to VATS or not to VATS?

Post » Wed Dec 15, 2010 7:47 pm

VATS didn't seem cheap or overpowered to me until I acquired the Grim Reaper's Sprint perk. This time around, I will avoid making my character too powerful, and I plan on using VATS often.

I probably wont use it. I didnt use it in Fallout 3 as it made the game extremely easy. Using VATS is like watching the AI play for you with god mode enabled. They should have severely reduced how fast AP fills up so you cant use it in every single encounter.

I'll just kinda... I'll use it, but I'll intentionally fight outside of VATS, and I will use iron sights quite a bit.

No VATS ever ever ever never. I tried it once in F3, and never again. I'd rather do the shooting myself, and I just really don't like slow-mo in my vidya games.

I love VATS. So, I will use it quite often. Some people think it makes things too easy, but I'm playing for me, not competing online. I will put myself up to a challenge later, after my first play.

I often fight during realtime, but I typically use it for grenade throws, shooting weapons/limbs, and stringing together first strikes on unaware opponents. You know, shooting a SM in the arm so he drops his minigun. Or slowing that yao gui/deathclaw/ghoul reaver the F down. Sure I can do that in real time, but them be some small targets.

The only reason I used it in fallout 3 was because it was impossible to hit an enemy from 25+ meters otherwise. Now that there are iron sights I will only use VATS to see how many enemies there are and their exact locations prior to blowing their brains out.

Where is the option for "sometimes yes, sometimes no"?

Hell no 3rd person and hardcoe out of the box exclusively. VATS makes kills feel so much less rewarding.

They made VATS wrong. They should have made it more old-school style, and no 90% damage reduction. Like if you enter VATS, place three shots in someones head, he doesn't die/you miss them all, then it's his turn, you watch him as he picks what bodyparts of you he's going to shoot and what the chance of him hitting them are. You can also access your inventory and change weapon/heal if you need to, or take a drug to increase your AP. AP would matter much more in this VATS. Crippling and shooting the weapon out of your enemy's hands would have more effect here aswell.

But as the person I am, with lack of self-discipline, I found myself using it quite often anyways :/

That's true, I've always said that every time you enter VATS it should give a random hostile enemy their own turn in VATS to attack you- it would have made VATS more balanced.

I use VATS pretty sparingly now, I don't see that changing any for New Vegas either.

Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing it dumped altogether. It was a fun little curiosity at first but quickly wore thin. IMO it all it does is make it too easy.

Eh, I use vats on and off. it varys, usuall I just use free aim.

Yes well now there are iron sights, so vats can be pushed further away, tho somtimes i will use VATS i will mainly use it to scout a location to see how many enemys are around.

said not planning too... but the truth is I use it as much as i dont, but there wasnt an adiquet option. but I find it weird that there always is a group of people who have problems with features that they can choose to use or not too but always complain its too tempting...

Hear hear! Well said well spoken! I have been playing FO since the beginning. This is not a FPS this is primarily a RPG. And my twitch reflex's are not what they used to be, so I love VATS.

Always use VATS. :gun:

(I plan to find the bound key for Ironsights and unbind it, or change it to "scroll lock" or something out of the way).

If the iron sights are great I plan not to use it.

But I will VATS my final kill for slow-motion goodness(I will have the replay camera off for regular combat) when I kill a boss or a big beastie.

Now that there's iron sights, I'm not going to use VATS as much as I did in FO3.

IMO, VATS should have been a "luck roll" thing right from the beginning, what I have in mind is that we would always fight in real time, but sometime suddenly the game would stop in situations where u can got a clean view of an opponent and that's when VATS would come in - give you a random chance to try to score a clean high dmg shot at certain body area of an opponent. Don't eat me, but really I thing this would be a great homeage to classic turn based fallouts and a nice balance thing, that appears unpredicted and makes you glad you had a luck roll to optain it in "that awesome clean shot situation, when I was surrounded by 8 mercs and I managed to take 3 of them right away with a rocket thanks to that, that VATS poped up luckly in that particular moment".

I ? the cinematic version. Not for knifing or punching though, it's kinda lame.

Knifing should't cut off your arms legs and head ok lol

In a Fallout 3 firefight, i usually damaged the hostile, and finished them with VATS.

But since they have that realtime VATS kill-cam in New Vegas, i might just do free aim all the way.

I can ignore all the VATS related perks this way as well.
