Unofficial "Is [insert game name here] any good?" Th

Post » Fri Jun 14, 2013 2:12 pm

It's on a different engine so it is rather different. The combat is much better, this time you control Geralt while fighting rather than clicking when the mouse flashes.
It's a shorter story, but the game is vastly different depending on a choice in act 1, so I would recommend a second playthrough. The story is very good, it's better than the first one in my opinion.
Alchemy is not as good as in the first one, there aren't as many side quests, less dialog. However, the quality of the voice acting and side quests are overall better than in the first one.
For that price it's at right now it is a must buy if you like RPGs with greeeat stories.

I just realized I have The Witcher amulet as my picture, I must seem very credible...

Here are some differences:
  • Combat has been revamped. It now plays more like a straight-up action game than Witcher 1's odd rhythmic auto-attack system.
  • You can no longer drink potions in the middle of combat. You can only drink them while meditating, and only three at most. You still have to balance your toxicity levels.
  • The leveling system has changed. Rather than cash in assorted "tokens" to purchase new upgrades for each fighting style and spell, you instead invest skill points into a more traditional skill tree that pretty much divides everything up into Swordsmanship, Magic, and Alchemy. It's impossible to master everything.
  • There are more weapons and armors in the game that can be found, bought, or crafted. Upgrades are more frequent.
  • The Alchemy system has been simplified a bit. You just need to mix ingredients with the right "substances" together; needing a strong alcohol base for some potions/poisons/bombs/whatever is no longer necessary.
  • The only weapon types you have are your swords. There are few more pieces of armor though (chest, pants, boots, and gloves).
  • There are fewer choices to make over the course of the game. However, there is one especially big choice that pretty much changes about how the last 65% of the game unfolds.

How's LOTR: War in the North?

I have played Champions: RTA on PS2 if it's like that at all.

I couldn't get into The Witcher 1 (Believe me, I've tried. 12 hours in and it still didn't grab me so I gave up) but The Witcher 2 had me hooked right from the start. I like the combat system a lot more, and it's a gorgeous looking game. I didn't get far in it yet but it seems like a definite pick up at that price.

While I'm here, about Castle Crashers. I'm curious, but most of what I've heard is about the Xbox version. Is the PC one a quality port? And does the game have any singleplayer capacity?

I know this probably won't get an answer, but; what about Planescape: Torment? I've heard nothing but good things about that game, has anyone here played it?

I just started playing it about a week ago, you should definitely get it! Most of my time playing it is spent in dialogue (which I love) and it has one of the most unique stories and settings, the only problem is the combat, which isn't too great, but you can usually find non-combat solutions to most situations. Unfortunately my game keeps crashing consistently close to the end of the game

Hopefully you'll fare better but even if you do encounter any chrases like I did it's still worth, one of my best video game experiences in a while.

I quit the witcher2 because I stuck in the same place and I don't know where to go but the story is good.

Playing all these old classics from the 90's/00's (like Thief and Deus Ex) is making me realise what the gaming medium has lost over the years.

The biggest improvement over TW1 is quest structure. CDPR made huge strides in designing engaging quests with multiple outcomes. TW2's approach is more focused and efficient. Much less backtracking.

Kingdoms of Amalur is a lootfest with great combat and a lot to explore. Lots of customization. The quests aren't nothing special and neither is the story itself, but its interesting enough and there is a lot to customize. It's open world but not a sandbox. The game has flaws but its good...and it has its own charm. Lots and lots of content. If Oblivion and Fable had a baby...and added God of War combat...this is what you'd get. Worth a look if looking for a RPG.

Yeah Kingdoms of Amalur is pretty good right now. My only complaint so far is that the dialogue is uninteresting and sometimes to command to loot something won't work unless I mash the A button.

Whta about Too Human? Because I could get it for $6 at Gamestop new and apparently it could be a collector's item in a decade or two (then again for it to become a collector's item there had to have been actual demand for it) because Silicon Knights was ordered to destroy all unsold copies of it because of some lawsuit with Epic Games.

I've been watching a playthrough of it and what I've seen of it-it's great. They have the audio from the movie mixed with the lego characters during the cutscenes.

Good. There are some glitches that can be a pain but overall the customization of tactics make-up for it. It is genuinely disheartening when one of your veterans dies.....especially when he's named after yourself.

Cool. I'm more motivated to buy it because it's made by a developer (Firaxis) that made one of my favorite games, Civilization V

I saw a copy of Bioshock at my local used game store for $20. The game had a sleeve for the plastic box which still has the original shrink wrap on it. They also had a used copy of Bioshock 2 for $10. Should I pick them up?

Bioshock is really good. I didn't like Bioshock 2 that much, it felt like a sequel that didn't really need to be made.

Bioshock is a really great game. Has an excellent atmosphere and story to it. Bioshock 2 on the other not so much. It was made by a different developer and it really was unnecessary.

Bioshock is a quality game, but I imagine you can get it for less. I've seen it called by many an inferior clone of System Shock 2 (it was intentionally a spiritual sequel, hence the name), but I haven't played SS2 and can't compare. The gameplay is fun but can get repetitive; it doesn't take long before you're using the same handful of powers against the same basic enemies for the entire game, and it's quite easy. Most people love the game and aren't bothered by this, but it's something to be aware of. I haven't played the sequel, but most people consider it to be not as good, though not a BAD game. I'd recommend just getting the first if you get either, and only approaching the sequel afterward if you just can't get enough Bioshock.

Thanks for the info on Bioshock, I'll get the first one and leave the second alone for the time being. I like supporting this local shop anyway so I wouldn't bother looking around for a cheaper price.
