That's disappointing... I wonder if you can install from the disc, then disable internet access; duplicate the install folder, update as it demands, then disable updates, and swap out the game folders. Lot of work. :dry:

Nope. The install on the game disk is actually missing about 200 MB of files that you must get from steam. Looks to be intentional. So when you connect to steam to get those files, it grabs the updates as well.

So people are actually getting an intentionally crippled game when they buy the PC disk. What more evidence do we need that steam must die?

Pretty much, and for no reason at all really since its encrypted and requires steam to decrypt anyway. I was so pissed when I installed Skyrim and found it would require me to wait to whole extra day to download that to play it.
