The Skyrim Dead Is Dead Thread VI

Post » Sat May 05, 2012 6:20 am

Welcome to the Skyrim Dead Is Dead thread.

It has been a while, since our last mantle. I started this one out with a few random selections of past characters, just to get any newcomers in the flow of things.

*ATTENTION* When posting updates on your character, If it contains information on areas, items, enemies or anything that is beyond general information, wrap those lines in spoiler tags. Do not let this keep you from telling your adventure. It is encouraged for people to post a description of where you are at and what you are doing.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people that contributed to making the DID playstyle a part of the Bethesda Softworks Forums. The initial thread began, and still resides, in the neighboring forum of Fall Out New Vegas. The founder .46ACP (Gunny) who was inspired by Longknife.

For the support of a DID community, I would like to make an Honorable Mention for Sten The Ugly.

The http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1248083-the-dead-is-dead-thread-9/ OP is maintained by Gunny

The http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1250157-the-oblivion-dead-is-dead-thread-ii/ OP is maintained by Se?or Cinco

The http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1244573-the-morrowind-dead-is-dead-thread/ OP is maintained by Murandus

Now for the basics. If you are unfamiliar with, or would like to know more about the DID playstyle. Please visit the http://graveyard.wikia.com/wiki/Dead_is_Dead:_A_gaming_playstyle_choice page, in the http://graveyard.wikia.com/wiki/The_Graveyard_-_A_Dead_Is_Dead_gamplay_site_Wiki.

Just one rule...Dead is Dead.

1) When your character falls in battle or falls from a cliff, that's it. They are dead. Game over. No reloads. Feel free to restart, (
at the cave exit ) with the ole "I or II", after their names. If you so choose.

*Exception*
...If your character falls due to a glitch, the game locks up or due to any outside action and/or distraction ( kids / pets / mother-in-law ) at no fault from the player. No shame will fall upon you to revert to a previous save.

NOTE : Difficulty has no bearing in DID. It should be set, according the comfort of the player. Pending things like character build, roleplay, limits, mods, and experience, this can easily vary among players.

If you want to try a run, feel free to list your new characters, with a backstory if you like. As well as, their starting stats and limitations. Update your progress. Much like the "Where are you now", thread. It's really not any different from most of your guy's/gal's playstyle...aside from the dead and done part.

When and if that happens, post their name, date of passing and any info you want to reflect on their tomb. I will list them in the OP, so they will be forever remembered.

NOTE : You must post notice, of starting a new character, for them to be eligible for the Skyrim Memorial.

Player Tomb Listings :

1) I will list the players in alphabetical order.

2) The graves, of your fallen characters, will be added to your Tomb.

3) Any info on your char will be added, to their grave, according to your post.

4) Each character's grave will be limited, to 7 lines of info, for simplicity and unity. I will be more than happy, to tie a link to your character's name for pics and stats.

5) The Tombs will have a heading, with the players user name.

*NOTICE*
...With regards to the memorial...If you commit to a DID, your character dies and you post " My dude died, on such and such, but I'm going to continue playing him/her", OR you play with a varied version, like restarting from a "half-way point". That is NOT Dead Is Dead and you will NOT get added to the graveyard. This prompted a lot of frowns and nasty comments, in the other forum. So, we can prevent this before it happens.

Thank you for participating and enjoy your game.

I have been testing a slew of mods. I have put together a group of about 25 base mods, that I will be running for all my future characters. These will be supplemented with a few more, pending the character type.

I getting ready to start a new character, just as soon as I come up with a name and personality. I have a general Idea, about a rerun, with my first character, Sonoura. She retired at level 50 something. I will just spin another from her.

Just a recap from the notes in the OP.

1- Feel free to restart at the cave if you so desire. If you want to run that character again, or If on the PC, you just want to use "showracemenu". There is no need to go through the opener every time.

