'Toons'

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:33 am

I have always called them toons at least in WoW ever since I started playing when it was released.

I called my WoW characters, "toons" but never my characters in sp RPGs. Still don't see why anyone finds the need to care what someone calls their character in game.

Never heard about this before lol. I just call them "the hero" no matter if he/she is a hero or not. I guess I got it from Zelda OoT or something when I was a kid

If you got it from the Legend of Zelda games, shouldn't you be calling the main character THIEF?

I only use it in multiplayer games. A single-player game has character, while mutliplayer games have toons and builds.

I always found the term "toon" to be distasteful too. It seems like a childish term and brings to mind childish things. I usually use the term "character" or something like that. I have grown to tolerate the term a little more after playing a lot of WoW, where everyone would use it.

I prefer the term "pixellated". It just sounds more elegant than "toon".

I've got two level 80 pixellateds? :P

I've never really cared what people call them, I'm sure I've used toon before, but normally I just used char and chars if I'm trying to be quick.

The hell's a toon? NEVER seen it mentioned before, and I've been here for years.

The only toon I know is Newcastle United.

Would rather "lol" was struck from language. Can see where you're coming from though.

This. I use "char" to abbreviate character, or unrelated words like guy or dude.

This is what it was called some 16 years ago when I played MUDs.

I also hate the word "loadout" like I've just frigging clicked an option in a menu for purely statistical reasons.

I also dislike the word loot. You don't loot flesh from a slaughtered deer, you don't loot something that has been lost in a cave for 600 years!

You butcher, you salvage, you take part in amateur archaeology, you don't loot.

Hey, see that ruin over there? I'm gonna take part in amateur archaeology that whole place.

I'm not normally one to judge people because of their lexicon, nor to tell others what to do, but I really dislike people referring to their characters as 'toons' on the forums. I'm not trying to troll anybody, I just don't think that it fits the culture that exists here. I cannot explain exactly why, but I just fine it irritating, and would sincerely ask people to not use it. I have no right to ask, but I would be very appreciative. I apologize in advance if someone takes offense to this. Again, that's not my intention. Just an earnest plea.

I'm going to start referring to all my characters as toons specifically to spite you now. Congratulations. :P

And on a serious note, does it really matter? I do tend to call my characters toons when it comes to MMOs, because I started off in EQ and that what we called them, so I got into that habit. Just replace it with character if it bothers you.

I used to play WoW so I've seen and used all sorts of gaming shorthand. None of it ever bothered me, and sorry, but I find it a little amusing that it bothers some people so much.

I know how. World of Warcraft, AKA the worst MMO ever made. >.> Not only is it terrible, it's terribly popular. Too popular.

That statement doesn't make ANY sense LOL.

"This absurdly popular thing, this MMO that has 12 million active subscribers and is the biggest grandest MMO on the planet that trumps the subs of any other MMO x12, is terrible! Terrible I say! Nyeah!"

Uhhhhhhhh. Ok.

Well, you're new here. You'll learn in time that "it's popular, so it svcks" is a religion here :teehee:

Man, all these new terminologies and subsequent confusion makes me want to start to talk in hexadecimals.

I've never heard anyone use the phrase "toon" on this forum or anywhere else.

When I play FFXI, I never called it my "toon". It was my character. Maybe cause I couldn't just go and make "toons" all willy nilly, so my character had value to it.

Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy, maybe the average intellect and attention span of people is getting lower, or perhaps I just hold higher than normal standards for my native language... one thig for sure though, it realy realy gets on my nerves.

I see what you did there.

I use toon sometimes because it's easier to type, and if it bothers someone then frankly I couldn't give a toss.

they are possibly afraid of being called childish for using a derivative coming from what has become associated as children shows, my guess is the majority of people bothered by it think they are young advlts instead of children
