Thinking about getting a game, but not sure if it'll be any good? Ask away!

For those replying: please explain why you did or didn't like a game; constructive feedback is more informative than a simple "this game was awesome" or "that game was awful."

For those asking: it helps to know what sort of game aspects turn you on or off, and what you already know about the game you are interested in. It's hard to address "is [game] good?" if we aren't sure what you like and don't like, and whether or not you know the basic info about the game (genre, plot premise).

Will not guarantee that you will love or hate a game you are considering purchasing/playing. Sometimes contains useful info about game problems that you can ask us here about (i.e. "I read [game] has a ton of bugs/has long loading times, are they really horribly buggy/long?").

How's Dawnguard? I just got 1600 MS points, and want to know this will be worth my money before I buy it.

@ Freespace 2, I bought it, went through the hideously convoluted FSOpen installation on top of the base game with the help of an instructions thread. You'd think that it'd be easier for everyone to just pack everything into one executable instead of writing a multi-step essay on how to pull disparate pieces of requisite data from all over the Internet and install them.

Complex installations like these always sap my enthusiasm for a game. I'll get around to the actual gameplay on the weekend, I reckon. The mods also look top-notch (Battlestar Galactica!), so I don't doubt I'll be getting many hours from this game.

Yeah, I feel your pain.. I'm going to have to re-install a bunch of old classics myself and Freespace 2's setup stops halfway through (I've had to deal with things like this before though) so I'm going to have to work around it. Also, not sure if you noticed but somewhere in there is the original Freespace as well, along with settings where you can add more graphics. You'll have to experiment with it for now, but that's what I remember when I did the FS2 Open.. going to try to get FS2 on my computer today if I can manage.

In terms of value, you'll get your worth from Dawnguard. It adds many hours of questing, both related to the Dawnguard MQ and side quests. It adds things like fletching, adds crossbows and adds quite a bit to the Lore. If you've always been curious about Falmer lore and culture, you'll find it here despite the fact they're extinct. The DLC focuses heavily on the Elder Scrolls as well. However, both the Vampire and Dawnguard questlines are like the Civil War, they are heavily similar. In fact, you end up doing the same things. The only difference is, who do you support? You don't quest for the glory of the Dawnguard, or hunt in the name of the Volkihar, you end up helping out a third party, Serana.

The mirrored storylines were highly disappointing, and you may run across rampant vampire attacks, but those are two of the biggest gripes in my opinion. If you are a TES really devoted fan, get it. If you want a DLC worth your money, get it. Will you love it? Ehh, that's up to you.

I bought it the day it came out....and haven't played it since See I was all about to go kill some vampires, but then I started doing side quests in the game and never even made it to the DLC content. Kind of burned myself out on the game from that and haven't checked it out yet. I've heard it's good though.

Max Payne 3. I loved the old games, but this new one doesn't seem to have the same feel as the first two. Which is a big reason why I loved them, the atmosphere. So, is it good?

Is Stronghold 3 any good yet?

I know it had a fairly disasterous launch and received a lot of negative reviews... but from what I understand, most of the criticism was due to bugs and silly gameplay flaws that could easily be fixed with patches. After a good 9 months or so for Firefly to improve the game via patches, is it worth getting, or is it broken and [censored] beyond all hope?

I've played the original Stronghold to death and it's one of my favourite RTS games - so don't just say "Stronghold 1 was much better, get that". I don't expect any amount of patching to make Stronghold 3 as good as the original. I'm just curious whether it's a half-decent RTS game yet.

I enjoyed every bit of Dawnguard immensely more than anything in the vanilla game. Especially the MQ.

oh yeah i totally played that game but i cant recall what the differences were from the first one. I think you were able to like control armies of dudes in the second one and tell them to attack things.
If i recall correctly, it was about on par with the first game. They tweaked some things though.
And i dont know if it would run on windows 7 or not, havent played it on a system with windows 7..

If you enjoyed the dark and gritty noir of Max Payne 1&2 then you will most likely enjoy Max Payne 3. Of course things have changed a little bit, Max is older and trying to move on (MP3's story captures the story of Max attempting to move on with his life) with the death of his wife and child. The action and gunplay is incredible and much better than the previous ones.

The narrative of Max is very original and he acts and thinks like you expect him too, sardonic with a taste of despair. The story isn't told through a comic like sideshow like the games before, it's live action. You should enjoy it.

Edit: in a few levels you get to play as Max in New Jersey (in the form of flashbacks), which are some of my favorite levels.

This explains my confusion from the trailers. In some scenes I see Max Payne bald and fat in South America, and in others he looks like Max from the old games. Thanks for the clear up! Might give this a try. By the way, I loved the comic like side show for the narrative of the old games.

Nothing close to the fun of the old Stronghold or Crusader. There's no skirmish, something that ALL real time strategy games have.

If you like excellent gameplay with solid controls and amazing narration you'll love Max Payne 3.

How is Sleeping Dogs? I loved everything about the first True Crime game and I know this is ( basically ) the third game.

Well i haven't played it yet, but it includes these mechanics:
"Previewers who had access to the game in February 2012 compared the games elements to several other critically acclaimed games, praising the parkour-style movement aspect of the game (similar to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin%27s_Creed series), the melee combat systems (similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Arkham_City), the slow-motion while shooting (similar to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Payne_(series) series),the vehicular combat (similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Cause_2), the mission structure (similar to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_(series) series),and the depth of the storyline."

Dragon's Dogma? Heard quite a bit of praise from this game, wondering whether it was worth my money. The dragons look way cooler than Skyrim's so that's justification alone I guess, but how is gameplay?

Some games that I've tried in the past year which I think are absolutely fantastic games are:

-Deus Ex: Human Revolution
-Battlefield 3
-RAGE
-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
-Company of Heroes: Modern Combat Mod

Games that I'm excited for:
-Torchlight II (right around the corner)
-Company of Heroes 2 (early 2013)
-Halo 4 (September)
-Black Ops 2 (I hated MW3, but this looks promising. September)
-Rome II: Total War (2013)
-Battlefield 4 (Late 2013/2014)
-MoH: Warfighter (2013)
-Crysis 3 (2013)

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Not necessarily from a genre I play, but if enough story is good and upgrading is semi-complex and detailed, I'm interested. Happened to see the real after ending credits in modern day and also knowing the emphasis on the loss of his wife and even talking to her ghost in an emotion scene after fighting Satan, its pretty brilliant and actually emotional in a melencholy way. Still with the hard and serious edge though...important npc voiced by Patrick Stewart warning of Satan's imminent return and how you and him are damned to be his puppets. Haha so you see i looked into it a little. Teetering on the edge of pulling the trigger on it