2- Feel free to post all you want about previous fallen characters. This is even encouraged. However, in order to keep the OP from being flooded by children that make up stuff, just to see their character on the list. You must start a new character and present them in the thread, in order for them to be eligible for the CCMS.

Don't feel like I am calling anybody out on this. That rule is not implemented to offend or discourage anyone, but there has to be some type of order, as updating the OP can get absolutely overwhelming. This is obviously an honor system, however it is not fair for it to be abused by people that do not commit to, or even appreciate, the playstyle.

3- THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT! PLEASE USE SPOILER TAGS!

This is http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/560939541775421376/2460ABE4FF128EE7B02FB3BC59A8E48C8391683C/. Thus named because she is my fifteenth character. She is a Sorceress. I will be playing her very strongly in the Conjuration school. Being Altmer, she starts with the Fury spell so, I will play on Illusion as well. I will probably delv into Destruction some. She will be using conjured weapons, if any. She is very frail. I don't know how much abuse she will be able to take. Avoiding combat at all cost is an absolute must.

I have PISE and Deadly Dragons installed. Against my better judgement, I will be playing on master. I will be increasing the damage done by Dragons and enemies. If she ever takes a hit. I'm afraid it will be over.

Having said that, I am considering equipping her with Heavy Armor. I just don't know. She will tell me what she wants to wear. And I don't know if I will stray from the aforementioned skills or not. I see her as an Alchemist, so that may play a strong roll.

No real backstory. I'd like to think of her as being somewhat of a reject, from the Thalmor. She was military project gone wrong. They sent her out to be executed, but that was easier said than done. Making her escape, with the Thalmor hot on her heals, she purposely gets caught up in this raid. Fearing that too much unwanted attention would come from this, the team of executioners can only watch, as she gets carted off by the Imperials.

Arriving in Helgen, the Thalmor thinks that the Imperials will just do their job for them...they are sadly mistaken.

Uruk gro-Ghorak

orc knight

code of malacath- honor, no theft, no unwarranted violence = no sneak attacks, civilized, schooled, distinguished.

heavy armor, smithing (orc and ebony), 1/2-h, block, enchanting, restoration and speech.

i will play on master and exploit helgen and smithing to get to ebony.

Uruk will immediately travel and dwell at the Narzulbur stronghold.

family heirlooms = ebony blade and sparkbolt ring.

Uruk comes from a family of great wealth that has long ties with morrowind and skyrim and, in particular, chief Mauhulakh.

Am running yet another Dead-is-Dead character myself, a female Argonian mage named Vasheera. Her main skills are Conjuration and Destruction, but she uses all five to varying extents. She's a 'pure' mage, who uses neither armor nor weapons, and also doesn't use the '-skin' spells as the constant recast is a real distraction in battle.

Since she's a fairly high level (50) now, her Illusion skills are currently not up to par as she's been neglecting them (which was a mistake) in order to get the main two leveled up as well as Enchanting, Alchemy, and Alteration, however in trade she has Paralyze and high magic resistance. The early levels were rather rough, since she had neither -cost% enchantments nor much in the way of HP, so had to drag fights out until she had enough cost reduction to be able to dual-cast Firebolt.

Getting the Impact perk turned out to be a wise decision, since fights are starting to drag out, but having to fire off a dozen double Firebolts at one target is getting old. She has, however, heard that the mages of the College, in Winterhold, can teach advanced techniques, so hopefully she can obtain some more powerful spells.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

In case you're wondering why she still hasn't been to the College: I decided to try something different this time, and see if it really is vital to get the Expert-level spells in Destruction ASAP. As it turns out, you can get by without them, however boss fights do get progressively more tedious the higher you go if you don't have them. I also deliberately delayed getting some of the better Summons, for similar reasons, but that doesn't work so well due to Fire Atronachs being rather squishy against physical damage, even when perked out.

