Unofficial Minecraft Thread #69

East of FF, big ocean inbetween.
Is it that big? I thought the desert there looked kinda small.

There's also the problem of being very distant from spawn. A 2000 square trek every time you die is not fun.

I think the style is not quite as important as people's connection to the town and it's ideals. If they feel bored by the community, they start to move on somewhere else, laving us with huge abandoned towns again. I really think we'd need a new map if we're after building a proper new city.

No. Not another new map. Not again. Start over never does anything but delay the boredom. What we need to do is figure out something that'll keep people's attention, something interesting. For instance I've been keeping myself intertained by setting myself up on an island and only gathering rescourses from the island itself (Excpet for sand, which I go to a nearby desert to get), meaning that I stay on the island most of the time. It's kinda like a castaway situation, excpet that the castaway has decided to get to work on building a permenant residence.

Also, there's a desert south of the College, near my home.

Will we be installing the technic pack onto the server anytime soon?
Bah! Away, evil one! Thine technic pack of which you speak has never asked for nor recieved permission from the modders, and even endorced a 'fanart' piece that was quite derrogotory to Eloraam, maker of RedPower.

I get what you mean, but I just think a map cluttered with abandoned cities looks ridiculous, and is technically unfeasible without an unlimited myspawn. Having a communal project inevitably means towns to house them, then abandoned towns when they get bored. I think the rules need a big overhaul if we're looking towards a single city ideal again.

if we're going to stay on a single map with the ability to mass-migrate, we need a more flexible spawn system.

I know it's wrong. But it feels so good :P

Besides the problem isn't the idea it's that most of you have done everything in Vanilla Minecraft. Well for me anyway, there isn't a challenge anymore.

there is no need to change maps unless there is a technical reason. having abandoned cities is not a problem in the slightest.

i may be biast, but i like the idea of building cities, even if they would be mostly if not entirely empty. it would be like a community model project. And i think it would be awesome to build a huge empire, or even a few.

edit: @turns: that is what warps are for.

I'm also rather fond of wandering through cities to see what people have constructed. It matters not to me if they're derelict husks and a shadow of their former selves.

If we indicated empty buildings by signage (or lack thereof), it'd also be practical for new players on the server to have somewhere they could call home, immediately. Why settle for an apartment when there's a couple dozen abandoned houses available?

So if we're going to get a decent server host I'll be willing to pay £40 for the first month and £20 from then on. Unless of course you guys are still game for buying a server altogether? There I might be able to make a worthy contribution to it.

I like kaelins thalmor idea, and having lots of abandoned cities is good, imagine being new to the server and discovering the ruins of frostfall. It adds a sort of timeline to the server.

I meant that in a theoretical sense, in case it gets abandoned in favour of the big new city

We should make a complex underground metro system conncecting everything. With settlements at every station, Metro 2033 style, complete with pig and mushroom farms.

Then give an actual reason for abandoning them. Make them look abandoned. Give people a reason not to set foot there.

For very easy example: When abandoning a town remove all the torches. Nothing makes a place feel more like a ruin then a few dozen creepers in an unused apartment. :P

Could we just not abandon them? We'd still have the problem of distant spawn, and we'd still have a community divided by huge distances in multiple towns.

The spawn can be changed, you know.

Okay, I feel like a bit of nostalgia. Here are some pics of things some of you haven't seen and others may not remember:

Break out some windows and replace them with planks, maybe some doors too.

Also what about towns that use glowstone instead of torches, like New Frostfall, all torches have been removed and replaced with one of the street light designed showcased in the Ministry of Archetecture (Now Bridgeport Embassy)

Only if it'll make the building look more Soviet.

My windows looked out onto Ratwar's appartments, you can see zombies moving around inside sometimes. Once I stood on my roof sniping creepers with a bow.
