to VATS or not to VATS?

Post » Wed Dec 15, 2010 4:41 am

I found F3 to be way to easy even without using VATS...So I will probably try to live without it. Thoughts?

Depends, if there is a 90% DR then no.
If it's 60% or less I might try it.
But ultimately no.
Found it to be more of a gimmick and cheat device and made the game too easy.

I use VATS most of the time, but sometimes (melee, sniping, Etc.) I don't use it.

It depends on the situation, I find it much more satisfying to snipe someone myself than to use VATS.

In Fallout 3, I used VATS sometimes, it was nice to have in more difficult fights, it also seemed to be the easiest way to take good action screenshots due to the cinimatic camera, slow motion, and the fact that you temporarily don't comtrol your character directly. Sometimes, though, I just preferred manual aiming. It just depends on the situation and how I feel at the time, and I expect to do the same in New Vegas, though any changes to VATS might influence my choice, maybe I'll decide it's worthless in New Vegas and never use it for all I know, but I doubt it. Overall, like many options, it's something I don't always want to use but like to have access to when I want it.

Depends what weapon I'm using and what the target is, but I quite like the cinematic feel to an eye popping VATS kill.

With hard settings and hardcoe-mode enabled i think i would not survive a lot without using vats.
Also, i love vats and i cant wait for the awesome replay's to come!

Yep. It's there for me to use, so why not take advantage of that? It's the closest thing I can use that reminds me of Fallout's turn-based roots, as well. Plus there will be perks based solely around giving a boost to VATS attacks. It's what sets your character apart from the rest in combat - Max Payne had "bullet time", Fallout PCs have VATS.

Vegas has cinematic kills outside of vats mode now.

I used Vats mostly to target heads of protectrons and faces of mirelirks. Simpler to hold hown the trigger and empty a clip for everything else :flamethrower:

I will use it whenever I need it, as I did in FO3 - for things that I have I hard time aiming at freehand - fast moving things in point-blank range, or sniping targets that just won't stand still & have annoying paths.

Never used it for stuff like avoiding damage or shooting grenades out of the air.

I thought it was fun to use...especially later in the game when you could queue up headshots and take out several enemies at once. The DR was too much, though. If they toned that down a bit it'd be better.

Oh, and none of the poll options apply to me. :(

You havent even used it to shoot guns out of your foes hands? I found it really handy, especially when facing a super mutant overlord.. :disguise:

It depends on the situation.

A lot of people = VATS
One on one or smaller groups = No VATS

Of course VATS, as long as you don't make a crutch out of it.

I always used half and half, always switching between vats and non. The one thing i really disliked about FO3 (aside from the lack of vehicles) was that VATs ALWAYS did more damage, even when you were getting all head shots! thats something NV had better fix.

I didn't vote on this poll, none of the options suited my position. I'll use VATS, but not all the time, it'll be a healthy balance between VATS and iron sights.

I'll definitely use VATS a lot, as mentioned it was hilarious for shooting weapons out of enemy hands Western-style, and the cinematic cools are awesome.

They made VATS wrong. They should have made it more old-school style, and no 90% damage reduction. Like if you enter VATS, place three shots in someones head, he doesn't die/you miss them all, then it's his turn, you watch him as he picks what bodyparts of you he's going to shoot and what the chance of him hitting them are. You can also access your inventory and change weapon/heal if you need to, or take a drug to increase your AP. AP would matter much more in this VATS. Crippling and shooting the weapon out of your enemy's hands would have more effect here aswell.

But as the person I am, with lack of self-discipline, I found myself using it quite often anyways :/

I admit that it's hard to not use an almost godmode button 1 centimeter away.
But I've been working on my self-discipline and will most likely never press it unless I play an unarmed character.