I'm definitely going to the College sooner on future mages, so that I can use all the money I raise off of Enchanting and Alchemy to train up the schools more evenly in order to have better spells across the board rather than in just a couple of schools. It doesn't help that almost all spells of Adept or higher rank aren't sold by most of the spell vendors, which makes the College the only place you can reliably get them.

This character is a radical departure from my usual tank-style builds, which was the reason I made her in the first place; at high levels the tanks shrug off almost all damage while 1-2 shotting almost everything, whereas this character has to guide the fights in order to avoid being overrun. I also chose not to use Stealth, although I did take the Quiet Casting perk so that I can cast Illusions and Summons without automatically alerting the opposition to my presence. Am rethinking that decision, even though Sneak perks break the game into a million pieces, since some Archer units can see me before I see them and lay out heavy damage.

I've done DiD before and I believe several of my characters have been interred in other threads. But I have a question; is spamming cheating? For example, if I buy X Illusion or Conjuration spell and spam it to 100, is that really in the spirit of DiD?

I'm wondering because I was also thinking of doing a Breton DiD that's strong in Conjuration and Illusion, both of which can be abused. OTOH, DiD is all about the survivability of the character so anything available for use within the game could be perceived as fair. Hmm.,.. I just may go fire that one up right now.

This is something that has interested me for awhile, but I must say I'm rather... "afraid" for lack of a better term... lol because there are some times where I get rocked rather quickly lol.

I may begin a Dead is Dead just for the fun of it, however. It would certainly be a new challenge for me.

I have a question however about what constitutes as a glitch:

-I have died a few times where I try to use a shout / power, what have you, and the game doesn't respond to my command on the controller. Would that count as a "glitch", considering that I was actively doing something that very well could have kept me alive, but the game didn't respond to it, thus me dying outside of my own fault?

Nice timing. Just made a new character so think I'll put him in the DiD trials, see how he fairs.

Name: Kromok the Unclean

Level: 6

Race: Orc

Difficulty: Master

Occupation: Chieftain of Gash Murug (player-owned stronghold mod).

Playstyle: Hates everyone, has formed a warband of various other orcs (multiple follower mod) and his goal is for them to become the most feared and wanted group of savage mofos in all of Tamriel.

Current Location: Karthwasten, picking over the slaughtered townsfolk and raiding their supplies. Next target is Rorikstead and after he has gained in power, supplies and equipment he'll take on the major cities.

As for backround, he's a brutal bloodthirsty killer that's killed more men than he's had hot dinners. Been hunted all over Tamriel but now he's decided to make a stand in Skyrim and fight all who come to him, and he'll show them no mercy.

That's about it. I use survival mods such as needing food, water, sleep and warmth (moderate level) and no fast travel.

I'll let you know when he dies (hopefully in glorious battle).

the controller issues are my biggest reload aspectsof DiD.

for me, that's about as pure a glitch as there is outside normal game glitches. you said it perfectly: the game didn't respond.

you'll notice all kinds of very real glitches that have the potential of getting you killed in DiD: game, controller and environment. if my daughter (or, any woman) walks across my screen and i die, that's an easy reload.

case by case.

btw, reduce the difficulty on your first try at DiD. or, second. no big freakin deal.

but, i guarantee this: you'll be a better player after playing a few serious DiD characters.

I'm in.

My Character will be known as Jo'kesh Nerothen. He's Khajiit obviously, but he's not from Elsweyr, he was a servant of the Telvanni until the explosion of Red Mountain drove everyone out of Morrowind. And when I say servant, well that's sort of an understatement. The telvanni may have "officially" renounced the slave trade, but unofficially, only an exploding mountain interrupting their studies could change things. As such, the Khajiit known as Jo'Kesh is afraid of all things magickal, and being that he was born and bred in Morrowind, he knows more about Dunmer ways than Khajiit ways. He's not going to know what to make of Caravan Khajiit. He also fears that any elves may very well wish him to be their test servant again. Jo'Kesh doesn't like being a test subject, nor did he like seeing the others resurrected to be test subjects again. He's illiterate as well -- he likes books, mostly because the Telvanni Masters always had them and thought them important -- he just doesn't understand the strange markings in them.

