'Toons'

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 2:15 am

I'm not normally one to judge people because of their lexicon, nor to tell others what to do, but I really dislike people referring to their characters as 'toons' on the forums. I'm not trying to troll anybody, I just don't think that it fits the culture that exists here. I cannot explain exactly why, but I just fine it irritating, and would sincerely ask people to not use it. I have no right to ask, but I would be very appreciative. I apologize in advance if someone takes offense to this. Again, that's not my intention. Just an earnest plea.

I wholeheartedly agree a million fold. I absolutely despise that term, it makes absolutely no sense to me. If I ever see that term used anywhere ever again I will scream. :flame: It's not just irritating it's MADDENING!

In the sense that they're animated characters? I don't know. Personally I don't think that all form of animation should be pigeonholed into 'Cartoons'.

You're right I think I'll go back to "virtual representation of what I wish I was in a role playing game" .

Since the term itself is derived from cartoon, I'd have to agree with the OP, I've not seen any cartoons in these games, I've seen a lot of 3D models with some very nice texturing, but definitely no hand drawn cartoons.

I don't like 'mobs'. Wouldn't dream of telling anyone else not to use the term, though. In fact, free speech is important, and that freedom really should extend to colloquialisms and argot.

I know. I'm not demanding anything here. It's just a personal plea, which I probably shouldn't have voiced, but it irks me.

Or a character?

That would be far too easy! Everything must be more complicated than it needs to be.

The term comes from MMO player's refering to their characters in MMO's as Toons, somehow it has crossed over into many RPG games.

Heh. At the heart of RP isn't it all about a character, though?

While I agree with freedom of speech, one of the things I've noted about the internet is a loose term becoming fact, and that's not a good thing in my opinion.

I know how. World of Warcraft, AKA the worst MMO ever made. >.> Not only is it terrible, it's terribly popular. Too popular.

Oy Vey. I really wasn't trying to fight anyone on this. I just don't really get how it applies. Unless people view all forms of animation as cartoons, or I'm finally becoming the ornery old man that I swore I never would.

There are countless words and phrases that aren't always used literally, so I don't see what the fuss is over this one. Is the term really that annoying?

I don't know how old you happen to be. But the use of Toon as a reference to characters is quite old. We we using that term back late 90s to 2000s

No, it's all about how many monsters you can kill in the shortest amount of time.
