Thoughts on restriction within own faction's provinces?

Oh well, I guess Ill have to make three characters then.

As has been pointed out, that you need three characters to see all of Tamriel does not enchance faction loyalty.

It depends - if they make it 1 faction per server, it will. That's how DAOC was. My Hibernian characters were on 1 server and my Midgardians were on another. I never played Albion, cuase my first characters were Hibs, and we really, really hated the Albs on our server, so I could never bring myself to make one - even on another server. LOL.

That right there is the type of faction pride I was talking about ;-)

But yeah... Work it out with your friends beforehand as to which faction you'll be. Then you can coordinate with them on your next one.

Restricting you to one alliance per server is hardcoe. I hope they do that in ESO.

That would be the final nail in the coffin for playing with friends.

Not if you play on a coop server like they had in DAoC...

That wouldn't matter when I'm restricted to one faction there as well ...

You could group with anyone and go anywhere. Tht is how the coop servers played. It seems like a few posters in this thread are complaining just to complain.

I know, but this thread was a great example. All he had to do was a quick Google search on the matter to see how DAoC, which this game is obviously drawing a lot of ideas from, handled the server sets to see that on a Cooperative server you could go anywhere and group with anyone.

Dark Age of Camelot this, Dark Age of Camelot that...
World of Warcraft this, World of Warcraft that...
Star Wars: The Old Republic this, Star Wars: The Old Republic that...

Anyway, I would indeed love to see these "Co-op Servers from DAOC" in TESO, especially if there were RP-Co-op server possibilities; I dare say those would be a TES role player's dream.

People are blowing these things out of proportion in my opinion; -I am- rather sure Zenimax Online has a clear plan they wish to pursue, and that plan includes all the what-ifs, positive and negative, of the player reactions.

Whatever happens, I suppose I could get used to role playing with only Bretons and Redguards - which would both most probably be openly racist towards the Orsimer, never mind their covenant.

One thing I would like to note is that this game isn't just being made for MMO fans, but also TES fans. Now personally I think the game being heavily inspired by DAoC is fantastic and will give ZMO a lot of room to do some amazing things. That being said, I can understand those that never played DAoC could have some major reservations about how the game worked. TES fans aren't here to play a DAoC game but rather a TES game, and I think that's a fair argument.

Not everyone is a hardcoe PvPer, and that seemed to be the particular audience DAoC appealed to the most. But as many said, ZMO will likely also have a co-op server as DAoC did for those that don't want the 3-faction PvP and don't want to be restricted to their respective provinces. We'll just have to wait and see as more information comes out. I think once players get to experience hands-on of the game they'll be able to objectively discern whether they are truly for or against such a system, and then they can pick a server that fits their playstyle best.

I don't know. But what has that to do with anything? We know nothing, nothing about TESO's server structure. Infering we will have co-op servers because DAoC had them and Matt Firor was working for that game is far fetched.

Anyway. You guys made me look up DAoC's co-op server features ...

"A single server similar to the Normal servers, except the designated RvR zones have been modified. Instead of RvR, the three realms cooperate and attack NPC controlled keeps, which are located in the RvR zones, and other PvE areas. A high percentage of the PvE action takes place in Darkness Falls dungeon. High level enemies defend the locations where PvP gameplay would normally take place. All classes and races are opened up to the player and teleportation is possible between realms."

That's not what I want. I want the faction vs faction PvP in Cyrodiil, I think it's a great mechanic and look forward to defending mines and forts with my faction. But I don't want this to restrict my PvE game. I don't want to have to chose between "either you can't play with all your friends, or you can't play against anybody".

Nah. hardcoe PvP MMO players are playing EVE Online, Darkfall and Lineage II - where you can get killed by anybody, nearly anywhere. DAoC is only slightly more "hardcoe" than WoW, really.

But that would break the immersion of this games world where 3 alliances are at war with one another. It wouldn't make sense to have other factions grouping up with enemy factions and hanging out questing and doing PvE before they go fight each other.

And if I remember correctly, immersion was the big thing a lot of posters were complaining about. They want to roleplay and be fully immersed in the world. Well, this is full immersion in this setting. A 3 way war is raging between seperate factions. That's your roleplay. You can't go and hang our with other enemy factions to PvE.

Those are certainly more sandbox-oriented, niche MMOs. I know from first-hand experience from playing Darkfall Online. That being said, PvP definitely seems to be much more of a prevalent focus in this game than in your typical, mainstream AAA MMO title. It's not a bad thing of course, but I understand why players who may not like PvP would be concerned.

My only real issue with this province limitation is it wouldn't make sense in a real war. Sure, it makes sense to have borders that are heavily guarded from any marauders who may do your people harm. However, war is about dominance and forcing one's authority over others. Many wars happen because of territorial disputes and fear of a belligerent's expansion of power. I even remember one of the developers stating that the main reason the Daggerfall Covenant is even involved in this three-way war is because of the fear of expansion from belligerents and the potential loss of trade routes and profits. We know for certain the Aldmeri Dominion would love to take over all the provinces as they see themselves as the superior race.

I'm not saying that ZMO needs to change their PvP model, however a person earlier in the thread did make a ingenius suggestion of a mix of DAoC and Warhammer mechanics to fix this issue. Since the major PvP goal of the game is to take control of the Imperial City and have your faction take the thrown, there should be an additional benefit to that. Whoever is successful enough to eclipse the thrown and dominance over Cyrodiil should then have the potential of invading enemy provinces.

This isn't trench warfare and it just doesn't make sense that any one of the three factions would just stop after taking the imperial throne. This is my only real issue with what ZMO is enacting as it doesn't make a lot of sense (obviously it does somewhat in regards to the PvP system). The game still has a lot of potential if they keep it the way it currently is with PvP ending at Cyrodiil. But I do truly believe there are a lot of opportunities ZMO could gain if they were to make slight modifications to the DAoC model.

It wouldn't break "immersion" one bit. It's silly to assume that every member of one race is part of the war effort. There are traders, diplomats, religious leaders, etc. Those professions don't cease to exist because there's a war. Where is the roleplay here? Besides, according to ZOS, players are expected to form alliances between factions to defeat the third one - why would I not be allowed to venture into my allies' territory? Why shouldn't I be able to support them on their home turf?
And that doesn't even tackle the "immersion breaker" of the races themselves being limited to their province. The races of Tamriel have always traveled the continent, why not now?

No. Don't get me started on immersion.

I think its great for the type of game this looks like its going to be. Three faction war based more on PvP then PvE. If this was just another run of the mill two faction PvE game then sure it doesn't make much sense.

While we have no idea what the classes or professions will be yet we can assume that they will all be combat based classes and not be able to make a politician class or a baker or shoe maker class. When you make your choices of faction and class at the start you make it with the assumption that you are a willing participant in the conflict. Then beyond that is where your RP comes in. You won't just be able to make a blank slate and do whatever you want, you 'll be given certain choices to make and then you take it from there.

So to answer the question "Why not now?" Because thats the way the devs have chosen to set this game up. Its really as simple as that.
