonsreach dungeon.

You mean like Apollo killing Python with a bow...or Hercules killing Ladon with a bow...or even Bard the Bowman killing Smaug with a bow from the "tale" written by Tolkien?

Maybe you need to clean out your ears since you apparently can't "hear" well... :whistling:

Yeah, two handed is cool.. I started the game as one, but some other issues made me restart. And then i just started experimenting with different things. My newest character is back as a two hander. I think it's the most fun, visceral playstyle. Too bad there aren't many unique swords though.

Well I'm quite sure you've heard of Shadowmere and his bare feet  Anyway let's keep this on topic. I love one-handed.

You forgot the major advantage of two handed there, you can kill your victim and all the witnesses with just one sweep. ;)

two handed swords are so cool. i always carry an ebony greatswort with 1 sec paralyze and an unenchanted one for elemental fury.
also i the like slow time and the disarm perks of the blocking tree.
dont really need them but they make the fights more interesting for me than the stronger but lacking in variety dual wielding.

Ok, as much as I like the topic, I do have a little bone to pick with the originator. How do you make a "Paladin" with a Kajiit? And what Paladin would stoop to using such trickery as the Illusion skill? How's your pickpocket skill now? Got all the Brotherhood quests done?

Bah.

Have you read J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit? Bard took down the dragon, A.K.A.T.O.S.H. (Also Known As The Old Smaug Himself) with an apparently magical (or just very lucky) special Black Arrow.
