'Toons'

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:18 am

they are possibly afraid of being called childish for using a derivative coming from what has become associated as children shows, my guess is the majority of people bothered by it think they are young advlts instead of children

I guess I'm in the minority. . .

I was introduced to "toon" in the Fallout forum, and the idea of a Fallout character being a "toon" never made sense.

We should keep the toons in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toontown.

Erginho & Mumatil,
Neither had I until recently, and primarily in the Skyrim general discussion forum. It just feels out of place here.

Never understood why an avatar created in a game or MMO came to be called a "toon."

More than that, I also never cared.

The proper term is "avatar" That's right, it's not just limited to forum pics and blue aliens.

*Looks at my forum avatar.* :ahhh:

People using "toons" to describe their characters has never bothered me. It just makes me think of Loony Toons, which makes me happy. :P

I tend to stick to "character," personally. Though I can understand why the term bothers you. We all have our pet peeve words and phrases. (Ironically one of mine is peeve.)

<-- Are we talkin' about this mug?

it's a toon, folks.

Seems like an odd thing to be bothered about to me.

But then again, I get really irritated whenever someone says they "could care less", so I'm just as bad. :P
When I use that I'm implying that I would have to go to great lengths, putting myself in grave danger and my reputation at personal risk to be able to care less.

But I could, if I wanted to.. :)

people who couldn't care less just aren't applying themselves to their fullest potential..

it's really quite tragic..

sad even..

I haven't heard Toon ever being used before now. But when i saw this post and really thought about it, the word does really bug me. It just doesn't fit. Every time I hear Toon, I think of mickey mouse, and donald duck or something like that. I would feel weird calling my virtual self a Toon..

I wonder if one can get a warning for swearing in hexidecimal.

In regards to the word toon, I feel like it comes from the same crowd of people who refer to enemies as mobs.

I don't like 'mobs'. Wouldn't dream of telling anyone else not to use the term, though. In fact, free speech is important, and that freedom really should extend to colloquialisms and argot.

This.

Also, I played WoW for several years, and thusly I'm immune to annoyance by gaming shorthand.

You can't kill slang  I don't like it, in my opinion is degrades the maturity of roleplaying games because of the connotation of the term. The only one that really annoys me is calling the player character a PC. Yes, PC = Player Character, but I always have to reread a post twice that uses that term since I initially see it as a computer :P

I completely agree with you, the term 'Toon' just seems wrong... it should be character. It just really really bugs me when people say 'Toon', no matter the context, in fact.

Toon and Swag(ger) are the two words that just really get on my nerves.

But swag is an actual word with an actual meaning that, when used in context, actually makes sense.

The thing is that it's never used in any context with the people my age.

Thanks to everyone for not persecuting me for my antipathy of a certain word. I believe that everyone is entitled to their viewpoint, and people can refer to their characters in any manner that they see fit, I would just prefer that people refer to their characters as characters in these forums.
Cheers everybody.

You actually think anything will change now?

Also, I hate the word 'swag' too.

We shouldn't discourage people from using "toon". I feel that it's a pretty decent litmus test for finding out whether someone is worthwhile.

Toon and Swag(ger) are the two words that just really get on my nerves.

What's wrong with "swag"?