I think I already like Jo'Kesh Nerothan

That term, along with "grinding" is thrown around this forum too freely. People like to dub that as cheating, but that's they way the game's mechanics are set up. No matter if you spam / grind call it what you want, you are still leveling.

Some skills almost require grinding, to get any benefit from them. I mean I want to cast Dead Thrall now, not wait until I'm level 50. If I'm still alive, I am about ready to retire that character and start a new one.

Take smithing for example. you are not really Godlike if you just stop at Legendary. Just getting smithing to 100 doesn't create a gamebreaker.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1367972-smithing/page__view__findpost__p__20654134

So, you are still leveling. If you don't feel awkward about it,(and you shouldn't)...ROCK ON!

I have a question however about what constitutes as a glitch:

-I have died a few times where I try to use a shout / power, what have you, and the game doesn't respond to my command on the controller. imseeingred put it well. That is indeed a glitch. If you hit the button, and the game doesn't respond, that is not your fault. There have been several issues with Shouts not responding. Although, that was in earlier versions and I believe they are all patched. I may me mistaken.

And still better advice from imseeingred, is to adjust the difficulty to your comfort zone. I cannot stress enough, that playing on master is NOT a requirement here.

I have a question about whether this would be considered a glitch. Sometimes when I play my character will just start walking in a random direction and I have no control at all until it stops, it only lasts a couple seconds, so would that be considered a glitch where you could reload? Does this happen to anyone else (I play on PS3)?

if you died during that 'glitch' would it feel like an authentic death?

of course not.

you're describing a controller glitch.

He he...Yes, I can say, with the most certainty, that it would be a "glitch". Just ask yourself this, "Was that me or the game?", "Did I have control over that?" If a follower pushes you off a cliff. That is defiantly the game as you had no control.

EDIT : Then again, if you are just being careless and derp off the side of a bridge, then sux2BU...

Thanks for the replies, guys. I probably will give it a go on Master - at least to start with, just because, well, that's what I'm used to playing on. If I find myself not being able to get through many levels on Master, I may give it a try.

But I think I'm interested enough to give this a go. It might not be immediately, but I'm interested enough to give this a go.

More importantly, I'm just trying to decide if I want to continue with my "main" character right now or delete and start over. Things were going real good with the build, but a rather big quest I was playing glitched (Forsworn Conspiracy) and it kind of really altered my game and roleplay. Not sure how I'm feeling about my current run through at the moment.

Of the ones I see my latest character is by far the highest level... Actually he was 11 levels higher than all the characters currently listed.... combined. I was very very sad when he passed. I was almost done with Skyrim... back to the drawing board. :(

Lord Cyrus Noxius (The lord is from his position and land ownership in House Telvanni).
Race: Dunmer
Borne: 3E 290(putting him around 130-140ish when the events of Morrowind occurred.)
Died: 4E 201(might have been 202 already... had him a longggg time).
Age: 343... I thought he was older actually.
Arch Mage of the College of Winterhold. Ex Telvanni Wizard. Ex arch mage of the Mages Guild. Has always had close ties to the thieves guild. Hated the DB, but has no qualms about infiltrating them or having one of his trusted assassins do it for him.

He survived since Morrowind... quite literally. Had this character since Morrowind, and with this particular player been playing DID since then. He is the character I let abuse alchemy, enchant, spellmaking, etc. so he had a knack for living.

Level at Death: 72, a few hundred hours of gameplay. Completed the Mages guild, DB, thieves guild, civil war, most side quests, and about half of the MQ. Wearing a full suit of enchanted deadric armor with a deadric sword. Mastered all of the schools of magic, knew all the master spells. Mastered one hand, alchemy, heavy armor, sneak, and a few other things I didn't really care about like speech and lockpick.

