Unique loot does not feel UNIQUE

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 12:49 pm

Just watched a video of a guy playing Morrowind. There was a part when he had to defeat a member or Her Hand's in order to progress in the main quest. When he finally managed to slam to poor dude down with his hammer he started to loot the corpse. He was like - "Oh wow! Everything is enchanted... and it's a full set of Her Hand's!".

And here is the thing. I can't remember even once feeling exited in Skyrim like he was in MW. Most armors and weapons are craftable and better then anything You find. Few hours near the forge and You're fully equipped BADASS, without even going out of the city. Yes there are some exceptions but they are not memorable for me at all.

I remember how I used to hunt the Ordinator Set parts or was going into different homes/stores to steal rare armor pieces fro my collection.

Any "Loot Hunter" here who feels the same?

Perhaps this is because "feeling" something is a subjective response that you can't really put a formula on. A cynical MW player could say, "well, Hands armour is just ordinator armour with an enchantment - I could make something better with my uber character."

That said - I agree that it is kind of disappointing when you get to the end of a quest and someone says "have this reward!", and its usually not as good as what you've got.

Part of the Hands quest is how much they're built up, as well. In MW, ordinators on their own are really tough sobs, and the Hands are presented as uber-ordinators, who stand in a hallowed sanctuary and basically look really tough. Part of the special loot could perhaps be helped by stronger presentation in that sense.

That's the real problem with crafting systems in general. I still don't think you should be able to craft Daedric.

Me.

I remember doing the Legion quest where you had to free the Tax collecter in Gnisis, I cleard a room with two skeletons at Lvl 2, pretty tough, used my only scroll of Ekash's lock splitter in a 45 locked chest, Looted a Daedric Dai Katana and a Glass jinxblade.
Needless to say, I was happy.

Wabbajack is an exception but come on... who doesn't like Sheogorath and his crazy stuff.

The thing is that there are a lot of cool stuff ingame, like Ebony Blade. Unfortunately quest that involves getting it is just **** . It's not even 10 minutes long.

Dragonbone cuirass.
I was really hoping that because this is Skyrim and everything here is about Dragons I will be able to get this one. How wrong was I...

Yeah, there's a dearth of unique loot. I liked the treasure-finding aspect of Morrowind, you never knew if the next urn or chest would have a powerful ring, or when you'd just follow an underwater passageway and stumble on to a daedric treasure-trove.

exacly, daedric is supposed to be only craftable by daedra refining ebony and fusing in a daedra's soul by some wierd ritual

now any random person can poop it out with a few daedra hearts and ebony ingots, available at almost any random merchant

its pathetic

Unique loot is fairly pointless when it doesn't scale to your level (or completely removes the option of improving it with your smithing skill). Even my old rusty steel sword will deliver more damage than random daedric weapons and weapons found in various locations.

yeah, there really is no unique armor in the game. And if there is, it isn't as good as a craftable weapon. It's pretty damn lame.

Too much emphasis is placed on 'SuP@R 1337 SHokSworDz Of KillZ' in TES. A unique weapon does not a good RP experience make. Learn to connect with your character first and foremost. For all my 80 hours in Skyrim the humble base Iron sword has ever been my main weapon.

ik... wish there were some giant bosses who had a chance of dropping some leete stuff instead of... farming ebony ore, then going to a forge... i mean there was a chance to do something really epic with armor that looked as good as daedric or dragon armor, some elite boss who was hard as hell to down but once you finally got him, it was all worth it, haven't fealt that in forever...

Me for sure! I remember in MW when I defeated Umbra I almost had an orgism. Or in Oblivion when I got full glass I felt unstoppable. It's the little things in gaming that are priceless ;]

Logically, that depends on your character. Some characters may stick with an iron sword, but that doesn't mean that every character has to.

Also, some people (most people probably) don't roleplay, and as such when they find "amazing equipment that is unique and awesome" - stuff like daedric artifacts, that are meant to be awesome gifts that are super powerful - and find out that their Skyforge Steel Sword (Legendary) with 2 enchantments is much better, thats a little disapointing.

When I played Skyrim I was pissed that you had to craft Daedric in order to get it. You can find it in dungeons (I Did), but it doesn't feel the same as finding... like... daedric gauntlets in morrowind.

as long as i have wabbajack, and i do feel like i earned it and that it shouldn't be any harder to get since well... the quest chain is amusing... anything with sheogorath is... back to point, as long as i have wabbajack, im kewl, i can be completely nvde, with just wabbajack, and be happy and probably still down alduin...

I completely agree. In Morrowind (with all the expansions) there was ONE full set of Daedric armour.

On my first Skyrim character, there must have been at least 20 floating around the world. It doesn't feel special at all, just like steel with + stats.

Agreed. Any armor you can craft is better than other thing, every enchantment you can make is stronger than other enchantments, every potion you create is stronger than you can buy.

When was the last time that the unique loot was truly unique?

Hey look! I did a daedric quest, and got this artifact!

It should be worse, but I can make better than a DAEDRIC LORD can. Logical!
