There are countless words and phrases that aren't always used literally, so I don't see what the fuss is over this one. Is the term really that annoying?

Again, I don't know exactly why, but it does really bother me. I cannot precisely pinpoint why, but just does.

The proper term is "avatar" That's right, it's not just limited to forum pics and blue aliens.

I can only speak for myself, it will only bother me if I'm suspicious the user of the term(any term) does not know the correct meaning.

I don't know how old you happen to be. But the use of Toon as a reference to characters is quite old. We we using that term back late 90s to 2000s

I'm only 27, but I never remember running into the term, especially not widely, until recently. Also, I'm not a big mmo player, so that may account for the culture shock. I did play a fair amount of MUDs and MUSHes back in the day, but I could never really get on board with the subscription model.

I'll tell you why people call them "toons" and "mobs". It's short. It's easier than typing out "character" or "monster" in chat.

Doesn't mean you can't get angry at it. Personally I disregard everything anybody says if they use 'u' and 'y' like they were actual words.

But then why not just type "char" or "mons" into the chat? Mob I can understand a bit, because you can actually have a mob of monsters.

Because they've seen other people do it. Like Dragon Hunter said it's nothing new, so over time people hear other people use the term and so they start to use it themselves. How does any MMO lingo come into use?

Mob is short for mobile. Monsters wouldn't be very threatening if they weren't mobs.

True. My objection isn't really over the existence of the lingo, rather people using it to describe things in single player games, which already have their own linguistic conventions.

Me, I think there are bigger problems in our world than people's vocabularies. It's not my place to judge how people talk.

Well, the name was originally inspired by a Newtown Neurotics song, but it's served me well. There's hypocrisy in everyone at some point, myself included.

I refuse to call my characters 'toons' and tend to just call them what they are... characters. Toon is better suited to be an abbreviation of cartoon. Oh well, doesn't bother me what people call their chars as long as I don't have to use it. haha. :bonk:

The whole trend of dumbed down english and text message abbreviations in normal conversation irritate me quite alot. Even more so when the 'words' (and I use that term loosely) used are so irritating.

Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy, maybe the average intellect and attention span of people is getting lower, or perhaps I just hold higher than normal standards for my native language... one thig for sure though, it realy realy gets on my nerves.

I always refer to player characters as either 'player character', 'character' or 'PC' . I think MMO's in general have alot to answer for....

Seems like an odd thing to be bothered about to me.

But then again, I get really irritated whenever someone says they "could care less", so I'm just as bad. :P

Doesn't bother me. Sometimes I think it's "cute". I guess if it was done a lot it might get on my nerves. But there are lots of other things to perform that function.

I use "Character" or "Player's Character". I don't think I've every used the terms 'toon or avatar.

This might not be a strict definition of "avatar", but for me avatar has the connotation of being a representation of me in the game. And my character's are not me, so I naturally don't use avatar.

Calling your character a 'toon' is idiotic. Starting a thread about how much you hate people calling their characters 'toons' is only slightly less so. Internet lingo is usually a result of dumb, lazy people getting together, so you can expect stupid words or expressions like "toons", "like a boss", "aggro", and "ur mom".

"Aggro" is as bad as "ur mom?" :P Seemed pretty reasonable, at least in an MMO setting. Get an enemy on me and I can't be bothered to type out too much while running away/being beaten to death.

How dare someone use a different colloquial slang shorthand than the one I prefer! :swear:

:whistling:

(What's even more amusing is going to the WoW forums, and seeing threads from the old Everquest dudes, complaining and moaning about how THEY created all the "proper" MMO terms back in the 90s, and how dare these modern upstarts use them incorrectly.. )

I know how. World of Warcraft, AKA the worst MMO ever made. >.>

Meh, there's plenty worse MMOs out there. At least if you're talking about quality, not just doing that "hipster rage against all things popular" thing that seems big on internet forums.

Haha, I was just listing random silly abbreviations and mummorpuger-colloquialisms. I can get "aggro", at least it has a nice ring to it :D

I hear "aggro" all the time in the UK - didn't class it as a gaming term at all.

Never heard about this before lol. I just call them "the hero" no matter if he/she is a hero or not. I guess I got it from Zelda OoT or something when I was a kid