Cause of death: Arrogance or suicide depending on how you look at it. He was a master of shouting, would whirlwind sprint from town to town, use ethereal shout to jump off mountains. Well I did the two too close together. Whirlwind shouted, then was about to jump off a cliff and didn't realize that my cooldown bar was not ready.... and tried to cast ethereal shout. Did not go well, landed between a fisherman and a mudcrab he was about to kill. I guess I made his day, he owns 50-100k gold worth of enchanted awesomeness. For story.... he got bored with this mortal realm, killing himself so he could return to his rightful home... the Shimmering Isle.

Survived by his son who never really knew him. His son grew up in Cheydinhal and is my new character. Aryon. Currently level 12, primarily focusing in 1 hand, sneak, alchemy. Just starting to learn magic spells after learning who his father was and the magical potential he has.

@GorbadPS3 and LasskarIceHorn : We share your sorrow. EDIT : Oh, please post about your current characters.

@TalosGuidesMe : Glad to have you with us, and thank you for the reply on Femten. The Danish translation sounds better than just, Fifteen.

@imseeingred : Good luck with Uruk, the Orc Knight Warrior Chief. We are looking forward to the updates.

@General Masters : GM, ole buddy. As always, its good to hear from you. Not only, because we get to read about your characters, but your posts "Generally" include insiders on gamplay. Very informative...thank you.

@SaucepanBuran : Yet, another Orc. That is good. Keep us posted on Kromak the Unclean.

@septimine : I think I already like Jo'Kesh Nerothan, as well. Welcome on board the DiD Train. I'm sure everyone will be interested in hearing more about the magic-shy Khajiit.

Thanks you guys, I just didn't know if it was actually the controller or if it was part of the game maybe a mechanic or something.
Thanks for the replies, guys.
You are both very welcome. I / we hope to read about your characters adventures.

Yes. The purpose is explained, in a little more detail, in post #4, of this thread. Give us his / her name and character type. People are always interested in hearing about the characters.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just a note: The "spoiler" implication is referring to the areas of updated information on characters, that may get into details about items, places, enemies and / or quests. People like to tell about the adventures of their characters. The storytelling is a BIG part of this thread. If a person wishes put other info in spoiler tags, to lessen the space of a post, then that is fine too. However, that could cause some confusion on what the tags may or may not contain.
Level 72 is very commendable, indeed. I congratulate you on your efforts.
The few player Tombs and character graves, listed in the OP, are just random selections of previous threads. They are linked at the top, with all the previously fallen. I started doing it like that, so to keep the OP from being absolutely huge.
Although, the latest post will show the most recent of the fallen, it can get difficult in navigating through a large list.
I may rethink this, and possibly start a poll on including all of the fallen in the OP.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Remember folks, people play DiD for different reasons. For some, it's the sole accomplishment of getting to high levels. While that is how all of the playthroughs are pretty much presented, It's not just about how far you can get, as it is about how it makes you feel the entire time you are playing.

I've been thinking, which would be the absolutely weakest race to play DID with? rocs have berserk power, which is pretty much auto-win once a day. Argonians have 10x health regen, also auto-win. Bretons have passive magic resistance and once aday high magic absorb chance. High elves have more magicka and can regenerate magicka. Both nords and dunmers have elemental resistance. This leaves wood elves, khajiit, redguards and imperials. Of these, redguard have adrenaline rush. Khajiit have very strong claws in the early (toughest part) of the game. Meaning we now have wood elevs and imperials as the two worst races. From these two, the imperials can calm once a day, meaning they can escape death. But don't wood elves have poison resistance? (poison ressitance is useful against chaurus, falmer and spiders).

So hmm, which race would be the weakest?

I would say they are all pretty close. For one reason or another, pending the playstyle. How ever, I would say that starting with any, and playing them against the grain and don't use the powers. With the exception of my Imperial Vampires, using the VoTE, I can count the number of times I have used the powers on both hands. That is out of 14 characters.
