Throwing spears confirmed (maybe)

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 6:34 am

Spears are a Morrowind thing. They are not used in Skyrim. It's just like the Redguards from Hammerfell and their curved Scimitars. Obviously you would go to Solstheim to obtain a spear for the first time. I would assume you would learn spear making from the Dunmer then it will be available in Skyrim.

If they are 2-H I am going to be pissed... those are PIKES not spears. Thrusting spears are one handed, with a shield.

spears are the most common Ancient/ Medieval weapon in our History as in Tamriel, all Human races are know to use spears in their military (especially Imperials and Nords) the Elven and beast races too, also Argonians are know Master Spearmen in lore, so it's not a Morrowind Thing

Fighting 300 style with a shield and spear would be quite fun. I would hope for both throwing spears and 1/2 handed spear. Hell, it would be awesome if we could have all.

And a really big shield? a la "300"?

Definitely. Although I will settle for the spears and use shield of Ysgramor if I must.

There are no 2-handed spears, that is when they become PIKES. Spears are one handed, and are used with a shield in the off hand. Like Greek hoplites.

Why does it matter if the spears are throwable or not? It seems like most of the people discussing the Dragonborn expansion on these forums are only concerned about whether a wooden stick with a chiseled stone on the end of it is wielded with two hands or thrown. Even when the Elder Scrolls games still had spears in them, most players whom I have spoken to never used them, so who cares? I for one am just anxious to return to Solstheim for the first time in over two-hundred years and see how the fine Dunmer and Nord folk have changed the island.

Welcome to 2 weeks ago.

Playable spears aren't in. There's no equip data for them in the executable.

I just hope Spears will have a very unique handling and not just another weapon.

Could it be possible, if throwing spears were included, that they ended up being used like ammo? They would be semi-recoverable and could be a new crafted item. Just a thought..

This is what I've been saying about thrown spears, or javelins, if you prefer. I know they are something different than bows and crossbows, but they could have them fall under the Archery skill tree. The Archery perks could work with such a weapon. It's just the title of the Skill that throws it off...Archery. If it was 'Marksmanship' or 'Ranged' it might fit better with other thrown or ranged weapons, but the mechanic is there. It could even be used for throwing daggers, knives, axes, darts, slings, etc.

Or, at the very least, use Telekinesis or Unrelenting Force to launch your spears :D

Probably this. I don't think we're getting playable spears to use, but certain enemies will get to use them. They might continue trying to get them playable, but I think they're just having too much trouble getting the animations right and getting them to actually be fun to use, which doesn't look like it's ever going to happen at this point.

This is confirmed by the fact that crossbows were given equip data through a patch just before the release of Dawnguard, and there is no such thing included with Patch 1.8. I don't even remember exactly if Patch 1.8 even added any first person data for spears AFAIK, though if you know otherwise, post solid evidence of it.

I think they wouldve shown an actual NPC or the PC at least holding a spear in the trailer or screens if we could indeed use them
im guessing that the spears are just part of the reiklings abilities
kinda how we cant use giants clubs (barring a few eastereggish exceptions for followers)
then again maybe we can
who knows

Well, in the Skyrim trailer you could see the cold breath coming out of Dovahkiin, but no such feature in the game. Trailers has the virtue of misleading people.

Keep in mind too that hammers do not have a unique equip type either, so it may not mean anything. Still, I'd like to to double-check to see if there are first person assets for spears. Thought there may have been, but I honestly don't remember clearly enough to confirm if there are, hence why I'd appreciate it if someone could check if possible.

Hammers use the same animations (equip slot) as 2H axes. I'd like to see a spear do that.

Basically you'd need a new executable, and the one that's shipped is the RC for dragonborn.

I'd hardly be upset if we got throwing spears (although they're horrendously inefficient as weapons, seeing how difficult they are to throw with any penetrative power or real accuracy). But one-handed and two-handed mêlée spears surely have to be priorities, in that order.

Spear and shield FTW.

Not actually true, spears can be one handed two with out being pikes. Pikes were a type of spear with a specific design and extreme length(10ft-25ft). But being a two-handed spear doesn't make one a pike.

I think we'd probably get to throw them. I can't for the life of me understand why beth would include throwing spears for enemies and not the players, so we probably should get it.

Bethesda have been careful it seems so far with enemy weapons being equipable by the player. The only really weapon you cannot equip yourself is the giants club (and even then, a follower can under special circumstances), the other one was the Dwarven crossbow that spheres wielded but then that became available in DG.
